THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
While watching the LSU game, I was amazed at the clarity in which I could see the frustration of a Florida fan. For Seinfeld and Superman fans, this article is "Bizarro Wizadry of Os," as it will come from the perspective of a frustrated Florida fan.
Did Florida have a scouting report on LSU? If so, it should have had two main points. First, load up the box and out number LSU to stop the run. Second, Jennings is throwing to Dural and Harris to Dupre on passes over 10 yards.
If Florida had executed either, they would have won the game. Amazingly, the Gators played most of the game with 2 safeties and only 7 in the box. LSU's offensive line for the second time this year against a quality opponent (fourth quarter against Wisconsin) was blocking with equal numbers. Why not copy the other SEC teams' defensive plan and out number LSU between the tackles?
When LSU HAD to throw over 10 yards the players should have known Harris to Dupre and Jennings to Dural. It turns out Florida allowed Jennings to Dural to beat them uncontested. Of all the busts to make in coverage, don't leave one of those two alone with the matching quarterback.
On offense, how does Andre Dubose get one touch on offense? His two punt returns almost won the game. He had one carry for 35 yards and that was it. Zero catches, zero bubble screens, zero wide receiver screens, and one speed sweep for 35 yards. Jeff Driskel had 21 carries. What would have happened if Dubose had 3 of those 21?
Back from "Bizarro World," that was a huge win for LSU, but reality still says LSU has great room for improvement. The most fun LSU fans are probably going to have this year is to take advantage of the opportunity to play spoiler. I still expect the Tigers to drop two or three more games.
At the same time, I have a tough time believing Ole Miss can continue playing as well as they are right now. For once, LSU may as highly motivated to play Ole Miss and spoil there magical season like the Rebels typically feel about playing the Tigers. I think a win over Ole Miss or Alabama coupled with wins over Kentucky and Arkansas is the most reasonable expectation.
8-4 with a win over top 5 Ole Miss or Alabama at home isn't great, but could be enough to make the off season enjoyable. As long as, the team continues to improve and plays its best at the end of the year like Ole Miss did last year I think Tiger fans will be satisfied.
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
Is it me? Does anyone find it odd that intelligent, college educated people are finding it difficult explaining all the reasons why changes must be made to the NFL’s personal conduct policy? The man in charge, Commissioner Roger Goodell, seems to be walking on eggs in his attempt not to offend those that need to heed the warning that they are directly responsible for the many problems facing professional football.
To me these problems, too many to list in my limited space, are a direct reflection of the decline in our society. Many years ago the players and coaches that started the NFL seemed to know right from wrong. They understood they were being looked at as heroes and not gods as these players do today.
To think that the league went without a personal conduct code until 2007 should raise a huge red flag. Why does the league have to update this code of proper conduct after just a few years? Has society leaped so far forward that what was expected in ’07 is now out of date in ’14 and needs re-doing? Or is it a re-thinking that the Commissioner has to overhaul?
Whichever you decide it doesn’t matter because this Ref finds it insane the conduct of these so called athletes. And what’s even more unbelievable is the fact that the owners and the player’s union continue to have sit down talks on just what will be acceptable behavior by these millionaires. Has common sense not found a home in the upbringing of these players?
All employers have the right to expect their employees will conduct themselves in a matter that reflects a strict moral behavior. Every company that I’ve worked for expected me to obey the law. I wouldn’t be allowed to rob or rape or beat a woman unconscious or murder a single person without the possibility of losing my job. There are certain laws we all must obey no matter how fast we can run 40 yards.
The big thing that shouldn’t happen is not allowing the Commissioner the final say in all matters. He’s hired by the owners and I agree that may weigh in some of his judgments but he must be allowed to rule. I’m a retired union member and believe in the concept of union representation. But at the end of the day the ‘ole buck has to stop somewhere and in this case it has to stop with the Commissioner.
The union’s attempt to side step Goodell’s authority in handing out punishment by going to a “neutral” arbitrator is laughable. The NFL is a private company with contracts for all of its players. It’s these contracts that allow players the right to sue for any wrongs they feel they’ve suffered. Proper conduct is not something for the bargaining table.
Proper conduct seems to be something the vast numbers of players aren’t willing to abide by. For most of them they’ve been put on a pedestal, ordained and worshiped as some kind of a god because of what they can do on the playing field. It’s no secret that many of these kids are never disciplined and by the time they start playing for big bucks they just can’t or won’t be told what to do.
For many, many years these kids get away with just about everything because they know the coach will bail them out. The problems we see in the NFL and society as a whole are home grown. The solution to a lot of the ills with the younger generation starts with mom and dad.
It’s been that way since time began. I hope the NFL stays the course and starts to correct the wrongs that society seems unable or unwilling to do.
Till next week…
