FINE IDEAS
Ludicrous 1: amusing or laughable through obvious absurdity, incongruity, exaggeration, or eccentricity
A mockery has been made of Jerry West and the Los Angeles Lakers in a new series, “Winning Time”. West has been characterized as a bad guy. This is so far from the truth, as the Hall of Famer is probably a better person than a player—and he was an all-time great player.
Yes, I am biased towards Mr. Clutch (or Zeke from Cabin Creek or The Logo). As a little kid, I used to write to West, asking for his autograph a number of times. Each time, he’d respond with a self-inscribed autographed picture
One of the highlights of my broadcasting days was interviewing West at half-time of a McNeese State radio broadcast in the mid 80’s. He was as gracious and self-effacing as could be. He was almost embarrassed when I sang his praises in prefacing some questions. What an amazing person!
Creative License should be used to embellish a plot line or to give some further depth to a story or character. You don’t trash Jerry West and then claim you have the right to do so under Creative License. What the producers of this series are doing is to use West and the Lakers notoriety to attract viewers under false pretenses. It is not only preposterous, it is unconscionable.
Jerry West personifies class. Take out the cl and you can define the character of anyone responsible for “Winning Time”.
Take a failed business idea… resurrect it with even less financial wherewithal and a goofy business model 25+ years later. That pretty much describes USFL Part II.
The initial USFL actually produced a decent product in the spring of 1983, 1984 and 1985. A foolhardy decision to look to move their league to the fall to compete against the NFL in 1986 never materialized and marked the demise of the league.
Same names of teams and football in the spring have reemerged in the reinvented league in 2022. Yet, the league is playing all its games in Birmingham this season. With the initial USFL, you at least had such recognizable names as Marcus Dupree, Larry Csonka, Reggie White, Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Herschel Walker and many others played in the league. At present, there really are no major attractions.
There is a television contract with NBC, Fox and others. But, why watch? Not for the football value, as this is more semi-pro than professional. And, is one to have an allegiance to a team when the games are not even being played in that team’s city?
I’m guessing that because of financial shortcomings, the premise is to play games in one locale (Birmingham) in year 1, build up fan bases this season and use this to catapult into team’s home markets in 2023. This is specious business logic, at best. At worst, it is ridiculous.
The USFL has one and done written all over it.
We can only hope and pray that Britney Griner is released from her captivity in Russia and the WNBA star can return to the US and resume here playing career. Yet, it was brought up by a national columnist that Griner should never have had to be in Russia, where she played basketball, to supplement her WNBA income. Pay Equity was the rationale. If Griner got paid as much as NBA stars, she would not have had to play overseas and never would have been in Russia, this columnist asserted.
Ironically, if it was not for the NBA propping up the WNBA, there’d be no professional women’s basketball in our country. The NBA is a multi-billion dollar industry. The WNBA—multi $10 industry? In a perfect world, the WNBA would be on a par with the NBA in fan interest, ticket purchases and television ratings. The reality is that there is no comparison. Until the WNBA is able to build up its product to the point that its revenues are competitive with the NBA, its player’s salaries should not, equitably, be competitive with those of the NBA. One thing we can all get behind is getting Griner back to our country.
The last 2 New Orleans Saints play-by-play announcers had no previous play-by-play experience when they were hired. No NFL, no college, no high school… no Pee Wee league tapes to submit with their application. This is for one of the 32 premier positions in all of sports broadcasting.
As a follow-up to the last FINE IDEAS, which espoused Kim Mulkey to become the next men’s basketball coach at LSU, here is a comparison between Mulkey and the MAN LSU hired as its new basketball coach, Matt McMahon:
Matt McMahon: 7 years as a head coach (all at Murray State), overall record: 154-67… prior year to McMahon taking over as head coach of the Racers, they went 29-6. In fact, the Racers won more than 20 games in all 4 seasons McMahon had served as an assistant coach to Steve Prohm at Murray State
3 of McMahon’s 7 teams at Murray State made the NCAA Tournament, advancing twice to the round of 32… all of his playing and coaching career was spent outside of the state of Louisiana… all of McMahon’s experience has been in Men’s Basketball.
Kim Mulkey has had 22 years as a head coach (21 at Baylor, 1 at LSU) overall record: 658-110. Mulkey inherited a Baylor program that had gone 7-20 the prior season and led them to 21 wins and the NCAA Tournament in her first season. When all was said and done, her teams at Baylor won 3 national championships, 1 additional Final Four and 8 additional Elite Eights…
She inherited an LSU team that went 9-13 and took them to a 26-6 record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament
She played her high school and college ball in Louisiana and spent 16 seasons as a Louisiana Tech assistant before leaving for Baylor
All of Mulkey’s experience has been in Women’s Basketball.
Ludicrous.
