THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Apparently it is just too much in this day and age. If you are paid to give your opinion on the hot sports topics of the day across the country, it is too much to first do some research and make sure you know what you are talking about. As a result, I suggest you join me and stop listening to any of those people.

I know College GameDay is neat when they are on your campus, but I am done with those guys. ESPN radio, CBS sports online, or any other national outlet? No clicks for you! They have just proven time and time again that they barely know the facts on the surface. For me, if it isn’t local, it is a complete waste of my time. Common sense tells me that if they barely know what is happening in my local stories, then why should I trust that they have a clue when they report on what is happening in Lincoln, Nebraska?

Let’s look at the LSU/Florida football game situation, and the ridiculous stances that these people have taken.

Some have just broadly said that the game has to be played. That stance has no counter argument for the fact that the game should have been played Sunday or Monday. If it HAS to be played, then it shouldn’t have been postponed indefinitely. I don’t want to hear any silliness about equipment trucks or anything else. Equipment managers can load those trucks in half a day and take turns driving through the night if necessary. I promise you those students have been asked to do crazier tasks.

Others have argued that the SEC commissioner should make the game happen at some point. If the commissioner had that power, then again, the game should have been played already. Obviously he doesn’t have that power or he is not willing to use it. If he actually does try, then he is a complete fool because he was dealing with just two schools last week. Playing the game at any other time this year requires him meddling with a minimum of four schools.

The really oblivious people have said that it is incumbent on LSU to change its schedule because Florida had the natural disaster affect them. Gainesville had barely any impact compared to Baton Rouge and the Flood of 2016. If someone defends Florida because football is not significant in the grand scheme of a hurricane, then why does the game HAVE to be played? It is just a game.

Many on the Florida side reacted as if it is insulting for the Gators to consider giving up a home game. Yet, South Carolina did it last year to get the game played, and LSU did it after Katrina when they went to Arizona State. Almost nobody outside of this state has made this point. It would be truly outrageous to expect LSU or anyone else to cancel another game to make up for the fact that Florida was unwilling to look at any other option than playing at home at 11:00 last Saturday.

Still others have said that playing Sunday or Monday was out of line for many reasons. Too close to the event, the game would interfere with school on campus, and not enough time to get that done. Again, LSU played Tennessee on a Monday after Rita and South Carolina played Georgia on Sunday this year. It could have been done if true leadership had existed.

The fact is that this situation was not unprecedented. Not even close. The handling of the situation by Florida and the SEC commissioner Greg Sankey was completely inept and indefensible. And don’t let anyone blame LSU. Not this time. Sorry. It was Florida’s home game and the SEC office runs the league.

There is no justification for asking any other schools to alter their schedules to accommodate the LSU/Florida game. For these people to even broach the subject to cover up their enormous ineptitude is insulting and cowardly.

Finally, don’t think for one second that the meetings at Florida regarding the game did not take into account their injuries quarterback and defensive line or the fact that playing one less game favors Florida. As a matter of fact, if those points did not come up then I would criticize their coaches and administrators even further. Of course, the Gators should consider those factors. That doesn’t make them scared, it makes them smart.

How is that any different than scheduling weak opponents before big games or a bye week before big games? It is the job of the school’s administration to represent the best interest of the school. That is the whole reason to have a league office and commissioner. Anyone who has played fantasy football much less runs a university or conference knows that.

While everyone is trying to find a way to make a terrible decision worse and play the game, I say it is time to move on from the horrible decision. It is over. Learn a lesson SEC because these situations are not unpredictable or unprecedented. Make a plan for the future, and let this embarrassment be motivation to insist upon better leadership in the future.

HEY REF

Welcome one and all to “TRUTH CENTRAL”! Like they say; if you can’t handle the truth… I’ve always prided myself in not beating around the bush, so to speak, and laying everything in the open so there will be no questions as to the things I write about. I’ve said time and time again that people are often misquoted but when you put your thoughts and ideas in print then there is no questions or excuses you can use in an attempt to reverse the meaning of the words people will read.

So with that statement locked squarely between your ears and nothing to interfere with your train of thought I must say with no hesitation that San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick is nothing more than a multi-millionaire hypocrite. From one side of his mouth he says one thing when in reality the facts of what he’s saying and doing on NFL sidelines is a sham. He’s using the attention for one thing and one thing only; he wants to stay relevant.

He lost his job and until last week was doomed to ride out the season on the bench as a very expensive, has never been quarterback. So, if he’s serious about wanting to do something to reverse the racism he claims is rampant in America then he’d do more than just run his mouth. While he rambles on about the plight of African Americans he does nothing to stop or reverse the racism he sees and says he deplores.

I thought he’d be living in ‘da hood and was a witness to the horrible treatment he claims so many black Americans face day after day and so on. But the facts are this; in 2014 he bought a 4,600 square foot mansion in the Silver Creek neighborhood for (are you ready for this?) $2.7 million dollars! He’s paid pretty nice too; in 2016 he’ make nearly $12 million, 2017 he’ll collect $14.5 million, 2018 a small raise to $15 million, 2019 a better raise to $16.8 million and in the final year he’s to deposit into his checkbook the tiny sum of $19 million.

I don’t see anything wrong in him being able to afford such luxuries since he’s a talented professional football player playing the toughest position in the toughest league on this planet. But what I will say if he’s so upset and disgusted at the many African Americans living in poverty then why hasn’t he bought a $25,000.00 house in a middle-class neighborhood and given his vast wealth to those that are in dire need?

The ONLY player and/or former player that has shown his willingness to help poor families is our own Warrick Dunn. I hate to promote anything but if you “GOOGLE” him you’ll see he’s got a charity where he builds homes, furnishes them and then gives them to needy families. Warrick Dunn has built and given homes to more than 100 families. If ever the black community needed a REAL HERO then there’s only one former player giving back to families in need.

Until I was left homeless by the recent floods I had no idea what being without a place to eat and sleep was really all about. Warrick lost his mother as we all know to violence and the legal system has left his family without any justice at all. But we don’t see him rambling on about the sad state of affairs in the black community, which he had all the right to feel that way. No, he continues to give back and he stands proudly when our National Anthem is played because no matter how bad things are in this country, America is the greatest place to live.

So, in closing America, Kaepernick is a multi-millionaire hypocrite and a spoiled little rich kid that should be helping those that need help and not making the too familiar symbolism over substance that’s running amuck in this country.

Till next week…
