GOD BLESS UKRAINE AND THE USA!!!!
GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH (AND A JACKETS VICTORY WE HOPE!)
With all due respect to Patrick Henry (not the former LSU Track coach) as we amend his famous quote… Coach Brett Beard’s Denham Springs Yellow Jackets, at 2-0, go on the road to face Liberty High School tonight (Friday night). Sport N Center Yellow Jackets Warmup comes your way at 6:00 pm this evening. Josh Ward and Mitch Covington are on the call. I’ll be contributing to pre-game, half-time and post-game. Tune in to Family Radio, 91.9 FM, Baton Rouge or on the net at JonFineProductions.com
It has been confirmed that Jackets quarterback Reese Mooney will be suited up for Denham Springs. We (Jon Fine) asked coach Beard which team Reese would be playing for, since he had committed to Liberty. Coach Beard said it would be Denham Springs HS, explaining that it was Liberty University in Virginia Reese had committed to, not Liberty High School. We knew that, but thought we’d get a chuckle out of coach Beard. Mission accomplished.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS
College football might be the only team sport in the world with an offense that competes against a defense and does not allow the teams to scrimmage or play an exhibition game before starting the regular season.
College football teams practice against each other all spring and fall, and then the first time against an opponent is a game that counts. The last two seasons, we have seen UCLA and Florida State definitely gain an advantage by scheduling a “warm-up” game in week 0 before taking on LSU.
One of the biggest anxieties for coaches is wondering what aspect of the game was not covered well enough in preparation for the opener. Notice I said which aspect, and not if an aspect has not been covered well enough. Whether it is choosing who to play/start or preparing for situations, it is impossible to cover it all in preseason. It is also impossible to know how the team will handle the realities of performance anxiety until the night of the first performance.
College baseball allows games in the fall while MLB takes a month to play spring training games. College basketball and NBA teams play exhibition games. The NFL has preseason. High school volleyball, basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and softball all have scrimmages and jamborees.
College football, on the other hand, throws true freshmen, transfers, and first time starters together under the bright lights without any heads up for who will shine and who will falter.
Even with multiple practices against an opponent and exhibition games, the NFL showed in week one that their preparation is not enough to be truly ready for an opener either.
The Broncos were not ready for their end of the game situation. The Saints did some great things at the end of the game, and some other things that made me pull my hair out. Thankfully, the Falcons did their thing in the fourth quarter to help.
Fortunately, teams continue to practice and they get better as the players learn the systems and the coaches learn their teams.
For years, Charles Turner has been the center that the coaches will do anything they can to have second on the depth chart. Many offensive lineman that are suited for other positions on the line have been tried at center to prevent playing Turner.
The Southern game is a tough game to form a real evaluation, but Turner looks ready and fits the spot better than anyone else. While he might struggle from time to time, the offensive line looks much better with Dellinger at guard and Frazier at tackle.
There is reason to be optimistic about LSU’s offense if the line is solidified. We know the playmakers at receiver, that Daniels is a quality quarterback, and Emery finally returns. I have no idea how good Emery will be this year. Worst case scenario, he is another solid running back with Cain, Williams, and Goodwin. Best case scenario, he makes plays in space while running with power. He looks like an All-SEC running back that brings balance to the offense without having to use Daniels. This development allows Cain and Goodwin to be excellent spot players. The smart money would be that he ends up somewhere in the middle.
Defensively, we know that it takes a dominant defensive line to be a top defense in the SEC. I don’t see anyone in the middle that draws the attention necessary. The worst part in losing Maason Smith is that I am sure much of the defense was centered around the attention he would garner.
Hopefully, LSU’s defensive coaches have had enough time to find a plan B. The defense can still be solid. I just don’t think it can be as good as Tiger fans had hoped going into the year.
As Coach Kelly has said all week, playing against Mississippi State is all about making plays in space. Last year, Damone Clark did that and LSU built a lead. By the time Mississippi State figured it out, LSU had enough of a lead to hang on for the win. I have the feeling that this year, the offense for LSU will have to score early and keep scoring for LSU to pull this one out.
DENHAM SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL IS BACK ON THE AIR!

When the Jackets have secured a victory, Ward will indicate that the victory is in the bank, brought to you by Bank Plus.
Sport-N-Center owner Stacy Phipps (Baseball) and Big Mike O’Neal (Football) were athletes at Denham Springs HS. Ralph Sellers Chevrolet Parts Manager Jim McChristian, a former Jackets color commentator, says he was an athlete at Denham Springs HS, but we have had a difficult time verifying this claim! lol
Fine expressed that he is especially appreciative of the loyal commercial and name mention sponsors the broadcasts have had on Jon Fine Sports Productions’ Denham Springs HS play-by-play broadcasts throughout the years. Many have been with the broadcasts on a year-in, year-out basis. Fine expressed hope that listeners will have the opportunity to patronize these businesses and let them know they heard about them on DSHS Football radio broadcasts.
