$50 TRIVIA QUESTION

Last week, we eclipsed the 2,000 circulation mark for JonFineProductions.com. To commemorate this occasion, we asked a very difficult, perhaps unfair trivia question—the winner to receive a $25 gift certificate. The question posed:

He was the number 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. He was selected by the Patriots, yet never played a down for them. Can you name him?

Good guesses, albeit incorrect ones, came from Doug in Baton Rouge (Jim Plunkett) and Chris in Central (Ernie Davis).

So now we double the stakes.

We’ll give you until Sunday, Midnight, CST, to e-mail your guesses. Anyone with the correct answer will have his/her name put into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice in the greater Baton Rouge area—must be a present Jon Fine Productions sponsor. We’ll announce the winner in next week’s newsletter. Winner must be one of the 2,030 people who subscribe to JonFineProductions.com Newsletter.

Doug and Chris, you’re eligible again… although you’re advised not to guess Plunkett or Davis!

Former SportsGumbo co-host Tommy Krysan is still ineligible.

DENHAM SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

Class of 2013

The Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame has announced the names of six former athletes and one coach who will be inducted into the Class of 2013 on August 16 at Forrest Grove Plantation in Denham Springs. This is the third group to be honored, with a total of 29 members having been inducted in the first two classes. Tickets are on sale for the dinner banquet for $50 each at the school office on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Joey Chustz, an All State football player in 1994 and later an All American lineman at Louisiana Tech, was the first athlete in school history to be drafted by the NFL and play professional football (Jacksonville Jaguars). Similarly, Australian exchange student Katrina Hibbert was the first DSHS athlete to be drafted by the WNBA and play women’s professional basketball (Seattle Storm), after leading the Lady Jackets to the state title in 1996 and earning first team All SEC honors three times at LSU.

Celeste Gully Callender was a prolific scorer and two-time All State girls basketball player in 1958 and 1959. George Meadors made All District at three positions and was a unanimous All State football player in 1967, while Michael Sceroler was an All State defensive back in football and a star second baseman on the DSHS state title baseball team in 1986. Shannon Roubique was a 1990 All State lineman who would later become a four-year starting center at Auburn, with three first team All SEC selections.

The only coach in the Class of 2013 was herself an All State basketball player for DSHS in 1964, who later coached her alma mater to two state championships in softball. Nikki Dixon Leader had a remarkable record of 211-75 in softball and 392-167 as girls basketball coach.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Finally, I have found something interesting from all the Media Days, "car washes", and pre fall practice interviews regarding LSU.

No, it is not from Coach Miles. Though, I think he was excellent this week making the rounds with the media, and I have a theory. He is more comfortable with the media when his team is an underdog.

Instead, my interest came from a Cam Cameron comment, but first I need to set it up. Coach Miles comments on the LSU offense have been typically ambiguous. He has said he expects LSU to get back to having balance and people will enjoy LSU's passing game. As for the players, they have been coached up well to say there aren't many significant changes.

Then Coach Cameron said on the radio that LSU is going to be a vertical passing team and they will throw down field at every opportunity. That is specific and contrary to what we have heard in the past.

Is this a real change? Is Coach Miles aware of this plan? Will this be a source of in game contention between the two like we have heard in the past between Coach Miles and other coordinators? Is this a tactic to mislead opponents to try to keep them from putting 9,10, or 11 defenders within 10 yards of the ball?

My guess is the offense under Cameron will always have someone threatening different levels of the defense, especially down field. As to where the ball is actually thrown, I expect LSU to be smart and choose efficiency over bravado. Nevertheless, the offense should be more effective by just making the defense cover down field. If the Tigers are at all good at it, then the offense will improve tremendously. If the idea of vertical includes all aspects of the field with timing, LSU will win more than the standard nine game prediction we are hearing from most national experts.

That is a lot of "ifs." But the biggest "if" is if Cameron is being open about LSU's real plan. I have been taking the wait to see approach until now. Maybe it is the heat of the summer or the excitement for the start of the year, but I believe Cameron now.

