THE WIZARDRY OF OS

We are halfway(-ish) through the football season and I need to get a few things off my chest. Before I do, I want to qualify my first vent.

First, I know it is difficult to coordinate a group of people. I also know that sometimes the lack of execution can make the design look terrible. Last, I want to acknowledge that the design of an offense or defense can prevent a group for playing together and playing fast. With those thoughts in mind, here is my first vent.

Of course, I have to start with the Saints on offense. Why does the Tayson Hill package have to be one play at a time? I would really like to see what it would look like to have a successful Taysom Hill run, then hurry to the line, and run another play. While I am at it, I still cannot understand why the ratio of Hill run plays to pass plays is 171:1 (I know I exaggerate… a tad). For an offense that is struggling so badly, it is frustrating to see success and immediately go back to a disjointed mess.

The Saints don’t have receivers that can consistently win fades. Stop throwing it to them, especially on fourth down and the game on the line. Jimmy Graham might win one, try him. But, not with the game on the line.

I still don’t understand what the Saints defense has done to be considered anywhere near one of the best in the league. The Saints have not seen any of the best offenses. This defense is not one of the best at sacking the quarterback or creating turnovers. There are no Pro Bowl players in the front four. The top defenses, like the Browns and Niners have All Pro players on their front four who constantly harass and knock down the quarterback. The Saints defense is average. The stats have to be measured against the quality of the offenses.

OK, I feel better now.

As for the Jaguar game, I watched my first game on Amazon Prime. So many times I watch NFL games on other networks and they don’t have an angle to show if the catch hit the ground or the player was inbound. Amazon had every angle, and angles that we never get. They had angles of the game and the Dome I haven’t seen.

We must recognize that Jayden Daniels is having the second best season of any LSU quarterback, ever. Obviously, the best season was Joe Burrow in 2019. Daniels won’t be able to surpass that year because Burrow’s team went undefeated. While Burrow’s passing was a little better, Daniels running is considerably better.

As for comparing the entire offense in 2019 to this year, I believe the offensive line this year is a little better. Though, it is very close. Clearly, the depth at running back is better this year and Diggs is very powerful, but Edwards-Helaire was tremendous. His runs against Alabama to carry the pile and spin away from unblocked defenders were incredible. Nothing against this year’s group, but the receivers in 2019 were truly once in a lifetime special.

The 2019 offense was more talented and the best I have ever seen. That being said, this year’s offense has been fabulous and young which means it has room for growth. Hopefully, they can keep getting better and continue to carry this team.
