AFTER HOURS

Late-Night Musings From A Former LSU Beat Writer

By Carl Dubois, Sports Editor, (McMinnville, Oregon) News-Register

THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY, Ore. — The University of New Orleans athletic department keeps hanging in there, and I love it. Reading a report Wednesday about UNO’s plan to join the Southland Conference in 2013-14 and remain in Division I made me smile, especially after remembering what it’s been like for the Privateers since Hurricane Katrina. I remember covering an LSU baseball game at UNO in 2006 and, looking out over the ballpark and in the direction of Lake Ponchartrain, seeing countless FEMA trailers all over the campus. The program’s drop to Division III seemed inevitable, an understandable surrender to overwhelming circumstances. Now, a retooling Southland Conference plans to welcome UNO, with Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word also coming aboard. I think it’s great news, and I look forward to perhaps one day seeing another Division I baseball game with N’Awlins uniforms.

The Southland Conference isn’t the only thing undergoing a makeover. LSU’s Tiger Stadium has new lighting, a cleaned-up façade and some other improvements, including a championship plaza similar to the one at Alex Box Stadium. The window replacement, which was an early part of the refurbishing, makes the place sparkle in ways it did not before, even if it robbed it of some of the faded-newspaper-clipping charm of the time-worn color of the exterior. It’s all good, it seems, and in case someone driving up Nicholson Drive has a hard time figuring out what that big structure is looming ahead, 10-foot-high, illuminated letters spelling out Tiger Stadium will make it clear. These changes are good ones, and I’d like to see them in person one day.

Tyrann Mathieu’s stay at a Houston rehab facility has made headlines and drawn praise and criticism. Whatever the young man needs to do to get his life in order, it’s up to him to do it, and seeking help is a good sign. John Lucas has a good reputation in these matters after battling his own addictions, and he’s high-profile enough to have appeared on Mathieu’s radar. Whatever has affected his behavior and his ability to be a rule-abiding member of a team, it’s great Mathieu is trying to deal with it head-on. His story is well-chronicled, and whatever one might think of the specifics of a possible addiction or other chemical crutches, everyone should have the chance to prevail over his (or her) demons and have a fresh start in life. Good for him. I wish him the best.

Finally, I don’t see a makeover of any significance occurring for the Houston Astros, the Major League Baseball team of my youth. Becoming the first National League team since the Cleveland Spiders in 1899 to lose 34 of 38 games was bad enough, but the Astros will have a chance to do it again next season in the American League, as I see it. Oh, and as for Roger Clemens? I’m lukewarm on the topic, but I do want a Sugar Land Skeeters cap.

See you next week.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

There has been tons of analysis concerning the impact of losing Tyrann Matthieu. Most of the analysis has been concerning the positions Matthieu played, and who will replace Matthieu.

The facts are pretty obvious. LSU has quality athletes to play those positions. Those players might do a great job, but they haven’t made many plays before (mostly due to being freshman). The best LSU can hope for is those positions don’t turn into weaknesses on the team. The worst thing that could happen is any of them get hurt as LSU has now lost a staggering 5 cornerbacks off last year’s roster (and only one was expected).

While all of that is rather obvious, the less obvious and more important question is the overall impact on the team regarding wins and losses. I have no idea how the LSU coaching staff envisioned this year’s team as compared to last year. Nevertheless, if they hadn’t planned on changing much, I certainly hope they have some new ideas now.

I would be the most amazed person in the country if LSU is able to go undefeated again this year following the exact same formula. For the record, I am not referring to being a run-oriented, defensive team.

The fact is that LSU won last year, and won big, without doing things that most everyone has to do. The only thing LSU did on offense to “trick” their opponent was the occasional play action on first down. Last year, LSU waited for the defense or special teams to set up the offense, and the offense either plowed forward like a tank or tried to hold the ball until the shot clock ran out depending on the half. Let’s face it, Brad Wing was the 3rd most effective offensive weapon LSU had last year.

I certainly hope the defense and special teams are as good as last year, but don’t forget how amazing they were last year. The punt team gave up around 20 total return yards all season!

The talent is certainly there to make plays in all three phases of the game, and that is the type of team I expect this year. Instead of the defense and special teams accounting for 75% of the highlights I expect more of a 50-50 balance. Not because Mettenberger can throw downfield, but because I expect him to be able to throw the ball on time, to the right person, and in the right spot so that player can make plays in space. Just doing those things will allow for the offense to be as efficient and make more big plays.

Again, for all I know, Coach Miles was already planning on taking more chances this year. Either way, I am hoping the sum of LSU’s considerable talent will make for a dynamic team in all three phases of the game even without Matthieu. If that happens, I don’t see why LSU can’t go undefeated again… despite the fact the BCS National Championship Game is not in New Orleans.

DENNIS DEARIE AND HEY REF ARE ON LEAVE. WE LOOK FORWARD TO DENNIS’ COLUMN RETURNING IN THE FUTURE.
