THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Whew. After LSU’s win over Mississippi State, it looks like LSU will make the NCAA Tournament. It is difficult to ignore LSU’s pitching stats away from Alex Box and therefore hard to imagine a magical run in either tournament. But, at least it looks like we will have baseball beyond this week.

Regardless, this is the week I need to discuss Joe Burrow. I really do get tired of the impression that the only two reactions to news are that everything is great or everything is terrible. It makes it easy to see that reality is somewhere in the middle, though.

When the news broke that Burrow would sign with LSU, most of the reaction was that LSU is now a 10 win team next year instead of being a 6 win team. The natural reaction to that reaction is for people to say, “Wait a minute, wait a minute, this guy hasn’t done anything. He might stink, LSU might still stink, and worse, LSU might lose all the quarterbacks they have.”

I think there are some safe, realistic conclusions we can make between those points of view.

First of all, if you are a coach and you have a chance to add a talented player to your team, you do it. PERIOD. The only exception would be a character issue which does not exist here (see Johnny Manziel). The more talent, the better. Look at the team Burrow is leaving. Ohio State last won a national championship with three quarterbacks that are better than any LSU quarterback LSU has had in 8 years, save Mettenberger, and they needed all of them.

Second, talent doesn’t guarantee anything. Talented players get hurt and in football are extremely dependent on the players around them. Jake Fromm led Georgia to within 15 seconds of a championship and many Bulldog fans are wondering if he will be their starting quarterback next year. Yet, experts (and I) still have plenty of faith that Georgia will be an excellent team this year. Mostly, because Georgia has options and will be choosing a quarterback who “wins” the job instead of the player that didn’t “lose” the job.

That is the benefit of signing Joe Burrow. After spring, Coach Orgeron (who attended all the practice and the Spring Game) did not feel any of the quarterbacks won the job. He made a point to mention that players two quarterbacks is a viable option.

I don’t know which or if any of the options will lead to production at quarterback at LSU next year. I DO know that the best way to increase your odds of success is to have as many options as possible. LSU baseball has survived this year because Austin Bain gave LSU another option on the infield and the middle of the lineup. The more options, the better chance of success.

LSU might lose one of their options this summer if a quarterback decides to transfer. But, LSU will have gained an option they didn’t have before which is a positive. College athletics is about competition and LSU has more internal competition at quarterback. LSU fans, this one included, should be cautiously optimistic as a result.
