ESPN loves for their "experts" to play "buy or sell." My turn this week with the Saints and LSU baseball.
The Saints picking who they hope is Drew Brees' heir apparent.
SELL: Everyone points to this being the Aaron Rodgers plan. Here is my problem with the plan. Aaron Rodgers was arguably the best quarterback in that draft that year and slid to the end of the first round. Maybe the Saints had that high of a grade of Grayson, but they would be out of the box on that thinking.
The Saints are good at wide receiver and tight end, and that was not a position of need in the draft.
BUY: I fully expected the Saints to select a tight end and receiver because that is what history has shown us, and that is what all the reports implied. But, as long as the Saints are good with Jones, Coleman, Toon, and Morgan then I am as well. I trust their talent evaluation on offense.
At tight end, Payton was telling the truth when he said he likes Josh Hill. My guess is they just didn't see much in the other prospects.
Picking Peat at 13 to possibly sit on the bench.
SELL: I dislike the idea of picking anyone at 13 overall with the vision of the player sitting on the bench. The 13th pick needs to play, and I think Peat will somehow. The only way I am okay with him sitting at the start of the year is if Lelito is better than anyone expects at guard. Otherwise, the goal is to get the best 5 offensive lineman on the field, and Peat better be in that top 5 or it was a bad pick.
Trading up to get Swann.
SELL: The only reason I sell this one is I have lost faith in the Saints evaluation of cornerbacks. When was the last time the Saints picked a corner that made a serious contribution to the team? Tracy Porter in 2008, and the Saints have picked Robinson, Patrick, White, and Baptiste since. Not too good.
Consequently, I don't like trading a pick just to get Swann after already picking PJ Williams at corner. That being said, I would be happy if just one of the two turns into a solid player.
Drafting three linebackers. Two pass rushers that are "tweeners."
BUY: We all know you have got to be able to rush the passer in the NFL. I have been on my high horse for a couple of years saying defense under 2 minutes in each half is as much a factor as winning as any other. If either Tull or Kikaha turn into pass rushing maniacs that improve the Saints defense at the end of a game, then they were great picks.
As for Anthony, the Saints have needed a play maker at linebacker. He and Peat have to makes serious contributions this year for this to be considered a successful draft. Anthony has to for no other reason than he is who we picked in exchange for Jimmy Graham. Unger on his own does not make it a good trade. But Unger and Anthony as quality starters next year does make the trade a success.
Moving on to LSU baseball.
The weakness of the LSU baseball is their bull pen.
SELL: The weakness is the pitching staff (keep in mind this is all under the perspective of a #1 ranked team). At this point of the year, the starting pitching is a little below where it was last year. Poche is a full notch below Nola (as almost any pitcher would be). Lange is similar to Poche of last year. The coaches are searching for a third starter just like last year. The depth of the bullpen is actually slightly stronger than last year as evidence by the long extra inning games. But Broussard was a great closer last year and the Tiger do not have one this year.
I was holding out hope for Jake Latz being late season spark, but he is now out for the year. At this point, Mainieri and Dunn will need to hope a few guys have the light come on and make great strides. If that does not happen, the pressure will be on Mainieri and Dunn to guess right every time they go to the pen on who to bring in to create the right matchup. Guess wrong and the Houston series of last year will be the result.
There is nothing to worry about with Alex Lange.
SELL: His strikeout to walk ratio is basically 1:1 the last few starts after being 4:1. His velocity is down, and he is giving up more runs. He is just a freshman and hopefully this is just a lull. Still, just like it would have been unrealistic to think he would pitch the way he did at the start of the SEC season in every start, you aren't being honest if you doubt that Lange can regain that form.
LSU can win it all with just two dominant starters.
BUY: LSU did it in '08 with a great lineup. But the starters have to be dominant. If Lange bounces back as many suspect, then LSU is one of the best teams in the country. If not, LSU may be ranked as the top team because of what they did when Poche and Lange were at top form in the beginning of SEC play. But, they are not a serious contender in Omaha.
Considering the lack of a third starter, LSU needs to be able to win a Super Regional in two games. They do not want to go to a game three. In Omaha, they would have to stay in the winners bracket.
Similar to '08 and the A&M series this year, the offense must carry the team against the top teams. No matter what happens, this has been another wonderful season. Pretty amazing considering the loss of Marshall and Latz. Hopefully, the Tigers can find some magic down the stretch.

Well, well, my oh my! The NFL has spent a few million dollars and many hours investigating the so called “deflategate” and put it all in a pretty 243 page report that tells us exactly what we all knew. Not many people I know live under rocks these days so I assume you know what I’m talking about. But just in case somebody you know does and isn’t up to speed on this issue just simply say “A super star NFL quarterback and 4 time Super Bowl winner in all actuality has lied to the public but we just can’t prove it”.
In the report released Wednesday the NFL states Brady “probably knew that the balls he was using in the AFC Championship game against Indianapolis were not legal”. The league though used tact in saying Brady’s claims of being unaware of the deflated balls “IMPLAUSIBLE”. The rational is simple, a player of his expertise and knowledge of how a legally inflated NFL football feels is beyond question.
The league has refused to call Brady what he is in this case so I will do it for them, “BRADY IS A LIAR”! The rules call for the balls to be inflated no more than 13.5 lbs. and a minimum of 12.5 pounds of pressure. Ted Wells hired by the NFL to investigate and report his findings came close to calling Brady a liar when he wrote in his final report that Brady “was at least generally aware” and “we found these claims (of not knowing the balls were not legal) not plausible and contradicted by other evidence”… …
Simply put he (Brady) knew the balls didn’t meet specs and that it was “more probable than not” that New England’s locker room attendant Jim McNally and equipment assistant John Jastremski executed the plan. McNally’s reward came in the shape of expensive shoes, signed footballs, jerseys and good ‘ole American greenbacks; COLD CASH!
The two New England locker room employees sent a number of texts between them in which they attack Brady as being a “Hard to please taskmaster”. One message ended with a wonderful “FU** Tom” because as things go in these situations the STAR gets his way and if you don’t like it then you can kiss your job goodbye. And in the Patriot’s world what Mr. Brady wants; Mr. Brady gets.
The NFL is still deliberating what penalties to impose and left only a three word reply (when asked just what punishment the league was going to impose); “To be determined”. Simple and sweat but there has to be something done when a player, coach and even when an organization doesn’t play by the rules and is caught breaking the rules set forth and which everyone is to follow.
If Coach Bill Belichick were half the man that Saints head coach Sean Peyton is he’ll man-up and admit his involvement and sit out a year. That is of course if Belichick were half the man Peyton is but he’s not. This isn’t the first time he’s been caught with his “finger in the cookie jar”. No, Mr. Bill always has an excuse and flatly denies ever bending much less breaking any rule.
Mr. Owner, Robert Kraft, step up, be a man, take the punishment, admit your team did in fact deflate the balls in an attempt to gain an advantage. But where I’m most angered is the fact the officials working the game didn’t stop the use of the deflated balls. The crew of officials is responsible for putting every ball into the game. In fact the umpire is charged with making all decisions as to the legality of player equipment and balls used.
The fact the crew did nothing when they found balls subject says a lot to me. This league has done so much to take away any hint of the official’s duties in games it only serves then that now everybody has “egg on their collective faces”. It’s almost like going out to work a game and then having the NFL tell its officials to check their balls at the gate and I’m not talking about the ones being inflated to at least 13.5 lbs. of pressure.
It serves the league right for castrating its officials and keeping them from being able to enforce the rules…
Till next week…
