THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Before I start, I want to be clear. This article is has nothing to do with Les Miles, the job he has done at LSU or the job he will do in the future. The purpose of this article is to make the point, once and for all, that LSU is an elite college football program and Tiger fans should feel comfortable thinking of the program in that light.

We have no issues with thinking LSU baseball is an elite program after what Skip Bertman built. Yet, there is a hesitation or a guilt among Tiger fans to see football in that light. The following are reasons why you can allow yourself to have the highest of expectations for LSU football, just as you do in baseball.

An elite program attracts coaches and players even when it doesn’t make perfect sense. Everyone is aware of all the controversy from late November, and many in the national media speculating about the demise of the LSU football program. How would Les Miles be able to keep a staff together, much less hire quality coaches? Well, Dave Aranda has been hired as LSU’s defensive coordinator, and the consensus seems to be that it is a “home run” hire. The situation is not perfect. Aranda’s job was more secure at Wisconsin. But, LSU is an elite program and could triple his salary, so he is now a Tiger.

An elite program expects championships. That wasn’t true at LSU before 2003. LSU’s last 3 years would have been fine in the 1990s, but not anymore, and that is a good thing. It doesn’t mean LSU fans have to be pompous butt holes about it. It doesn’t mean the athletic administration, board of supervisors, and president of LSU systems shouldn’t do a better job of being on the same page in representing LSU. Nevertheless, it does mean that when LSU loses three straight games by double digits in November that the powers that are correct to be restless.

An elite program sustains success. Florida, Ohio State, Florida State, Alabama, and others have the resources to counteract natural dips in success. Those resources are money, fan support, talent, and exposure. LSU is the state university without peer in one of the most talent rich states in the country, and is next door to Texas. LSU has the finances and fan support to “keep up in the arms race” for facilities, coaching salaries, and budget.

For all these reasons and more, anyone who was writing LSU off in November and December were not of sound mind. Those who claimed that Alleva and King had ruined LSU football and that Coach Miles would never be able to overcome the damage done in late November don’t understand the level of program LSU has at this time.

Elite programs make mistakes. Some seasons or coaching hires won’t work out. Nevertheless, the program is bigger than any player, coach, or athletic director. The only thing that brings down an elite program as well positioned as LSU is when the resources dry up or desire to be elite evaporates.

Let’s be clear, though. None of what I have written allows you to think every year that does not end in a national championship is a bust (we are not Alabama). Nevertheless, LSU should spend more years competing for SEC and national championships then not. Which is what an elite program should expect.

HEY REF

Want tickets? Show me ‘da money! That’s exactly what is going on IF you want to buy season tickets for the newer Los Angeles Rams. To get on the “list” first thing you must do is pluck down $100.00 and get on the list for the season tickets. Magic Johnson has been reported to be the first to get on the list at least that’s what the club is claiming.

So for all those that may have questions to the process let me try to ease your mind and provide a few answers; the $100 dollar deposit is refundable once you buy the tickets. The new stadium in Inglewood won’t be ready until the 2019 season at a reported $1.8 BILLION dollars. This deposit and waiting list is only for games played in the new stadium but will give you priority over the general public when tickets go on sale for the LA Coliseum.

You won’t be forced to buy season tickets in the Coliseum and you’ll stay on the list until the club starts selling season tickets for the new Inglewood venue. Presently once your name gets on the list and you’ve got an active account then and only then will you be able to purchase season tickets. Each account can purchase only eight tickets. But you can discuss the opportunity to buy more tickets when sales are opened for the new stadium.

If you hurry and send in your one hundred dollar “fee” you’ll be placed in the “front” of the line. No cost has been confirmed for the 2016 season but if you’re on the list you’ll receive ticket information before the general public. Presently parking isn’t part of buying season tickets, details surrounding parking and other so called amenities are still being finalized.

I know you’re wondering if the new stadium will have a “PSL PROGRAM”, right. Well the franchise has come out and said it’s too early and hasn’t been determined as of press time. But they do anticipate the majority if not all seats will require a “PERSONAL SEAT LICENSE”. And of course depending on location and those dreaded amenities in your area of the stadium will factor in the final cost per seat. To Tiger fans it’s like being forced to “donate” a few hundred bucks to the athletic department for the prestige of being an owner of season tickets. The amenities in plain English are a bathroom, concession stand, elevator and/or T-shirt stand and the like and yes if your seats are in close proximity then your cost will be higher.

And the team admits that those fans buying season tickets in the Coliseum automatically will be given first shot on seats and locations in the new stadium (as if we needed to be told that). But if you don’t want to be a season ticket now then you’ll have to take your chances on what seats will be made available in the spring of 2019. And without hesitation the Rams have said you’ll be dropped to the bottom of the list for tickets in the Inglewood stadium (again, as if we needed to be told that). Plain English “Money talks, Bullsh*t walks”.

This is what’s going on now in the NFL and it’s no surprise. These new style owners demand that if you want to continue to be a host city to one of their teams then you must provide them with one of these multi-billion dollar stadiums. And they’ll continue to move franchises around until each one of them have a new billion dollar place to play. I won’t waste any more time or take up any more space trying to figure out these modern day outlaws.

California has been under a massive drought for more than a decade now. They still haven’t figured out a way to get good, clean water to its citizens and farmers. But they won’t hesitate to fork over billions of dollars to have a professional football team. The last I heard California was more than $100 billion in debt, unable to pay its day to day expenses. To me it’s a travesty when an industry that can only guarantee 16 days of revenue to be put first, above everything and everyone else. It’s sad but as long as cities and states continue to trip over themselves in their chase for an NFL team and don’t blink an eye with the cost of getting a team then we’ll continue down this road of neglecting our priorities.

Here in Louisiana we’ve seen more than our share of times when the NFL has hinted that the Super Dome is out of date and needs replacing. And it will happen and probably a lot sooner than later.

Till next week…
