THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Time to face facts Tiger fans. We are half way through the regular season and LSU is not an elite team this year.

Give Florida credit. Their offensive coaches did a tremendous job (as Gary Danielson pointed out) making the LSU defense think with different personnel, formations, and motion. At one point they ran the ball 15 times in a row, were physical, and still were not predictable. Florida found a way to get their play makers the ball in space despite having average talent at wide receiver.

As for LSU, forget expectations, star ratings, and what players did last year. Based off how LSU has played on the field in six games, I am confident to make the following statements about LSU’s ability this year in comparison to the rest of the SEC.

LSU is below average at quarterback. We were hoping to be above average, but we are not. Everyone says Rob Bolden is not ready because he just got to LSU, but I don’t understand why he can run a ten play package after playing for Penn State as a true freshman just to give the defense something to think about.

LSU is slightly above average at running back in a league that is loaded with good running backs. LSU has yet to find one workhouse, and it appears as though the running backs can’t make something happen on their own. Obviously, the loss of Blue has been huge.

The wide receivers are below average. Maybe they could be used better, but drops and fumbles at this rate are alarming. Count me as one of the ones that was fooled after week one.

The tight ends and offensive line are above average. This group was thought to be elite, but the loss of Faulk has been too much to overcome. Some people may disagree with my assessment, but it is hard to run against the opponent when they have you outnumbered.

LSU’s defensive line is above average, but was also suppose to be elite. The defensive tackles have not progressed as much as hoped.

LSU’s linebackers are slightly above average. I have been pleased to watch this young group play. They are very effective and solid. Minter is playing like an All-American.

The defensive backs are above average which is incredible considering all they lost from last year. The biggest disappointment has been Eric Reid who was supposed to be a play maker.

The specialty players have performed well below expectation and I would say they have been average as well. It is shocking that LSU doesn’t have better options for kickoff return.

After the first week or two, I thought the game plan could still be for LSU to be a dominant team that doesn’t do anything fancy put run right at the defense. I don’t think that way anymore, and I think the coaches would be well served to adjust the plan for a team who does not have the ability to be dominant against the SEC. That means stealing possessions when possible, finding a way to generate some easy scores, and trying things they haven’t tried before.

In the beginning of this article, I said that LSU fans have to face facts. I hope Coach Miles is also ready to face facts as I read in one article a comment where he said offensively these are not new problems. The numbers back that up. Dating back to the regular season game at Alabama last year, LSU has played 6 conference teams away from home. Against Ole Miss and Georgia, LSU scored 9 offensive touchdowns. In the other four games, LSU has scored one offensive touchdown.

As a result, I am also confident in this last statement. Unless LSU makes some drastic changes on offense to match their personnel, they will lose to Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas A&M.

HEY REF

Trying to save face is about the ONLY thing I can say about the NFL’s apparent attempt at explaining why THE T. D. at the end of the Packers – Seahawk’s game that ended the lockout of its regular officials wasn’t overturned. A memo put out from league headquarters last Tuesday stated the reason the touchdown shouldn’t have been overturned was there just wasn’t any “indisputable evidence to reverse the call made on the field”.

Excuse me, not enough proof? Are you kidding me? These guys will piss on your back and then try to tell you it’s raining. I beg to differ Mr. Owner, there was very much proof that there a mistake was made on the play that the owners went into a 24 hour meeting to end the lockout. There WAS enough proof to finally put an end to the lockout that was into its fourth month! Why is it so painful to admit you were wrong? Should we ever question the mindset of these modern day owners?

I still am not sure what film the league’s owners were looking at but the film being shown by every network showed without a doubt the call made on the field was VERY wrong. But these owners have egos so large that they to this day will say “The call was the right one to make”! I can bet you that if we have the same instance on the field with the regular refs the man upstairs WILL OVERTURN THE CALL.

Football fans better enjoy the next eight years of games because there’s gonna be a repeat of wanting players and game officials to take steep cuts in pay. I’ve been trying to find any evidence of the league lowering New England’s coach Bill Belichick’s $50,000 fine for grabbing a replacement official’s arm after yet another bad call that cost the Patriots one game. Redskin’s offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is also hoping to have his $25,000 fine reduced placed on him for what the league call “abuse of officials” in their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Two other coaches were fined Denver’s John Fox and Jack Del Rio, for speaking their minds on the subject of the jobs these replacements were doing. Ain’t it strange that in this land of free speech there are times when you don’t have it because your employer has taken away your very basic rights?

But even though we’ve got the real officials back not all is going smooth at some games. Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith was ejected during the second quarter of the team’s win over the Tennessee Titans. But after fellow Viking cornerback Antoine Winfield intercepted Matt Hasselbeck’s pass Smith was seen shoving Titan’s Nate Washington before officials could break them up.

Game officials tried to separate the players but as he was being pulled away Smith threw the official off him. And guess who happened to be in the stands? None other than the Big Guy himself, Commissioner Roger Goodell. So we expect a heavy fine to be handed down very soon. I guess you can’t please everyone.

Referee Jeff Triplette told reporters that Smith “grabbed the official when the official was trying to separate them and pushed the official to the side” which of course is an automatic ejection. Seems the honeymoon is already over for the guys in stripes. Looks like things are returning to normal, hope you didn’t expect the players to respect the officials for more than a minute or two. Just wouldn’t be the same… … …