Which brings me back to my theory. Miles believes the offense is going to be better than the last few years and that means his team will be better than anticipated.

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie,

Veteran Louisiana High School Official

I hope everyone is having a great summer. I agree it’s a bit too hot to be thinking of anything except watermelon and swimming but for all of us involved in the coaching and/or officiating of football games it’s time to start concentrating on THE important thing that makes life in south Louisiana worth living. With all the rockets and Roman candles lighting up the midnight sky on July fourth it isn’t the only thing worth celebrating! No, it may be the end of summer to some but to many of us we’re getting excited about the start of a new football season.

What? Are you kidding me? The start of a new football season? Well, yes, I can guarantee you that all good football officials have been hitting their rule books hard and often. Quarterbacks can use the excuse that their timing is off just a little bit because it’s early. Running backs will be allowed a few games to get into mid-season form. But there isn’t a coach alive that’ll give officials the benefit of the doubt when we start lining ‘em up and start playing even scrimmages let alone the start of the season.

Defenses usually dominate at the start of the season while the skilled players work off the rust due to the long layoff. I could go on but I’d rather just cut to the chase. Officials can never use an excuse for not being in top form no matter their experience. For them there is never rust to work off or timing to get right.

No, for all officials there is nowhere to be but on top of your game the first down of intersquad play all the way to the final down of the final game. I’m not complaining or trying to make an issue where there isn’t one. Just the opposite, I demand my officials to walk out onto the field for the first scrimmages as though they were about to work the Super Bowl.

Imagine would you for just a second what reaction you’d get from the coaches when you miss a call then try and blame it on the season just beginning! You’d never work for that coach and/or school ever again. And that’s the way it should be and has to be. In fact I use March Madness and the end of basketball season as my reminder it’s time to crack open the rulebook and to be well aware of all the changes we’ll be calling in the new season.

The first thing you do before pouring a cup of coffee is refresh your memory from the previous season’s changes. Many times a change only lasted one season. What looked good on paper turned out to be just the opposite and the rule reverted back to where it was just two years ago.

The high school game is just about as perfect, rule wise, as any game can get. So many times the changes are actually just editorial tune-ups. That’s about what we have again this year. One tune up is a change where a player must sit out one play if his helmet comes off without any contact from an opponent. The Federation is just trying to keep players from removing their helmets in an attempt to look cool.

Another “change” allows corporate advertising on the field of play. Previously all advertising was only allowed in the end zones or outside the field. And we needn’t print that all advertising can’t obstruct any lines/markings on the field of play.

I touched on two changes the past couple weeks and I need to further explain the NEW catch interference penalty I mentioned last week. In 2013 when kick catch interference is called a 15 yard penalty has been added to an awarded fair catch. The two options in high school this year allows the offended team to accept the ball at the spot of the interference (and the free kick option to score remains) with a 15 yard walk off OR THEY CAN HAVE THE KICKING TEAM PENALIZED 15 YARDS FROM THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND RE-KICK! This is a major change; it allows coaches to do some quick thinking about the spot AFTER administrating the penalty.

Another change is the ruling on catches close to the sideline. Last year an airborne receiver could be carried to a sideline and dumped out of bounds causing the pass to be incomplete. In 2013 the receiver after securing the catch will be awarded a catch at his foremost progression if knocked out of bounds BY A DEFENDER. If he goes out on his own; we still have a non-completion.

July 29 is the last day to register to work high school football this year. You can contact John Langlois, Baton Rouge Assignment Secretary at 225-663-3105 or email him at:John. Langlois@sunbeltsupply.com for all the information you’ll need. I was hoping we’d get a few of those experts I hear every game yelling “Hey Ref, you need to learn the rules” to MAN-UP and step onto a field wearing the stripes. Just once I’d love to sit them down AFTER calling a couple games to see if they still think it’s an easy thing we do when we blow our whistles and throw our flags. Just once… …

Till next week… …
