THE WIZARDRY OF OS
(This column was written before the Saints-Jaguars pre-season game)
Are the Saints really going to be as bad as everyone thinks? I think it boils down to how we measure success this year for the Saints.
I doubt whether even the most optimistic Saints fans think this team will make the playoffs. But, as I think about this team and the roster, I wonder how we all would be thinking about the playoff chances for this team if the quarterback was Josh Allen or Joe Burrow. I know it is an impossible task, but let’s pretend Burrow was the QB for the Saints in 2025 and now let’s look at the roster.
Burrow’s top three out of four weapons are all coming off injury. Olave, Shaheed, and Hill are coming back from injury while Kamara is coming off a season where he showed he still has it when used wisely. The talent of these players isn’t in question. Reports from camp say that Shaheed and Olave look great. While we await Taysom’s return, Juwan Johnson is the exact type of tight end that Burrow has always turned into a star since his days at LSU.
Of course, the offensive line has four first round picks. While the Saints can be questioned for their talent evaluation, the commitment to develop the offense through the line has been there. Furthermore, we all know the offensive line can be made to look much better when the quarterback processes quickly and gets the ball out on time.
Maybe I am too hopeful, but I believe the biggest question is the rookie Kelvin Banks. Fuaga was great as a rookie and if the Saints hit the jackpot two years in a row, lookout. Penning showed last year that he can play in the NFL and he might prosper with a change of position to guard.
On defense, the Saints have struggled stopping the run in recent years. I think it has been more about the players than the scheme and Davon Godchaux could be the most valuable addition to this team if he can live up to his billing as a run stuffer.
There are players all over the roster, especially on defense who have flashed ability, but not been able to sustain their performance for one reason or another. As a result, they are not household names, but being a quality defensive team in the NFL is different than offense. On defense, you can be better than most teams if you stop the run, tackle well, and play together.
That being said, Bresee, Granderson, Young, Stutsman, McKinistry, Taylor, Blackmon, Davis and others are plenty talented enough to make up a solid defense.
If you put all of the above with Joe Burrow as the quarterback, you would think the Saints could make a playoff push considering the division. It would not be hard to imagine the Saints being in close games and the quarterback being the difference at the end of the game.
I have seen bad rosters for the Saints. This roster is not one of those. But, it is lacking at THE position. Joe Burrow is not the quarterback and it is hard to imagine Rattler or Shough taking care of the ball during the game and making plays in the last few minutes of the first and second half to win the game.
The reality is the Saints don’t have a quarterback like Joe Burrow at quarterback, and the goal of this year is to try and see if Rattler or Shough can be the next franchise quarterback of the Saints. If not, they will be drafting high enough to try again next year. If not, the Saints will have wasted two picks in the last two drafts. I am hoping at the end of the year we will be confident that we have the quarterback to lead this franchise for the next 10 years.
