THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

I really want to write about the Pelicans, but their post season fate will be sealed after my deadline and before you read this article. So I need to write this article in a manner that covers both bases.

Whether the Pelicans make it in the playoffs or not, they really have nobody to blame but themselves. They lost to the Knicks AND the Sixers who have a combined 35 wins. I know it is a long season, but when you lose games like those, you deserve whatever fate you get.

At the same time, if it wasn't for bad luck, the Pels would have no luck at all. Forget the injuries, because those happen to every team in every sport. The Thunder have had to overcome Ibaka and Durant being out. No I am referring to the scenario of this past week.

I respect the NBA having a policy that allows the league to reverse technical fouls. But for Russell Westbrook to have TWO technical fouls reversed after the fact in the course of a week whenever either one would have led to a game suspension is pretty fortunate for the Thunder. I don't have the details to know if the NBA made the right decision, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say they made the correct decision. Then doesn't that mean NBA officials have a significant issue regarding their decision making regards to technical fouls?

Not only did Westbrook get to play against the Blazers, but he was able to play against the Blazers who sat their best player in LaMarcus Aldridge in a game that was meaningless to the Blazers. Meanwhile, the Pels played at Portland last week in a game that the Blazers wanted to win with a healthy Aldridge. Finally, the Pels close the season against the dynasty team of this era in a game the Spurs really want to win.

Which brings me full circle. The Pelicans have nobody to blame but themselves. Recently, they drafted Russ Smith, Jeff Whithey, and Patrick Young. None of them have helped the team at all. As a result, the Pelicans had no depth for the first half of the year until they traded for some veterans who have been catalysts with their effort, defensive presence, and execution. A great example is Quincy Pondexter who the Pels drafted and moved him along as a draft bust, only to trade for him this year and have him become a starter.

You are either reading this article with the perspective that the Pelicans overcame injuries, the toughest division in the NBA, and other challenges to squeak in the playoffs. Or you have to be thinking the Pels got what the deserved losing out on the last night of the season. Either way, they made the jump to the top half of the Western Conference, which means they are one of the best 11-13 teams in the league.

I believe they made that jump by increasing the quality of the bench players 6-12, and of course the great play of Anthony Davis. In order to make the next step, the first five must elevate their game around Anthony Davis. Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holliday, and Ryan Anderson have to avoid the deep valleys they have shown in their play. Here's hoping they will have the opportunity to improve their consistency in the playoffs this year.

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie

Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

O. K., its official “Political Correctness” has arrived in professional football. “PC” is alive and well as the NFL announced last week that it has hired its first full time female official; Sarah Thomas. I’ve tried my best to ignore the on-going circus which many call the National Football League. She will be the first female to work full time regular season, non-strike games in the 95 year history of the league.

Seems there just aren’t many “barriers” left to break. And fewer and fewer doors to kick in so to speak but why aren’t we being given the complete story? Since we are talking “Political Correctness” and this is “HEY REF”, the home of the complete story, I’ll lead the way in announcing that Ms. Thomas is the FIRST CAUCASION FEMALE to be hired on a full time basis by the NFL.

Why hasn’t a single news source, sport’s talk show or even the giant in the sport’s TV networks, ESPN included this very important fact? If she’d been brown, black, yellow or green we’d still be reading about it. You wouldn’t be able to view your Direct and/or Dish satellite, wide screen, full HD flat screens without the constant updates of the “FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL OFFICIAL”.

I’ve been asked to answer the question as to whether I think she belongs on a professional field. If I said “Sure, yes she does” then I’d be a liar. My complete answer is this “If there was a place where a woman doesn’t belong it’s on a football field wearing stripes trying to make sure grown men play by the rules”. There I said it, I wrote it and I believe it. She belongs on a professional field just as much as I do on a committee trying to research a better tampon!!!!

But I can understand why the NFL finally agreed to bring her on board. With nothing but bad news following more bad news and in many instances just atrocious behavior by its players and owners the NFL needed something good to be coming from league headquarters. I mean even if they had to do the obscene thing of putting a female in stripes this league is in crisis.

Things continue to get worse for the NFL as we’ve all read and heard of what former New Orleans’ Saints Darren Sharper admitted to in a court of law. Sharper stood in front of a judge and confessed he was guilty of drugging and raping women from Bourbon Street to the Pacific Ocean. Now even though he admitted to horrendous crimes against women and since he was an NFL hero the judge has allowed “special” terms for him.

Under the terms worked out by his defense team, Sharper will be subjected to penis stimulation tests. The test called a penile plethysmograph will gauge arousal by attaching a sensor that will record his responses to sexually graphic images. I believe he’s in all this trouble because he does get aroused by these images and acts out on them by drugging and raping women so why, please tell me again why he needs these tests.

Mark my word, next month when Tampa makes a certain QB from Florida State the overall number one pick and making him an instant multi-millionaire there will soon follow many reports of his sexual behavior during his playing days for the NCAA. Let me go ahead and remind everyone that I don’t point fingers or say “I told you so” BUT… … If ever I hope I’m wrong please let it be this time but I’m afraid we haven’t heard the complete story.

The NCAA is known for turning and looking the other way especially if it’ll cost a few million dollars in revenue and if you need reminding let me just say Cam Newton. With “stars” like Aaron Hernandez (murder), Ray Rice (Physical assault) and way too many drunk driving and drug arrests the NFL needed some good news. How long it lasts is anyone’s guess and this guesser won’t be surprised if the hiring of a white, female official is the lone good news story for this league…

Till next week…
