JACKET IMMORTALITY

The Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the nomination window for the next class of inductees. Nominations for the Class of 2024 will be accepted from February 1 through March 31.

The annual induction banquet for the Class of 2024 will be held on September 5, 2024, at Forrest Grove Plantation in Denham Springs. In addition to being honored at the banquet, inductees will also be presented to the public the following night, September 6, at halftime of the DSHS-Hammond football game in Yellow Jacket Stadium. (Extraordinary events could affect the halftime presentation game date). This will be the fourteenth year the Denham Springs Athletic Association and DSHS have co-hosted this popular event. Thus far, 93 former Yellow Jacket greats have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Readers are reminded that the Hall of Fame Selection Committee does not nominate the candidates. This important function is left to the public. Any person with an interest in DSHS sports may submit a nomination; however, individuals may not nominate themselves. All nominations must conform to the Hall of Fame Nomination Guidelines available to the public by visiting the DSHS website at www.denhamspringshs.org or by picking up a copy at the school office.

When preparing a nomination, the most critical requirement is to provide documentation that substantiates claims of athletic, academic, and civic achievement. Such verification typically comes from newspaper articles, copies of yearbook pages, old scrapbooks, family archives, etc.

Nominators are advised to start early in the process of collecting documentation to afford nominees the best chance of selection. Unsubstantiated claims cannot be considered by the Selection Committee. Please refer to the Hall of Fame Nomination Guidelines for recommendations on which area newspapers and libraries to contact.

Nominations cannot be accepted by email or fax. Because guidelines require

an 8 X 10 photograph of the candidate, nominations must be mailed or hand-delivered to Denham Springs High School, ATTN: Principal (HOF), 1000 N. Range Avenue, Denham Springs, LA 70726. Submissions must be postmarked or hand-delivered no later than March 31 to be considered for induction this year.

Once all nominations are received and screened for completeness, the Selection Committee will meet to review the submissions and vote on candidates for induction this fall. Nominees who are not selected will remain active candidates and be voted on annually for a period of five years. If additional documentation becomes available that will strengthen their file, it should be submitted to the address noted above.

The Hall of Fame serves as a symbol of appreciation to the Athletes, Coaches, and Supporters whose outstanding contributions meet the criteria for selection in one of these three categories. Male and female athletes will be representative of all varsity sports. Nominees, both living and deceased, will be considered from all eras of DSHS athletics to the extent possible.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

We call it the coaching carousel, but this feels a lot more like a coaching extreme roller coaster year.

In the NFL, coaches do not last in one location for long. The Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick eras were legendary and for them to end within hours of each other is incredible.

It amazes me how teams are so quick to change coaches, yet half the teams will likely recycle through a head coach that was just fired somewhere else.

In college football, the domino effect of Nick Saban retiring means that half of the teams that were in the four team playoff now have a new coach, Washington and Alabama. Two months ago, Texas A&M was making the biggest splash by firing and buying out Jimbo Fisher for 75 million. Nobody is even thinking of Texas A&M right now.

Meanwhile, we might not be done. Jim Harbaugh could leave Michigan and that would mean 3 of the 4 playoff teams would be changing head coach. If Harbaugh does leave, it will mean the only head coaches with a national championship will be Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney, and Mack Brown. And, the current rumor is that Mack Brown may retire.

In an era of NIL, major conference realignment, and an expanding playoff college, the college football news cycle is non stop.

Locally, there have been strong rumors that Brian Kelly could leave LSU for Michigan if that job comes open.

As an LSU/Saints fan who is always waiting for the bad news to drop, I can’t imagine anything more fitting. Right when Saban showed us the true potential of LSU’s football program he left for the NFL and then returned to show us Alabama’s true potential stifling LSU. Now he finally retires, leaving a huge open door.

Meanwhile, LSU seems to have things rolling. Brian Kelly has solidified the roster, adjusted to the SEC and Louisiana, and looks to be building a defensive coaching staff that can recruit and develop the top talent in the country like the offensive staff has done.

I am extremely excited about the hiring of Bo Davis for the defensive line. In the time period when LSU could barely cross the 50 yard line against Alabama the Tide had a defensive line room that went 9 deep with NFL players and Coach Davis was the one leading that room. Contrary to popular belief, not all of those players were considered automatic NFL players when they arrived in Tuscaloosa.

As fun as football has come with the creativity and variety of offensive schemes, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, and others continue to show that the game will always be controlled by the offensive and defensive lines. LSU now has two of the best in the country leading those groups in Bo Davis and Brad Davis. Both are incredible recruiters and skill developers. Brad Davis is from Baton Rouge and Bo Davis played at LSU. Pretty remarkable.

With all this excitement, naturally, that progress is all about to implode as Brian Kelly is going to take over at Michigan when Harbaugh leaves. Right? Like a roller coaster, I guess we need to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
