THE WIZARDRY OF OS
As of Sunday at 3:00, I was going to write about the proposed kickoff changes for the NFL in this article. I was going to point out the irony that Greg Schiano would be leading the charge considering how he had his defense handle late game situations early in the year.
Then the Saints kicked off to the Giants. The Giants kickoff return team consistently ran down the field like it was a walk through practice against air, and I was wondering if we could expedite the rule change. I am dumfounded by the Saints inability to adjust during the game and stubbornness to just squib kick or sky kick to an up back at to the 25 like most high school coaches would have done.
In an extremely frustrating season, the Saints lost another game where they gave the ball away and made it way to easy on the opponent with field position.
The fact is I am in need of therapy for this NFL season. From bounties, to suspensions, to losing draft picks, to alleged wiretapping, to holdouts, to the referee strike, to 0-4, to 5-5, and now 5-8, this season (dating back to the spring) has been mostly agonizing.
With Christmas approaching I am going to make a new wish list to Santa regarding the NFL and the Saints:
• Sean Payton’s return to the Saints without contract issues. I fully believe they will get the extension done, but I would appreciate if it could get done quickly and quietly.
• Speed on defense. The Saints have emphasized the intelligence of their defensive personnel which is important. But speed has got to be emphasized the way the NFL is played these days.
• I think the next item will be easier if the first two happen. I would like a season where the Saints win the turnover ratio in the majority of our games. Sean Payton should help the offense take care of the little things, and speed on defense usually translates to forcing turnovers.
• A season without allowing our opponent to break a record or win the Player of the Week award every other week. As bad as the season has been, it is worth noting that the Saints would have won 2-3 more games if they would have just been bad on defense and special teams at times instead of historically horrific.
• A draft where the Saints pick all defensive players. The situation is that desperate.
• Lastly for Christmas I do NOT want the Falcons to make the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
I have already read some articles questioning the direction of the Saints and wondering if this season means impending doom for the future.
Even with the horrendous defensive numbers the Saints are talented enough to have made the playoffs. The troubling aspect of the season is how the Saints have played. The giveaways, the busted assignments on defense and other issues are seemingly correctable because I have seen glimpses of what the team is capable. In the past, the Saints have talked about playing complimentary football, and this season they have been anything but complimentary between the different phases of the game.
People should not forget the unprecedented adversity this team faced. It is not an excuse, but it is also a fact. At the same time, the Saints played one of the most difficult schedules in the league.
As bad as things have been at times, a turn around next season is likely and should be expected as long as the leadership returns to its pre 2012 form.
Thank you, Paul Tagliabue, for showing common sense and fairness to the Saints situation,
HEY REF
“But your honor; we’ve still got a body in the morgue”! That’s exactly how I answered when the question was asked of me. Sheer disbelief was also another thought that came to mind. After hearing and reading former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue’s ruling on the punishment handed out to present and former Saint’s players by Roger Goodell, the man in power today, for their involvement in a hurt ‘em for a dollar scheme I’m still trying to find any reason to agree with what went down Tuesday.
First things first, IN NO WAY DOES THIS “SHAM RULING” SAVE THE NFL!! I can’t say it enough or load enough for the masses to know this will in my opinion hurt the overall game of professional football. Why? It borders on the insanity of a killer getting away with the crime by admitting their guilt but paying no consequences due to a technicality in the wording. Remember all the players in this circus are lawyers and know how to cheat the system.
To come out and say they are guilty of the offenses but vacate their punishment makes no sense to me. How can you rationalize this insane ruling? I compare it to somebody pleading “no contest” to murder, when in all actuality they did the crime but since there weren’t any witnesses and we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings so we let them plead out and go on their merry way.
If anyone thinks for a minute the coaches/players, etc. that received fines and/or were suspended did nothing wrong then that’s the big problem I have with this whole nasty ordeal. Being involved with Jr. and Sr. high players I can tell you this without hesitation that they imitate those players no matter if it’s good or bad. In a time in our nation’s history where we’re doing everything possible to teach our children right from wrong and the consequences you’ll have to pay for stepping out of line this really throws those young minds for a loop.
All players are seen as a hero to someone’s child somewhere. Allowing professional players a way to short the system will come back to haunt all involved. I’ve been told on countless occasions whenever I meet a celebrity no matter in the sport’s world or films, it makes no difference to me, that “You treat them like ordinary people”. And my comeback is always “that’s because they are”!
Let’s see if I can get some to remember a certain NFL player that was involved in having his girlfriend and mother of his child murdered? Rae Carruth, real name Rae Lamar Wiggins, wide receiver for the NFL’s Panthers did in fact sit by and watch this horrible murder. Many other stars have been involved in DWI’s, domestic violence, tax fraud, on and on. They are nothing more than common criminals and they feel above the law.
Any player trying to cause physical injury and jeopardizing someone else’s career should be dealt with the utmost swiftness and should be penalized in the harshest way possible. The NFL is a private business and they alone should police their people. The commissioner shouldn’t have his rulings second guessed. It’s not a public entity where civilian laws on the books would take precedence.
I’m sorry if many feel like it’s our home team and can do no wrong but remember when the worm turns your voice will be muted simply because the latest ruling will be brought up time and time again to defend those wanting to play outside the rules. If this were the “Old West” you might say I’m a Hanging Judge. As history has taught us when you relax punishment more times than any people will take the risk simply because the penalty is not severe enough to keep some from trying to get away with it.
I can tell you without hesitation each and every time we have an injured player laying on the field his coaches and parents are screaming at us to throw a flag for the hit that took little Johnny out of the game. And I can tell you this truth the player getting ready for the play will just have this little smile on his face and will say “I saw that same hit in Green Bay last Sunday” and of course he’ll “high-five” the rest of his teammates.
This “sham” ruling will hurt the game on every level played. So, please don’t yell at me when your son is in the hospital after someone laid him out because we just don’t want to hurt any player’s feelings and then allow them to continually abuse the playing rules without any consequences.
Till next week… …
