The Leader of Men (and women), Wayne Leader will look to continue an amazing Purple and Gold streak. The Central Chamber president (and owner of AA Mini-Storage and Central Super Suds, where he sponsors The Leader Report on THE CENTRAL STORY) has attended every LSU football game since 1976. In those 37 years, Wayne (who claims to be 32 years old) had attended, by Jon’s upper level Caculus (sic), 446 straight games. We’ll have more information on The Streak just before football season.

The Atlanta Hawks signed Jon Koncak to a 6 year, 13 million dollar contract in 1989. Koncak was a career backup at the time and the contract made him higher paid than Magic, Larry, and MJ at the time. I remember as soon as I heard of that contract, I thought to myself that the Hawks were the most foolish franchise in the world.
This week, I think the Pelicans (I am proud I typed it right the first time) need to find such a foolish franchise. The reason is that I think this is one of those drafts where we will look back in 3 years and have a tough time remembering who was picked in the lottery because so few of them will have an impact. As I can best recall, it is usually a bad sign when there is speculation before the draft that the first pick may be a player that averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds on an average team. Fortunately, the Pelicans are not picking first.
I would love for some team to be willing to give the Pelicans two draft picks or a veteran and a draft pick for the 6th pick. If that does not happen, I think the Pelicans have some tough decisions to make.
For my money, Trey Burke is the best player in the draft. I think he is the most complete player whose game translates to the NBA the fastest. In addition, inthink his style of play would go very well with the players already on the roster. Most people think he will be available for the Hornets to choose. There are just two problems with that choice, though.
First, the Pelicans already have Vasquez, Gordon, Roberts, and Rivers. There are not enough minutes to justify those five players for 2 spots on the floor at a time. Consequently, the Pelicans would have to trade Vasquez, Gordon, or Rivers. The only one who I think would get even close to market value is Vasquez. The bad news there is he is the most reliable of the three players I listed.
Second, the Hornets two biggest needs are an athletic small forward that can score, and a post player that can score with his back to the basket. Anthony Bennett is the best "inside" player in the draft, but at 6'7" it is hard to see how he would fit with the current roster. As for athletic small forwards, Otto Porter is pretty good, but not very athletic and should be gone by the 6th pick anyway. The other possibilities are definitely not worth that high a draft pick.
So, what should the Pelicans do? I still say their best option is to find one team that is foolish. I am hoping they are able to draft Burke and trade away Rivers or Vasquez. If they can't find a team to get that done or trade down, then I would choose Bennett. The other small forwards are just too much of a gamble to me at this point. Monty Williams will just have to get creative with his line-ups to get Bennett to fit.
The other news I want to comment on is the College World Series. UCLA's championship just proves how big the first game was for LSU, and how well LSU would have been set up to win it all if they could have pulled that one out. The opportunity to play NC State in the second round without facing Rodon, and then to be in the position where LSU would have to be beaten twice was a beautiful scenario. It certainly was for UCLA.
I don't mean to imply that UCLA is not deserving. While many people are not pleased to see a team win it all with as meek of an offense as UCLA, look away from their offense to notice what happened. UCLA had three things go their way.
First, they had the most CWS experience in a year where most of the teams did not reach the CWS last year. The Bruins have been there 3 of the last 4 years. This year's field was full of teams that hadn't been there in a while or hardly at all. The Bruins had the determination and belief in each other and their system of play.
Second, the Bruins had an unbelievable run of great pitching and defense. They allowed just 7 runs in their last 8 games (only more than one run in one of those games). That is AMAZING no matter what bats or in what park.
Third, UCLA had a ton of baseball fortune go their way. It is hard to survive by living off other teams mistakes and only getting hits in those timely instances when those mistakes occur. As good as their pitching and defense were, you have to have baseball fortune for those deep fly balls to not find gaps even if they do stay in the park. Furthermore, all your opponent needs is a "seeing eye single" or a "bloop" over the shortstop to fall when runners are in scoring position and you hold a 2-1 lead in the ninth. Yet, those things did not happen to the Bruins, and they are the champs.
I would encourage LSU and college baseball fans to chill out a bit about the lack of offense. I agree college baseball needs a little more offense and late game scoring. As for this year, the opportunity was there for a lot of teams, but this year UCLA had the magic.
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie,
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
The BIG news coming out of the sporting world is UCLA took home the gold at the 2013 College World Series in Omaha. As much as I dislike California teams I just can’t image any other team that deserved to win its first ever World Series title than the Bruins. It’s as simple as 1,2,3 in that from the first “batter-up” in game one while taking on a favored LSU Tiger team to the final out of last night’s game two they played the most consistent, all around, mistake free baseball I’ve seen in many years.
They weren’t dominate as we’d been accustomed to seeing from SEC teams by no stretch of the imagination but they maintained control and handled the pressure you’d come to expect from other teams that have won a few rings before. After LSU played their worst baseball of the season and was ousted before we could warm up our seats I became a Bulldog fan (just for this two week stretch).
If the Tigers weren’t going to hoist another trophy then the next best thing was having a fellow South Eastern Conference program celebrating the dominance that has become SEC Baseball. Or at least that’s what kept me tuning in night after night. To the victor goes the spoils and no doubt having to admit that a left coast team will be doing all the bragging until we return next year is just about all this writer can take.
O. K., I’ve received a few calls asking my opinion of New England’s Aaron Hernandez’s arrest on murder charges. To no one’s surprise I’ve answered just the way expected and that is “I’m not surprised, not one bit”. Today’s athletes aren’t anything special. This writer has time after time said there are no heroes in professional sports anymore. Most are spoiled little brats that think their sh*t doesn’t stink.
Just cause these guys wipe their asses with $100.00 bills (that the fans have dumped into their collective laps) doesn’t mean their sh*t doesn’t stink. I can guarantee you one thing, IT DOES! Just to show everyone that I know what I’m talking about, I looked up the definition of “HERO” and here it is straight out of the book; “A man who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits. Noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, a man noted for his special achievements”.
So, when we start putting the stamp of HERO on a guy(s) that believes he too can walk on water we better start looking very close at that individual. And before anybody in Baton Rouge starts pointing fingers remember this, the starting quarterback at LSU is a self-admitted sex offender. He was booted from the first SEC school he played for, Georgia, but was then RECRUITTED to come here and play because the Tigers needed an established player to take over from Jordan Jefferson.
The things we close our collective eyes to just so we can land a player that can throw a football 50 yards downfield or a guy that can haul one in while going across the middle or one that can stop a runner cold in his tracks is just ludicrous! So, please don’t expect me to say “I’m shocked” because I ain’t, not at all. Today’s world, no matter what sector you look at, has murderers in it. It has child molesters in it. It has rapist in it. It has drug abusers in it. It has racists in it.
Let me be more specific, O. J. Simpson (Murder), Kobe Bryant (Rape), Jerry Sandusky (Child Molestation), Barry Bonds and Lance Armstrong (Drugs addicts), Serena Williams (Racist) and Michael Jackson. Although NEVER being convicted Michael makes the list simply because of two things; he lived in California which doesn’t force minors to testify and a “donation” of some $20 MILLION dollars to a special fund for his “victims”.
So, please don’t anyone shake your heads at the news coming from the North East. No, it’s just another very sad day in modern America. A country that tags all its professional athletes HEROS at any cost!!!
Till next week… …
