9THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

By the time you read this article, LSU football fans that follow recruiting will be rejoicing or ready to fire Ed Orgeron yet again. The reason is Derek Stingley Jr. will have announced his verbal commitment to LSU, Texas, or Florida.

Stingley will be a senior this year at Dunham High School. He has great size for a cornerback at 6’0” and 193 pounds. He runs a 4.3 in the 40 and is rated as the top high school player in the country.

I wish Stingley the best of luck wherever he goes to college, but have recruiting fans not learned at all? Kevin Toliver II was rated as the top cornerback a few years ago. He barely played his first two years. Last year he was suspended early on and later in the year was a decent player who went undrafted.

Patrick Surtain Jr. (strange coincidence that top cornerbacks are “junior” or “second”) was the top cornerback last year who had been verbally committed to LSU for over a year. On signing day he chose Alabama.

Tiger fans have been down this road before. For every Patrick Peterson who was rated as the top cornerback, came to LSU, had a great career, and became one of the best players in the NFL there are just as many counterexamples. LSU’s reputation as DBU has certainly not been built on top prospects like Kevin Toliver and Savion Smith.

Meanwhile, LSU’s reputation has been built on Corey Webster, Morris Claiborne, Tyrann Mathieu Jr. (another junior), and Greedy Williams who were not highly thought of coming out of high school.

This perspective is not a slam on LSU. The same thing happens at other colleges, and we all know how the NFL draft is often a shot in the dark..

Don’t get me wrong, I want Stingley to commit AND attend LSU. I just know that celebrating on June 20 before Stingley plays his senior year of high school is kind of like celebrating the birth of a child because a couple decided to start attempting to conceive a child. Of course with all the silly gender reveals these days, I am sure celebrating the idea of possibly having a child will be the coming down the road in a few years.

HEY REF

He’s back! Well kinda, sorta. I say that because this week I’ll be as far away from reporting any type of news coming from the sport’s universe as Republican and Democratic politicians. Many of the people I know and have met can’t survive a day without hours and hours of getting in tune with the latest news coming from the NCAA or the NFL or the NBA. So please allow me to begin. I’ve been in a battle with possibly the worse disease mankind has been afflicted with.

No need to beat around the bush so what pray tell could this disease be? It’s a little thing that divides countries and destroys families. I’m talking about GREED! I’m the only child of 5 children that lives in Baton Rouge so it was put upon my shoulders to care for my parents. As they aged they slowly lost the ability to drive, walk and take care of themselves.

My parents lost everything to Katrina and moved to Baton Rouge after over 40 years living in the Lake View area. Whenever a storm come calling on the Big Easy they’d pack some cloths for a few days and would then head north and spend time with us. But Katrina made sure there’d be no return trip to the house they called home for all those decades. At the beginning they lived with us but wanted a FEMA trailer until they could figure out what they were going to do.

They decided to stay close to us in Central and bought a house just 5 minutes away. Fast forward to Aug. 2016 and it was my turn to lose everything in a flood. On the fifth day after the water took everything we owned my dad had a massive heart attack and died. Finding an undertaker and funeral home that was high and dry took a lot of searching. Previously we found out my stepmother had lung cancer and the doctors told us it was the worst kind and surgery was out of the equation.

The doctors gave her anywhere from 3 to 5 years “IF chemo worked and less than 3 if it didn’t”. God gave her and us five years to spend together and we could never be more thankful for those quick years. Since we lost everything we owned to the flood we had no choice but to move in with them. It was almost a replay of what Lady Katrina did to our parents. I had already begun taking care of my mom long before the flood of 2016 and the cancer diagnoses.

After the flood and the loss of my dad taking care of mom became a 24/7 job for me. I’d put my life on “hold” for over two years and only left a few times to go to services at my synagogue. It’s a job I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy because you see a perfectly fit human that you love become a walking zombie. In the last couple months she confided in me how sadden she became knowing the only time her two biological children came to visit was when she paid their expenses. She’d ask me “why do I have to pay my children to come visit me”? I had no answer for her.

But I didn’t even think they’d stoop so low as the day she died. While she was still in her bed and we are waiting for the funeral home to pick up her body her daughter says “I know it’s early but what about her Will”? Shock and disgust ran roughshod over us all. Her mother wasn’t even dead more than an hour and she’s asking about her Will. The next day my brother said on three separate occasions while getting her services booked the biological daughter asked about mom’s will. The biological son wanted to have her cremated to SAVE MONEY! He went so far as to say he didn’t want more than a thousand dollars to come out of his pocket to pay for a proper burial.

There were more times where the biological children asked about getting money from their dead mother. I didn’t get a cent from her for all the work I did getting her from doctor to doctor, to chemo sessions and the like. So, for me I’ve got to end this column now because it makes me sick to think of how they acted after their mother’s death. The biological son went back to R. I. because his daughter was graduating high school. He never returned for her funeral, wake or burial that was done in New Orleans.

I just had to get this off my chest so to speak. I want to say to everyone out there that when it comes between missing a football game, soccer match or a baseball game and spending time with your family and/or loved ones it’s best to not even think of sports because family is what counts. If your world revolves around little Johnny and his T-Ball game you’re better off spending time with family. Now that I’ve had my say I’ll do my best to come back next week with something more enjoyable than complaining about two money hungry children.

Till next week… …
