PANTHERS ON HOLD
Due to some health issues, I have, regrettably, taken a leave of absence, from producing Brusly HS Football games in 2018. We will explore every option of getting these games on the air this season
A special thank you to some very kind, special people who have been incredibly understanding, including Brusly Head Football coach Hoff Schooler, KBRS Owner Freddie Allen and many others. I apologize for this… Thanks to some great Brusly businesses who have supported what we are trying to do… We hope to be able to further elaborate in the next newsletter.

It is the middle of the summer so I figure it is time to check in on LSU baseball players playing summer league baseball.
Of course, Zack Hess, Antoine Duplantis, Daniel Cabrera, and Zach Watson were chosen to play for Team USA’s collegiate baseball team. Duplantis was injured in the first game. Hess has not given up a run or walk in his appearances which is great news. He pitched well in the Cape Cod league as well before joining Team USA.
Cabrera has been racking up RBIs while hitting around.260. Watson leads Team USA in hits and has played very well in the outfield as is the norm for him.
Returning players Hal Hughes and Brandt Broussard are hitting solid.286 and.289 averages respectively. Both players will be challenged to keep their starting roles next year. Hopefully Josh Smith will be back to full health and replace Hughes at shortstop. Still, it is nice to see Hughes hitting better than he did for LSU last season.
Broussard never quite regained his form after hurting his hand. One player who could challenge for playing time is incoming freshman Gavin Dugas who is having a great summer. Dugas is hitting.376 for his summer league team.
LSU will also be looking for better production from first base. Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year, Cade Beloso from John Curtis, will challenge for that role. This summer he is hitting.318 with 4 homeruns.
On the mound, LSU has a number of players taking the summer off to rest their arms. Trent Vietmeier has had mixed success. In 11 innings he has given up 13 hits and 5 runs which isn’t great. But he has 17 strikeouts and only 3 walks, which is excellent.
Matthew Beck who should provide great experience out of the bullpen next year has an interesting stat line. He has only surrendered 5 hits in 17 innings. More impressively, he has 29 strikeouts. But, he has 19 walks! Yikes.
The news is very good for LSU baseball next year. The best hitters, Cabrera, Watson, and Duplantis are returning. LSU has signed the most top 500 prospects that will attend college next year. Hess seems to be improving already. The pitching staff could be amazing if everyone gets healthy and to their top forms.
Maybe the best news LSU baseball has been receiving is the success of Alex Bregman and Aaron Nola. Both MLB All-Stars that are showing you can attend LSU and still make the majors quickly. Bregman especially is on fire. Of anyone in baseball, I am sure he is excited to make the All-Star game, but considering the streak he is on, he would be just as happy to skip the break.
HEY REF
Just when you think it’s safe to go back in the water up pops yet another episode of “You’ve got to be kidding me”. Remember now this is a family column with a “G” rating so I can’t say anything other than that about this
Earlier this year the NFL owners voted on and approved a new conduct rule on how their players were to behave during the pregame singing of the National Anthem, etc.
The new rule states all players, coaches, team attendants, etc. that are on the field (anywhere except the dressing rooms) will stand at attention during the “Pledge of Allegiance” and/or the “National Anthem” and conduct themselves as professionals. Most of the players in the NFL today are able to stand but acting as professionals will take a lot of training. The new rule allows those that don’t want to stand the option of staying in their dressing room until after the coin toss.
Most of us had hoped this was the last we’d hear or see these multi-millionaires acting like one of America’s enemies but we got too far ahead of ourselves. This week the NFLPA filed yet another grievance on this new directive from their bosses claiming the “change in pregame directives is inconsistent with the CBA between the league and its players”.
OH, REALLY? I’d like to ask the players where in the CBA it allows them to disrespect America, its citizens and all of the members of our armed services. There are some things that go without saying when you’re paid millions of dollars as a PROFESSIONAL, no matter what that profession may be. I constantly hear and read about arguments where someone claims “he disrespected me” right before shots ring out. I’m not sure who is behind this new grievance but it’s an issue the players can’t win.
Players are paid to play, that’s the extent of your employment. If your employer tells you how to act while at work and on “company” time you either do it or you don’t have a job anymore. Here’s how I’d handle this little issue, owners should suspend, WITHOUT PAY, all the players that don’t conform to the new rule. Make it mandatory that if a player is suspended for insubordination they won’t be allowed to resume their playing days until a full calendar year has passed. There’s just one thing that’ll get the players to abide by this new rule, NO PLAY, NO MONEY!
Very simple solution to a worker not abiding by the rules set forth by their employers. After all these guys do nothing but play a game. The product being put out in the marketplace isn’t something that’ll cause another “great depression”. I say it’s time for the NFL owners to take back their industry. I doubt that’ll happen since today’s owners are about as ruthless as are the members of OPEC.
They’ve become keen on holding a franchise hostage. They’ve all demanded that any city and/or state that want the NFL to make a pit stop must build them a multi-billion dollar stadium. Even with states spending billions on new stadiums and giving an owner a blank check there still is no guarantee that they won’t take a better offer in a year or two. Professional sports teams have become something prized to have. But the day is coming when stadiums will only be half full and tickets will be something you line the bottom of a bird cage with.
The way many of the NFL teams play we could see more entertainment on the sidelines and/or locker rooms as players and owners square off in a war nobody needs or wants to fight.
Till next week…
