FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For the first time ever, Live Oak HS and Walker HS will have a slate of live radio broadcasts for one of its teams’ games. A broadcast of 4 games each for Walker HS and Live Oak HS Baseball will be carried, beginning in late March, as a Jon Fine Production, on 1210AM, Baton Rouge. The first broadcast will be on Friday, March 29, when Walker HS travels to Livingston Parish rival Albany HS. The first Live Oak HS broadcast will be Thursday, April 4, when the Eagles play host to the Walker HS Wildcats.

Producer Jon Fine, who says that 1210AM, Baton Rouge will also carry all Walker HS and Live Oak HS Baseball post-season games, was excited about these broadcasts. “We look forward to having these games air on 1210AM. If we can get enough support in the Watson and Walker communities and we do a good job on the broadcasts, we hope that this will be a prelude to a more extensive Baseball broadcast schedule next year for these two schools. Also, with sufficient sponsorship, we should have the opportunity to broadcast other Walker HS and Live Oak HS sports teams’ games on the radio in ensuing years.”

Fine said that he hopes to release the official 8-game broadcast package in mid-March. Certain broadcast times are still being worked out. All games will also be carried live, on the Internet, at JonFineProductions.com. Chris Ledoux will be the Walker HS color commentator. The Walker play-by-play announcer and Live Oak play-by-play and color announcer have not yet been hired.

1210AM carried Denham Springs HS sports broadcasts for several decades, up until 2012, when a change in station format prevented the station from continuing to carry Yellow Jackets’ broadcasts. Fine said that Denham Springs Baseball was committed this year to have a number of its games carried on the Internet-based Bayou Sports Network.

THE WIZARDY OF OS

By Scott Osborne,

Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach, Central HS

Would you rather have high expectations for your team, or low expectations? Think about it LSU fans. In football and baseball you expect LSU to be in the top 5 at the end of every year, and you are disappointed when the Tigers fall short of those expectations.

Then there is LSU basketball. Coming into the year, we didn't know what to expect, but we were pretty sure we shouldn’t expect much. Most of the players were new, and they weren't hyped as great players. Yet, the basketball team has been fun to watch for many reasons.

The team competes for the entire game which has led to many comebacks whether they won in the end or not.

The style of play is fun to watch and it fits the Tigers personnel. Personally, I get frustrated watching players struggle because they are being asked to do things that are not in their skill set. Coach Jones is putting his small, quick guards in positions to be successful.

It is easy to observe the improvement of certain players. Johnny O'Bryant and Andrew Del Pierro to name a couple.

This group of guys looks like they enjoy playing together and share the basketball. Playing together, sharing the ball, five guys playing as one is what attracted me to the game as a kid, and it is nice to see in any basketball game I watch.

Of course, I would like LSU basketball to grow into a national power one day that regularly finishes in the top 10. Regardless, the many stages of growth in a college program can be fun to experience. I know I am enjoying this season, and the prospects for the future.

HEY REF

How many so called football fans remember this now famous quote “If there is a strike, I’ll take a salary of $1.00”? It came from none other than NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell when at the time we all held our collective breathes praying that we’d not have a strike by the NFL players. As it turned out the owners came to his rescue and LOCKED the players out getting the commish off a massive hook. I said it back then and I’ll say it again, pay attention to the words you say because they will come back to haunt you.

The key word in the whole statement was “strike” and hence the owners knew we’d either have a settlement before the current CBA expired or Goodell had cards that he’d not shown the owners. As was in this case, Goodell was playing with fire and should’ve been burned to the crisp as the players help together and the commish needed an “out”.

I can imagine what the owners were thinking when he educated them that he’d been playing the “mother of all bluffs” in the history of contract negotiations. So, to get their boy out of some very, very hot water they had no choice but to padlock all the gates and tell the players (at that time) that they weren’t wanted. So, now what are we gonna do with Roger? Well, first things first, NEVER remind anyone of what he had said. And if anyone asks just tell them “we didn’t have a STRIKE but a LOCKOUT!

The NFL has filed its tax returns for that locked out season and Mr. Goodell was paid, at least on paper, a rather comfortable salary of $29.5 MILLION! His whole package is well in excess of around $35 million a year!! I know that doesn’t sit well with many fans but when you look at what CEO’s at CBS, Viacom, Disney, Comcast and Time Warner, to mention a few, are paid (over $110 MILLION a year), Goodell might just be a bargain?

I know that isn’t a fair comparison since the NFL doesn’t use him to act like a CEO since they are a group of individual businesses and each separate one has their own CEO. Mr. Goodell will tell us that his job is tougher than your average CEO since he’s repeatedly asked to be in front of the TV camera. I’m serious, he believes that. The pressure of looking good all the time in case a network camera is rolling has got to put more pressure on a man that the entire Steelers defense.

Now let’s get to the little things that are compted the commish. You know those small things like first class airfare anytime and anywhere he wants to go. Only the best of the best hotels will do for our boy Roger. A limousine and driver to pick you up all around the globe and you can be sure he’s not stepped foot in a Motel 6 even if they can keep the lights on unlike that small stadium that the Saints play in. Dinning and dinner at only the best of restaurants of course are included in his package.

Enough trying to make you jealous of this hard working man, no, not gonna do that. But what I will say is this; the next time game tickets go up, parking goes up, hotel rooms go up, gas goes up, meals go up, taxi rides go up remember this one thing, the NFL is a privately run business supported by TAXPAYERS and the only way it can pay the bills is to turn a profit. If the business can’t pay its bills then it’ll go under. But here in the good ‘ole USA we can’t live without football so just dig a lot deeper so they can continue to pay individuals lie Roger Goodell even more next year and the next and the next!!!

I believe the commish should be paid a straight across the board salary equal to and no more than the highest paid PLAYER! After all, aren’t you paying (or charging) all the bills? If you disagree with me then instead of taking your wife out to eat or your family on vacation, send all your disposable income to Roger Goodell in care of the NFL Owners.

Till Next week…
