Festivus season is over (if you are not a Seinfeld fan, google it), but I never had my "airing of grievances." I will try to keep it light, but there are a few things that happened in the last week that have "got my goat."
Let's start with my new favorite team to hate, the Seahawks. I will start by saying how pleased I was with the result of the Super Bowl. If I could have changed one aspect, it would have been that the mistake at the end would have been made by anyone other than Russell Wilson, who I think is a tremendous player and leader. As a matter of fact, I think if you put Wilson on the Rams that they would have been a Super Bowl contender.
Last week, I pointed out how easily Marshawn Lynch could just say something of value to the media. Then I read some of what Michael Bennett and Richard Sherman said about the NCAA, and I have changed my mind. The whole team is better off just shutting up.
For those that missed it, both players railed on the NCAA for not taking care of athletes. While I have no interest in defending the NCAA, I have a strong interest in countering the ridiculous ignorance both players demonstrated in regards to "regular" college students.
Sherman claims that student athletes have it tougher because they can't schedule classes whenever they want and go hang out with friends using the rest of the day to study. How clueless can one individual be about college life? Maybe he didn't really experience college because he just stayed in the 5 star luxurious football facilities at Stanford.
I think the rest of the world realizes that many college students work part or full time jobs while they go to college to help pay off the student loans they will still be paying for at least 10 years after they graduate. Those students don't get free teachers, free clothes, free medical care, free travel around the country, or significant connections to wealthy business people for after college. Yes, the university makes money off of athlete jersey sales. Let's not use that as an excuse to diminish what the average student experiences.
Meanwhile Bennett chose to attack the medical care athletes receive. "Guys break their legs and they get the worst surgery they could possibly get by the worst doctors with the worst treatment." Let this be a quote used by every college recruiting against Texas A&M. Bennett may not like the status of health care in this country, but I guarantee you the quality of health care for college athletes is above the normal care received by the rest of society (I received it as a student manager at LSU and I promise you I have no complaints). Not to mention, the athlete does not have premiums, co-pays or any of that other stuff to worry about.
I understand the physical cost of playing athletics in college. I agree the long term care can be improved. Still, Bennett is complaining about the one aspect of athlete health care that is done well.
Then again, what else should we expect from the Seahawks. They showed at the end of the Super Bowl why they may win a Super Bowl, but they aren't real champions. I am more thankful now than ever for how the Saints represented New Orleans and the state in the process of winning a Super Bowl.
Michael Butler of the Patriots showed the Seahawks how it is possible to compete at the highest level and still have character. During his post game interviews he didn't talk down the abilities of the other team or talk up his greatness. He didn't criticize the other organizations for not picking him. He showed humility and appreciation within the moment despite making an incredible play at the goal line. The strange play call should not let us lose sight of the great play that he made. Pick plays at the goal line work 95% of the time. He made a tremendous play and handled the moment as a true professional.
Can you imagine changing the NCAA selection process for the Big Dance three weeks before the end of the season? Well that is what the LHSAA just did. You probably missed the news because everyone is focused on the private/public split.
You might be thinking right now that "my goat" has "been got" as much as it could for this week. But that is where you would be wrong.
The LHSAA Annual Conference received a whole bunch of attention for the public/private debate last week. In the meantime, they principals made a decision that I believe to be flat wrong. They passed a proposal to change the playoff formula for basketball power ratings.
I don't like the change in formula mostly because it does not give credit to the second place finisher in district. I believe district games should have added weight, and now only the district champion receives a benefit. Certainly, I respect someone who has a different opinion.
Regardless, I am upset for a different reason. I am upset because the change took place "effective immediately." As a result, basketball coaches scheduled games, and teams have played for 2 months under one formula, and with three weeks left in the season, the formula has been changed. That is wrong.
If you have read this column for some time, my statement should not come as a surprise. For years, I have defended whatever system has been in place for college football as fair. My defense has been that everyone knew the rules when the season began.
In the case of the LHSAA, the opposite has happened. Everyone knew the rules, planned for one system, and now the system has changed.
I would understand if a rule change was put into immediate effect if it was to close a loophole, clarify an ambiguous statement, or correct an egregious error. None of those scenarios are in place in this situation.
If you cannot understand my feelings, imagine you are a car salesperson. Your end of the year incentive is based on the number cars you sale. Then, with three weeks left in the year, the company changes to where the incentive is based on the worth of each car sold.
I think in both cases, the decision makers have done a disservice to those in the field. In the words of ESPN's Monday Night Countdown personalities, and in the nicest way I can say how I feel, "C'mon Man!"

There’s no doubting that this Super Bowl had everything that is the NFL and is my vote for the G. O. A. T. award. (Greatest of All Time) If this game didn’t excite and/or entertain you then by all means you need to start looking somewhere else for your brand of entertainment.
I was asked if the ending of the game shocked me and of course I had to tell the truth and say “NO”! But before I explain my answer let’s get to what most of us already know and a surprise or two you may not be aware of.
Tom Brady’s selection as MVP did disappoint me because he wasn’t my choice for the award. Sure he was perfect in the 4th quarter and stood tall in leading his team to the win. That’s what he’s known for and we all expected him to do that. But as I watched the game there was only one person on New England’s Super Bowl roster that played a flawless four quarters of football. If I had a vote the player walking away with the trophy would’ve been none other than wide receiver Julian Edelman.
Edelman had nine catches for 109 yards and caught the winning touchdown. That translates to an average of 12.1 yards but mostly his play in the final minutes made it possible for New England to collect their 4th tittle. I thing Brady’s getting the nod over Edelman was one of those that was made to add to the record books.
All the talk has been about the final pass that was intercepted in the endzone by Malcolm Butler. But before I go there we must first mention the guys that stopped Marshawn Lynch inside the one yard line the previous play. #96 Sealver Siliga, #54 Akeem Ayers and #23 Patrick Chung were able to bring down Mr. Unstoppable just shy of the goal line.
On that play Seattle had their “run” offense on the field and Butler wasn’t in the game. Then they substituted with three wide receivers and an alert coaching staff noticed it and rushed Butler back in the game. The rest of course is Super Bowl history and many will vote this ending as probably the greatest ending of all time for a Championship game but I have to disagree.
The way Seattle showed their total lack of class in the final twenty seconds has left a huge stain on not only this game but the entire league. The NFL has been transformed into a league of thugs, murders and women beaters. Seattle needs to suspend #51 Michael Bennett or at least fine him for his deployable actions in the final 20 seconds of this game.
The last bit of business for the NFL to do is to issue checks to the teams. And they aren’t too shabby as the Seahawk players will each get a cool $49,000.00 while each of the Patriot’s players collects a mere $97,000.00!!!! That is in addition to $44,000 for conference championship games and divisional games payout a poultry sum of just $24,000…
It was a great game for the fans but an embarrassment for the players at the end. You’d think these so called professionals would act like professionals. But half of them don’t dress the part so I guess we shouldn’t expect them to act the way a professional should act!
Till next week…
