PRESS RELEASE

THE DRU NETTLES SHOW

The Dru Nettles Show turns to the classroom, as a bi-monthly Academic Segment debuts on this week’s program (Cox 4, Thursdays, 6pm-7pm, with a replay on Fridays, 10:30am—11:30am. The Dru Nettles Show is co-hosted by DSHS athletic director/head football coach Dru Nettles and Jon Fine. It is a Jon Fine Production). Twice a month, a prominent DSHS student will appear on the program. The Dru Nettles Show thanks Principal Kelly Jones (the one principle/pal we abide by at DSHS) for his help in setting up these Academic Segment guests.

This week’s Academic Segment guest is Lauren Frazier. Lauren is both DSHS Anchor Club president and president of the Louisiana District (state president). The Anchor Club’s primary mission is to help those with brain-related disorders. Lauren will be discussing the November 12 Veterans Day program at Hornsby Gym.

Speaking of academicians, 4-time valedictorian Mike Dowty, Editor of The Livingston Parish News, will be coming on the program. Despite this unprecedented display of academic prowess, Mike was somehow left back three years in high school too, enabling him to accomplish this remarkable, yet ignominious feat.

Rummel High School Coach Jay Roth will appear on the program (via phone from New Orleans). The Raiders, ranked #1 in the state, will be facing the Jackets this Friday night at Yellow Jacket stadium.

The sponsor of the week is Marcy Linxwiler with Linx Physical Therapy.

Highlights of the DSHS-Catholic HS game will appear on the program.

LESS KANDI

Kandi Jones continues to make great strides in her weight-loss/body shaping via Ideal Protein at Moreau Physical Therapy/Spectrum Fitness in Central. The latest from Kandi Jones (host of KandiLand, Fridays, on THE CENTRAL STORY):

Onward… I am still going on with ideal but I can say that my journey seems to be complex. Crazy work scheduled and season changed are difficult to compete with. Throw a storm into my life and you can imagine that I may go into shut down mode. Ideal has implanted some important things into my diet. I have continued to strive to drink my water… and stay away from the foods that cause the drama in my body. Simple steps in this diet help to maintain when the going gets rough.

So here I hang… onto the wagon and know that with a few easy adjustments I will be back on track In no time. Thanks ideal… for being easy to understand and taking the full feeling of failure out of the equation.:)

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

“You can’t handle the truth!” A great line from a great movie for sure. But we forget the message from Jack Nicolson’s character said after that. He goes on to talk about the truth that nobody wants to admit. The problem is what his character sees as the truth isn’t really the truth. As is typically the case, the truth lies somewhere between.

Which brings me to the Saints 0-2 start. In an unprecedented season with unprecedented issues many are trying to figure the problem and who is to blame. What are the reasons for the struggles and the two losses? As I just said, the truth lies somewhere in the middle, and I’ll try to weight the factors.

The offensive line is struggling and Drew Brees has already taken more hits than most can remember in a season. Are the Saints missing Carl Nicks that much? Is it too much to have the offensive line coach as the interim head coach? Is it because the Saints don’t have enough balance on offense as they have been playing catch up too often? My guess is it is 25% Nicks, 25% Kromer as head coach, and 50% playing from behind and throwing 50 times.

The Saints haven’t had many explosive plays in the passing game. Do we miss Meachem that badly? Was Curtis Johnson that valuable as a receivers coach? Does Payton have the “it” factor in calling plays and devising a game plan that Carmichael does not have? Is it just that the Saints have been playing from behind? The first qualification to my answer is that the Saints miss Meachem, Henderson, Arrington, and Toon. So I’ll put that at 40% of the issue, Johnson at 10%, Payton’s game plan/ bravado at 25%, and the last 25% due to playing from behind.

The defense is getting abused. Are they playing on their heels because of the offensive schemes they have seen or learning a new system? Do they just lack talent and play makers on defense? This one is an easy 50/50 in my book.

The Saints are 0-2. Is it the NFL’s fault for making the Saints an example and not having their head coach, general manager, and linebacker coach? Is losing draft picks that big of a deal and the Saints are missing play makers as a result? How much of the problem is the fact that Drew Brees missed the off season? Did the Saints just happen to open with two of the up and coming teams in the NFL? Are the Saints pressing, trying to do too much because of all that has transpired? My guess is the two NFL factors are 40%. Brees missing the off season is 5%, while I give the Panthers and Redskins 25% of the credit (I know the Skins lost to the Rams, but they lost their 2 best pass rushers in the game). The rest of the 30% would be the Saints playing tight and trying to do too much.

