THE WIZARDRY OF OS
I really should write something positive about the Pelicans. For once, they sort of deserve it.
They have won 5 of 6, and likely 6 of 7 should they beat Orlando between my typing and your reading of this article.
After an atrocious start to the year and playing the whole year without Zion (who is supposed to be their best player) the Pels are in 10th place. Making the play-in game would be quite an accomplishment this year.
The trade for CJ McCollum looks like one of the best of the David Griffin era. He is a true professional who can score without plays being run for him and can get easy shots for his teammates. Drawing tons of attention and making scoring easier for teammates was what Zion was supposed to bring to the team. Without him, everyone has had to play offense just a notch outside of their comfort level as Ingram is a good player, but he scores over the defense more than he is able to break down the defense.
While the Pelicans cannot seem to find impact players in the first round, they have likely found a gem in Herb Jones. Having just said that, it may not be a positive to point out that the Pelicans are in line to get a draft pick from the Lakers if Los Angeles does not get their act together. Though they likely would not draft an impact player, the thought of having the option of a pick in the top half of round one is nice.
But, I am NOT going to point out any of those positive aspects because I know what will happen as soon as I do. The injuries will pile up again. In fact, I actually started writing this on Monday night and Ingram woke up injured Tuesday morning.
It will get even worse if I say positive things. Losses to lesser teams will certainly occur. Losing to Orlando Wednesday night would fit the bill.
Meanwhile, the Lakers, who have been bad all year, will go on a 12 game winning streak. All of this is destiny as soon as I write anything positive about the Pelicans.
So forget all I said about things looking up. The Pelicans are the Saints from 1967 to 1986. A doomed franchise prior to the arrival of Jim Finks. Is Willie Green the Pelicans Sean Payton? No, of course not. That would be positive thinking about the Pelicans and we know what happens when I do that.
