THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Here we go Tiger fans. Is LSU ready to make the next step and really be a contender on the national stage? What can we watch for against Georgia Southern to get a hint as to whether the Tigers will take that step?

To make it on the stage, there has to be depth along the defensive line. Can guys along the defensive line in the second group make plays?

Is the offense able to make big play without trying? With Beckham and Landry, going back to the days of Clayton and Henderson, LSU would make big plays on offense from the receiver position on “normal” plays. We have seen it recently from running backs like Fournette and Guice, but not the receivers. Last year we rarely saw that ability from any skill players.

I don’t care how good Ensminger or Brady is scheming up plays. On the national stage, players like Early Doucet, Keiland Williams, and others made people miss and made big plays. Will Chase, Emery, Marshall, Jefferson, Sullivan, and others do the same? If they are going to do it against Texas, Auburn, Florida, and Alabama, then they should do it time and again against Georgia Southern. I look forward to seeing what happens.

I don’t have much to say on a week of games that has very few quality matchups, but I have to take a moment to look at Auburn and Oregon. If I were a Pac 12 fan, I would be embarrassed by the fact that Auburn is favored over Oregon while starting a freshman quarterback. Oregon is considered the best in the Pac 12 this year and Auburn is maybe the 5th best team in the SEC. Oregon should be favored by 5 points and they are a 3 point underdog. If Oregon doesn’t beat Auburn, Oregon and the Pac 12 should no longer be considered a Power 5 conference (I am only slightly joking).

I will watch the Saints last playoff game, but only out of fan obligation. There won’t be anything that happens in that game that we will lead us to some important revelation.

After the game, many people will react to the 53 man roster, but we should keep a few things in mind. First, the Saints are one of the more active teams in tweaking their roster over the course of a season. Second, with injuries come many changes to the roster over the course of a season.

In reality, we should be paying attention to around 70 players. The 53 that make the roster, those who make the practice squad, and then the unknowns. The unknowns are the ones who are good enough to make an NFL roster, but some teams have depth at that position and have to cut someone for roster space or salary cap reasons. The Saints are always looking for unknowns to impact their roster.

Unfortunately, the Saints are looking for unknowns in the same positions where there is a lack of quality players across the league. The Saints are looking for pass rushers, offensive tackles, and a third running back.

I like Washington at running back. He runs hard and has been great on special teams, but doesn’t catch the ball well. Ozigbo is a nice undrafted free agent and has been solid on special teams as well, but he has been loose with the ball. If Kamara and Murray stay healthy, it won’t matter. Odds are, one of them will miss some time, and I am pretty certain the Saints will be looking to upgrade in this area.

Hopefully, the backup tackle is not on the team or the Saints don’t end up needing a backup tackle. It has been ugly this preseason at that spot, and I fully expect the Saints to make a move if they can find someone reliable.

I still don’t like what I am seeing from the receivers below Thomas and Ginn on the depth chart. I know the Saints are counting on Cook and Kamara being the actual 3rd and 4th receivers. I don’t expect the Saints to make a move here though.

Smith has been a disappointment. Kirkwood looks good in comparison to unproductive players. Carr supposedly is developing a relationship with Drew, but we can’t see that because Drew doesn’t play. I expect the Saints to take a chance on some rookies, though. Harris has to make the team as the kick returner. I could see Butler beating out Smith.

I know Hendrickson has gotten attention for having a good camp, but that has been against backup tackles that have been worn out by every opponent in the preseason. Teams always have room for quality pass rushers, but I have to think the Saints are going to be taking a very close look. I would even think defensive end and offensive tackle would be areas where the Saints would be considering a trade. The Saints do have some salary cap room.

I am confident the Saints will pull a few surprises, and the good news is that all of it is about to reveal itself on the field.

HEY REF

If ever there was a poll that just can’t be believed and should be investigated is the one published by the NCAA with the headline that states “that a majority of fans don’t favor paying athletes”. While I find this statement untrue I just had to stop everything I was doing to read for myself what information was disclosed in this so called poll of sport’s fans?

The whole article was very short but what I found “funny” was nowhere in it did it give out the numbers of fans questioned, their ages, demographics, etc., etc., etc. And it never released any details on the so called anti pay for the student-athletes. Well, that term went the way of T-Rex, there ain’t no such thing around anymore. They should be referred to as to what they actually are and that is “university employees”.

If you’ve read this column on any regularity you’ll know this writer’s stance on paying “employees”. From now on I’ll never write student-athlete since they are extinct. Getting back to the poll results it shows that 67 percent, up 12 points (I guess they mean percent) actually believe that universities break NCAA rules.

The increase it is thought stems from two highly publicized cases; Harvard and Miami. In the Harvard case which sounds just too funny to be true but they report the school issued academic sanctions against approximately 60 students for a cheating scandal on the final exam in a class on of all things: CONGRESS!

Now come on, this has to be made up. Maybe the students started studying the way our Congress works and decided stealing, lying and cheating is the way to get what you want. Not what you earn but what you want and isn’t that the way not only our lawmakers are perceived but how the vast majority get ahead?

Oh, sure, I can hear it now, how can I write something like that. Let me just put a couple names out there you might recognizes; Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Lance Armstrong. All three swore on the Bible they didn’t do drugs, didn’t lie, didn’t steal but all are liars. Armstrong was proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law. The court of common sense decided the case of the other two athletes.

But the article didn’t say anything about the Miami case and I find that odd since the Hurricanes are known for going way outside the lines of the law and the rules. I guess maybe they didn’t have room for “old” news? So, as I finished the short column not a single word on the so called vote on not paying employees.

I mean the whole reason for a headline is to get the reader to notice something they may want to read about. As in my case, I just wanted to see how many ignorant people there were that answered “no” to this question. In this day and time it really shouldn’t surprise me, I mean the working people of this country can’t stand to see another worker to get ahead. Big business was very successful in their “Divide and conquer” war against those that have to punch a clock to make a living.

The NCAA is rewarded in BILLIONS of dollars by keeping the vast majority of the money that is generated by all the “FREE LABOR” these men and women generate. But let me ask a simple question “Why are they called student athletes in the first place? The scam run by both the NCAA and the “tax free” non-profit NFL is downright absurd. Most of the players working on the football field are from poor families and neither employer educates their employees the mundane task of balancing a checkbook.

Don’t start about all the sports that never make a profit and are supported by basketball and football. The ONLY and I do mean ONLY reason those sports are still on the books is because so many students still play those sports and the families of these kids are the reason Deans keep footing the bills. Mom and Dad still have some clout or maybe I should say “You don’t bite the hand that feeds you” so it’s sort of a tradeoff.

But to not pay the employees that generate BILLIONS of dollars is not right, never will be right and should be abolished ASAP if not sooner. Pay those that make it all possible! For those universities that think they can generate these sums of dollars on their own without these young EMPLOYEES all I can say is go ahead and try. And every one of them that believe they can make it without paying their athletes all I can say is this; they’re be extinct along with the dinosaurs!!

Till next week… …