So now we are back to where the Aaron Kromer post game press conference left off. What will it take for the Saints to right the ship? Do they need a larger commitment to running the ball, slowing down the opponents pass rush, and keeping our defense off the field? Is it simply a matter of winning the turnover margin? Is it a matter of the defense getting comfortable in a new scheme and eliminating the huge plays? Where is the truth? My guess is if the Saints do ANY of these three things they will get back to their winning ways.

In better news, Central hosts Catholic in a match-up of undefeated football teams at 3-0. Catholic had a very impressive victory over Denham last week.

Five years ago, Central played Catholic in a game where Central was trying to get the Catholic monkey of their back and prove they were for real. The Wildcats pulled that one out and have not lost to the Bears since.

This week the roles are reversed a little bit. Central has had Catholic’s number since that game, and Catholic has had some uncharacteristic season that has seen them miss the playoffs. The Bears have a lot to prove, and have their best team in years.

I am expecting a tremendous atmosphere with many game changing, exciting plays. It could should be an “instant classic.”

HEY REF

“These officials have been trained. We’ve been working with them. We think they’ll do a very credible job” --- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Are you serious Mr. Commissioner? Let me ask you this “If you stepped foot onto a 747 and you saw a 14 year old computer geek sitting in the cockpit would you buckle up expecting a smooth ride”?

If you answered “yes” stop reading, there’s no way of convincing you that the officials running up and down NFL sidelines are just as good as the ones that the NFL owners LOCKEDOUT some six months ago. Fact number one, this was a calculated atrocity perpetuated by money grubbing spoiled little rich kids.

Just like the circus the owners tried to pass off as being the equivalent of professional players when replacement players were brought in to break the player’s union so too is this sham of having guys that aren’t even the top officials in the big conferences blowing whistles and dropping flags. But that’s what we have now on Sunday afternoons from sea to shining sea.

These owners want to win at any cost. They took it on the chin when the players stood strong, together and united. So they decided the refs were going to pay for that loss. But somewhere along the way they decided anybody can officiate these games. Don’t worry in a week or two the officials will cave in and we’ll finally be able to boast “we won one”.

For those who are wondering where these refs came from let me educate on the selection process. The big conferences (SEC, PAC12, ACC and so on) told the NFL owners to stay away from their officials. So what was decided they’d go after those officials in Div. 3, retired referees that could train a crew and pray the NFL boys would see they were serious about using replacements and thus the unionized refs would be eating of their hands.

Well, it ain’t happening. In fact it’s backfired on ‘em. What we’re seeing is those locked out officials ARE THE BEST in what they do. At a few referee camps I was fortunate to meet some of the top officials in the NFL. If you think working for the CIA is tough, you need to know what goes on during the season. Once a crew is assigned their game they’ll fly to that city on a Wednesday (Sunday game). For each official at least one usually two NFL “spies” shadow his every move.

“Red” said the NFL knows when you got up, when you left your house, what flight you were on, what seat you sat in, who you had lunch and dinner with, what time you arrived at the hotel, what cab picked you up, etc., etc., etc. He also told me the reason most of the NFL officials make six figure incomes at their regular job is the hope you’ll be untouchable. By that he meant from bookies, bribes and so on. So when the NFL owners cry about the salaries refs are already making in their 9 – 5 jobs remember the owners/league want people that won’t succumb to bribes!

And yes, the refs ARE PART TIME EMPLOYEES. They don’t get hospitalization insurance, no dental plans and so on. The average starting salary for an NFL official is in the $75,000 range where a MLB ump is almost $145,000 or more, NBA refs $128,000 NHL $139,000. Some say “Well that’s because they only work one day out of the week”. Sure, they’re on the field one day but the other four to five days they’re in meetings dealing with rules, film rooms, traveling to and fro their homes, etc.

But the big thing the locked out refs have over these replacements is THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO WORK FOOTBALL GAMES OF THIS MAGNITUDE. That’s what we should all learn from this misadventure of replacement refs, they aren’t qualified to do the job. That’s not an opinion, its cold hard FACT!!!

Till next week…
