STATE PLAYOFFS ON RADIO AND INTERNET

SportsRadio-1310-KEZM-Lake Charles (and on line at KEZMOnLine.com) will carry all Barbe HS and Sulphur HS games from the State Baseball Playoffs. This Friday, Sulphur HS vs Catholic HS will air at 9:45am. This game will be followed by Barbe HS vs West Monroe HS, which is scheduled for a 12:45pm airtime. Bruce Merchant calls the play-by-play.

FIRST CLASS EVENT

We were privileged to sponsor a Denham Springs Rotary Club booth at the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce Business & Community Expo. What a terrific event, executed seamlessly by The Chamber. Congrats to Chamber Executive Director April Wehrs, her staff and several Chamber volunteers. There were 120 booths

2016 US President Ivy Graham, Heather Vice-Pitarro and Secretary of State Lisa Casas did a great job with the DS Rotary Club booth. No blondes in this Cabinet… It was a pleasure meeting and visiting with a number of area businesspeople… many of whom now receive this propaganda!

LEADER OF MEN

The Central Chamber President Wayne Leader, former President Tim Lazaroe, Central Mayor’s better-half Loretta Watts, THE CENTRAL STORY radio superstar Matt Price and many others head up a wonderful event, “Cooking For The Kids”

Hope you’ll have the opportunity to be able to participate in this ultra-worth cause, one we’ve been talking about, extensively, on THE CENTRAL STORY

Loretta’s t-shirts for Cooking are beautified by Jon Fine Productions logo.--Even Mayor Mac Watts would look good in one of them!

Dear Jon:

I have been reading (Dennis Dearie’s column, HEY REF) for a number of years. He does not seem like a fun guy with whom to party and seems to be right of the John Birch Society.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Either I am too understanding, or there is something that I am not understanding. But I don't understand why Russell Shepard is being made out to be a fool regarding his signing with the Eagles.

For those who don't know what I am talking about, Shepard said he signed with the Eagles before the draft ended which would be against the rules. So here are my questions to you:

What percent of people who watch NFL games know that rule?

What percent of college football players know that rule?

What percent of NFL teams know that rule?

I don't know the answer to the first two questions. Nevertheless, I guarantee the percentage of the first two is less than the third, AND the answer to third question better be 100%.

My point is simple. The Eagles know the rule and wouldn't officially sign Shepard before the draft ended. It was a case of semantics and Shepard not articulating the fact that they had agreed to terms versus him actually signing a contract.

But what if the rule had been broken? I am confused as to why Shepard would be looked upon as the fool. Considering the Eagles are the professional organization, wouldn't they be the fools for breaking a rule like this to sign an undrafted free agent that obviously wanted to sign with them all along because of Chip Kelly?

As I said in the beginning, maybe I am looking at this wrong. All I know is I am looking at the situation differently than the story has been told and portrayed locally.

HEY REF

“Round ‘N round she goes; where she stops nobody knows”. You can hear that twice a day as they spin the big wheel on the TV show “The Price is Right”. Another is when all the chips are laid down on the roulette tables as gamblers hope they’ve backed the right number and/or color.

But I also feel it describes the game plan used by many NFL organizations in the latest saga we so affectionately call THE DRAFT. Draft day(s) 2013 was one of the oddest in the history of the two merged leagues. What made this year’s draft stick out, whether for better or worse was the perceived lack of so called “skilled” players. You know the “money guys”, the “go to” players that can turn a game around by them producing in a single play. A player that can turn the tide of battle is a must on both sides of the ball.

But I must tell all those that’ll listen; I feel we aren’t giving the proper credit to the real skilled positions. If I was the man in charge of writing checks you can be assured my top priority is lineman. No matter they be on offense or defense, give me a good, solid line with mediocre ball carriers and success will be attained. Simply put running and catching is something that comes natural almost like a second sense so to speak.

But to line up in front on the line of scrimmage and then to be able to pull completely across to the opposite side of the field and then lead the play in my books is my definition of a truly SKILLED player. But something about this draft really has been bothering me to no end.

I’m not able to put my finger quite on it for now but maybe the owners are trying to keep from opening up their wallets and then decided amongst themselves to “shop cheap” this year. But no, that can’t be it because that would insinuate collusion on their part and we all know the owners have never resulted to collusion in their fight to keep most of the “pie” to themselves.

This week though I want to concentrate on a story that should stay on the front page of all the newspapers in Louisiana. That story of course is the extraordinary opportunity handed to Tyrann Mathieu when the Arizona Cardinals chose him in the third round, the 69th overall player taken. I haven’t been an NFL fan for quiet some now. In fact I lost all respect for the league when the owner’s group allowed Jerry Jones to screw Tom Landry after he purchased the team.

I’m hoping as should every fan of the NFL and fans of life in general that Tyrann get his (stuff) together and layoff the green leafy stuff for the next 100 years. There’s no disputing that he possess great natural ability to play at the highest level but to throw it all away would be a travesty to not only himself but his entire extended family at home and at LSU.

The Tiger football program has had its share of “black eyes” so if Tyrann is able to shake the wants to get “high” then he perhaps one day could be compared to other great LSU players. He’s got the talent, he’s got the brains, he’s got the support and the natural, God given ability and I’m praying that he succeed and become an inspiration to the many young kids out there that may be struggling with their own demons.

Till next week… …
