THE DRU NETTLES SHOW PROPAGANDA

Hello Jon… Just a note from one of your silent viewers who enjoyed your program muchly, a sentiment you might otherwise not know of, as I imagine there are many others as well. It was a varied, interesting format--always colorful and entertaining--and a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school, coaches, and athletes. There's nothing quite as important as celebrating small town America--the backbone of our nation--and you and Coach Nettles did a great job! Looking forward to tuning in again next summer.

Best Regards… Jim, Denham Springs

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

So the last couple of weeks have been tough as a football fan in Louisiana, and last week was my time to wallow in pity. My best hope for joy would have been if Bama winning it all had acted as a spring board for their coach and talented juniors to bolt for the NFL. It appears that is NOT happening.

Nevertheless, now it is time to move on and find a brighter future. The place for hopeless optimism can be found in recruiting. I am sorry to say, I watched the big High School All-Star games this weekend with the hope of seeing the type of talent that can come in and help immediately for LSU next year. After watching, I have good news and bad news.

Before I state my opinion, I want to let the record show that I know what I am about to say ignores many factors that go into a players success in college. The ability to learn the scheme quickly and adjust to the rigors of college are just a couple of hurdles. In addition, one All-Star game is not a good predictor of a player’s ability. But, I will state my opinion on what I saw as if it means something anyway.

Having cleared that up, here is the bad news. There is not any help for next year on the offensive side of the ball. I saw players that will be good one day, but not anyone that will play early and make a difference. A major factor in my statement is the number of returning starters LSU has on offense. Still, I would expect all of the offensive recruits in the games this weekend to redshirt.

The other bad news is that I don’t think any of the defensive tackles will be able to help immediately. I think they are raw, and that is bad news at a position that LSU will be very thin.

The good news is I see a number of other defensive players that should play and contribute. Tredavious White, Kendall Beckwith, and Frank Herron should at the least play on special teams. If LSU is able to sign Priest Willis and Robert Nkemdiche, they will play immediately as well.

The other good news is that there are other players LSU will sign that didn’t play in those games that could help next year.

Next year will be one of those years where LSU will need players to develop ahead of the curve in order to stay in the Top 10. The Tigers most talented players that need to be replaced are on defense, and from what I saw, there are players they will sign that have the ability to continue the tradition of excellent defense at LSU.

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie,

Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

Oh, well, the hat goes back in the closet. After ten years, I thought, finally I can dust off the Blue and Gold Irish cap worn so many years with pride. But everything we Irish fans had hoped for swiftly went ‘round the bowl and down the hole last Monday night. In what seemed, on paper anyway, to finally be a competitive Championship game was nothing more than complete dominance by Alabama’s Tide.

They say the spoils go to the victor! But the real victors Monday night have to be just about every other television network that had been scrambling for weeks to offer some other form of entertainment. This so called game was over after a scant five minutes of the first quarter. To those of us that KNOW football and have witnessed the clashing of champions this game was neither. Alabama blew away any hope the Irish had simply by playing SEC football.

Notre Dame’s coaching philosophy was to continue doing the same thing they’d done all year. Play aggressive football while on defense and hope like Hell while in possession of the ball to get a few cracks at the Bama goal line. Neither tactic was a sane way to come into this game. Bama was able to do it because their defensive line controlled every inch of the playing field.

As I watched the first quarter end all I could think was we’ll get ‘em before half time. Hah!! Period #2 opened up a huge gash in any hope the Irish had of a comeback. Before I got back from the cold drink container quarterback AJ McCarron sealed the Irish’s fate by leading his third touchdown drive in just over fifteen minutes.

Spotting Bama one point will usually cost you in the end but 21 was pure suicide. The defense that brought Notre Dame an undefeated season never got off the bus. And as I’ve been known to say and write; “Offenses win you games, defenses win you championships” but showing up without either is insanity!

The third phase of the Irish’s attack that was left back in South Bend was of course COACHING! STRIKE THREE!!! Nick Saban has proved there is no other coach in the history of Championship Games that can touch him. In this world of paying coaches just about anything they want would someone please tell me just how did Baton Rouge lose King Nicky?

I’ve never said a coach should be paid 5 million a year as Saban is and I won’t say it now. He can win another five titles all in a row but no coach is worth that kind of money unless your priorities are to win at all cost. See, I told you I wasn’t caving in to all the pressure I’ve had to endure since Monday’s rendition of Custer’s Last Stand. I tell all my Notre Dame fans that somebody should’ve pulled the plug on the lights because this game should never have been televised in its entirety.

There’s a very famous line in history that goes something like “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do”. In fact I said those very words as I grabbed for the remote and put this game sleep. Iactually turned the game off with about nine minutes left before half time. The only thing in doubt was what the final score would be. And maybe we can all learn from this exhibition of a southern (derrierre)-whipping. There’s a small four letter word that’ll be the most important thing before the 2014 season begins. The word is: BIDS…

The city that’ll host all of the final Championship Games will be the one that ponies up the most CASH! YES, who’s going to want to spend millions on putting a proposal together and be awarded with another game like we just witnessed? Just the proposals will be in the millions, the game itself will be close to a BILLION by the end of the newest playoff format that goes for the next 12 years.

I hope I’m wrong but come on, who are we kidding? The ref’s NEVER wrong!!!

Till next week… …
