THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Watching LSU baseball and writing about LSU baseball are not easy things to do these days. I had half an article written, took a second to read what I had written, and thought to myself, “Who would want to read that negative pile of garbage?”
The sad part is I wasn’t trying to be negative. But watching LSU down 6-0 to another in state school, not throwing strikes, making weak contact, while knowing that LSU is headed to Arkansas without its best starting pitchers, coming off losing two out of three, and being in danger of not hosting a regional with a team that was expected to be in the top five all year is hard to find positives to write about. How do you like that last sentence?
I would write about the NBA playoffs, but my feelings are not much more pleasant. I fear we are moving into an era of NBA basketball similar to the late nineties. Every offensive possession in the late nineties looked the same because they shortened the distance for a three point shot. Every possession started with a post feed to Shaq, Hakeem, Barkley, or someone in the post. They would wait for a double team.
If the double team came, they kicked the ball out and tried to find the open three before the defense rotated. If the double team did not come, the inside player made a post move. There was little player movement and no penetration because the defense could hand check and shut down penetration.
We have been spoiled in recent years. The Spurs and Warriors have treated us to tremendous ball movement and player movement. But that has changed.
Teams shoot the three so well right now that everyone switches on defense. Nobody cares about mismatches on the inside because nobody has post moves to score inside. Since everyone switches, teams just ball screen until they get the perimeter matchup they want and somebody shoots a step back three or drives and forces a shot one on one. Meanwhile, the other players stand around the arc.
Like I said, it is very similar to the nineties, but instead of starting with a post feed, teams start with isolations or post feeds. The exception is the Nuggets who have a unique player in Nikola Jokic.
The NFL is in one of its rare periods of little to no news, and I just don’t care enough or know enough about horse racing to share an opinion on the Kentucky Derby. As a Saints fan, I do wish envy the fact people are complaining that the Derby officials took the time to make a rules based decision. If the NFL did the same thing, the Saints would have been in the Super Bowl.
Even after changing topics, this week had a pretty negative slant. Maybe some positive will happen over the course of the week.
HEY REF
I guess I’m about to irritate a lot of LSU basketball fans when I say that troubled head coach Will Wade shouldn’t be employed at the Baton Rouge campus or anywhere else for that matter. LSU’s new Athletic Director, Scott Woodward has been quoted that he hopes Wade “will be LSU’s coach for a long time”. But LSU’s lawyers have included a new clause that if things do start going downhill then they’ll be able to fire Wade without a hearing. It’s beyond me trying to make sense of this situation since Wade was recorded admitting to a $300,000 payment to land forward Naz Reid.
May I ask one thing; just where did the money come from and who cashed the check? Or was it in cash? I am unable to find out those facts. But it would seem the best thing for LSU to do is cut all ties with him until all the facts are in. Don’t try and tell me you’re innocent in this country until proven guilty because much better men have lost jobs with a lot less accusations being made about them.
LSU is putting winning ahead of the right thing it should be doing and that is terminating his employment. They see the huge influx of dollars Wade is bringing in and don’t want that to end over these “petty” charges of accepting bribes to land some big fish to play basketball in a football crazed town. As part of being reinstated Wade forfeited bonuses he earned due to his Tigers SEC championship and other changes to his contract.
Wade also “agreed” to give up the $250,000 in other contract bonuses he was due to make for taking LSU to the Sweet 16 round of this year’s March Madness, NCAA Tournament. This year’s achievement was by far the most successful a Tigers team has done in more than a decade. And part of his new contract he’s given LSU the right to fire him if he’s caught committing a Level I or Level II NCAA violation.
The difference being a Level I violation is a severe breach of conduct while a Level II being a significant breach of conduct. This is about as ludicrous as it gets for me. My only question for the NCAA is how do you measure a sin? Is sin a sin? I’d like to know how they go about in defining an instance as being either severe or being significant. Maybe they’d define the difference in the amount of money being accepted. Sorta like if you don’t accept more than a million dollars then we’ll label the offense as being just a severe instance and so on.
Now here’s where the obscene takes on another life; LSU’s interim vice president, Jason Droddy, said this of Wade’s contract being amended “This amendment to Will Wade’s contract represents a strong commitment by Coach Wade to the integrity of the institution and to his continued cooperation in partnership with LSU. We are pleased we were able to come to this agreement as we move forward in this process”.
Excuse me VP Droody but by keeping Wade on as coach you’ve removed all doubt. The fact is there isn’t anything close to integrity in this situation. The definition of INTEGRITY is; “The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles”. I’m sorry but I can’t accept somebody either taking or making a bribe as being a person that’s honest or one that has strong moral principles.
As far as Wade being an honest man that went out the window as I have this memory of another Baton Rouge citizen claiming they were sorry for their actions and wanting to be forgiven. I still have vivid memories of Jimmy Swaggart when he cried alligator tears after getting caught not once but twice with hookers/prostitutes saying he’s sinned against us.
So too just like Jimmy, Wade isn’t sorry for what he did, oh no! He’s sorry he got caught. I know this happens at many, many other schools and again let me just say one more time, PAY THE PLAYERS. Coaches, schools and conferences make billions of dollars on the backs of young kids and it’s past time they be included when it comes time to cut the cake…
Till next week…
