Should we be happy the Saints are a game away from securing home field throughout the playoffs? Or should we be concerned that the Saints are going to blow it because the offense hasn’t produced the last three weeks?
To start, I would hope all Saints fans are not so greedy as to not fully appreciate the type of season this team has put together. 13-3 has happened twice in Saints history (both since 2011), and the Saints have never finished 14-2.
Of course, what true fan(atic) would we be without fearing impending doom? The Eagles are rekindling their magic with Nick Foles, the Bears defense is ‘85 Bears reborn, the Cowboys unlocked the key to beating the Saints, the Seahawks are the Saints kryptonite, the Vikings remembered they were really god, and can the Saints really beat the Rams twice in one year? The running game is gone, Brees can’t throw downfield, the receivers can’t get separation, and who really believes the defense can keep this up? Does that adequately cover the paranoia?
Let’s start with the offense and take a page from Aaron Rodgers since the Packers won’t be playing in January and their fans won’t need this advice… R-E-L-A-X. Brees is throwing the ball just fine. The running game has actually been OK, especially when needed to put games away the last two weeks.
Sure the offense needs to be more productive and there is every reason to think that will happen. Every team hits a rough patch, and this team won two out of three on the road during their rough patch. The defense started slow and figured it out. The offense was amazing all year, until recently. Keep in mind, the Saints needed a fake punt and many fourth down conversions against the Ravens and Giants to get going so it’s not like they were perfect all year.
The Domefield advantage is back and could be what the doctor ordered for the offense. More importantly, though, I think the offense just needs a healthy offensive line. Sure, it would be nice to get Ginn back in the lineup. But, the offense was just fine until Armstead was hurt. Get him back, get the games back at home, and let’s roll.
Having said all that, I suspect I will start to worry if the Saints aren’t more lively on offense this week. So stay tuned.
I know LSU basketball is on and off the radar right now, but LSU could take a lot of pressure of themselves in conference with a win against Furman this Friday. I usually agree with most everything Will Wade says and does. He is quick to assess his team and make adjustments.
There was a great deal of attention given to bringing Waters off the bench, and that worked. At the same time, Waters was off the ball more in offense. As a result, he could move back into a scoring role. Mays and Smart are plenty capable of initiating offense. Waters is the best at creating scoring opportunities and it was nice to see him do that efficiently for the first time this year. It is really tough for the point guard to get everyone involved and get the ball back to score. This way he isn’t responsible for both all the time.
If I can be greedy, I now wish LSU would look for a few more ways to be disruptive on defense and find some easy scoring opportunities in transition. I certainly appreciate trying to limit the turnovers and bad shots that occured when LSU lost to Florida State and Oklahoma State. Hopefully, LSU can find a balance between the offense in those games and the stress that is being placed on LSU’s half court offense currently. I have a feeling an experienced team like Furman will be tough to “out execute” in a close game. Hopefully, LSU can have a great energy, enthusiasm and offensive pace at home.
