THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Now THAT was impressive. Look at all the ingredients of the Saints dominating win over Buffalo.

The game was on the road against a winning team that was previously undefeated team at home. The Saints had no explosive plays on offense. The turnover margin was even. The Saints dominated Buffalo as if the Bills were a JV team.

The goal for any team is to improve over the course of the season, and reach the best version of that team at the end of the year. I can’t think of a team in recent history that is a better example of this than the Saints.

How can they improve? They could force a few more turnovers. The offense could find more explosive plays. The punt return team could block someone. Beyond these improvements, there are still two questions.

Can the Saints maintain this level of play? Can the Saints defense stand up against the elite quarterbacks in this league. Matt Ryan is still on the schedule. In the playoffs, Prescott, Wentz, Wilson, and the like will be a tougher challenge than Taylor, Trubisky, and Hundley.

LSU was not as impressive, but that says something. LSU was favored to win by 17 points. LSU won by 23 points. Similar to the Saints game, Arkansas did not do anything to help LSU out. Neither the Bills or the Hogs crumbled like the New York Giants. The Hogs didn’t turn the ball over, they didn’t fall apart on special teams, and they made LSU earn the victory.

It is amazing how quickly LSU fans go from expecting LSU to lose all their games after the Troy loss, to expecting LSU to dominate every game after playing well against Alabama. Tiger fans expectations should be in the middle this year.

BYU is terrible this year, so the opening victory doesn’t mean much. The three game stretch against Miss. State, Syracuse, and Troy is easily explained. State is great at home and Syracuse is good. Troy was a perfect storm. LSU is a different team when Key, Lawrence, and Guice are healthy and playing well which didn’t happen against those three teams.

After the Troy loss, LSU circled the wagons, got healthy, and started to play better. The Tigers are improved, but due to the limitations are quarterback and receiver, are about as good as they are going to be this year.

For two weeks, the discussion has been all about whether LSU should play Myles Brennan over Danny Etling. In all the opinions I have heard, I have yet to hear anyone consider the mentality of the team which is the number one factor. Tiger fans want the team to continue to compete and win, but also develop the quarterback for next year’s opener against Miami. Sorry fans, it doesn’t work that way.

First things first for Coach Orgeron, and that is the 2017 LSU football team. He is asking them to show up for two more weeks and put their tired bodies on the line when they have been doing that since the first week in August. Orgeron and the players are at practice every day. Take Orgeron at his word. If Etling is beaten out, Brennan will play and the players will respect that. If Etling is terrible in a game, the players will respect that. The same ways the players have respected who plays at wide receiver and place kicker.

What they won’t respect is playing a guy, just to get ready for next year. And before you say anything, none of us are at practice or in meeting rooms, so we don’t know who is better right now. Brennan is clearly more talented, but he is a true freshman.

Coach Eaux has control of this years team and has them playing hard. I hope they find a way to play Brennan in the last two games and the bowl game as well. Based off the beginning of the year, I trust that will happen if the situation allows.

One final note, the sample size is very small, but LSU basketball is going to compete and make Tiger fans proud this year.

HEY REF

Before getting to those important things from the sporting world or those I feel deserve a top ranking I first must tell of a story that proves me right. I’ve written time and time again how insane some teams are being handled by those that think they know how to run a professional football team. The only word I can come up with to describe the news coming from Buffalo’s head coach Sean McDermott is INSANE! After the Saints ran Buffalo into submission last Sunday by a score of 47 – 10 it was announced yesterday, November 15th that the Buffalo Bills are benching quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

A quick glimpse at the stats just confirms my disbelief they are going this way with the best QB on their roster. The Saints had a total of 482 yards, 298 of it coming via the ground route for an impressive 20 first downs. This translates to an unbelievable 6.2 yards per run. Their passing game contributed 184 yards as they put up 47 points during the blowout in Buffalo. More impressive stats show they were.500 on third down converting 6 of 12 and a perfect 2 for 2 on 4th down.

The Saints have been on the other side of these types of games and there isn’t a team that hasn’t suffered being totally torn to pieces at times because it’s just the nature of the beast. After looking at these numbers you’d think those responsible for stopping another team’s offense would be in line for a hell of a shakeup. Maybe in one of the other 31 teams but in Buffalo they bench their quarterback because their offense sucked. Please tell me this is a joke because I just can’t make sense of these moves.

Yes, Buffalo definitely had its behind handed to them by the Saints so how can the guy under center be at fault because their defense stayed home and never showed up to play by any stretch of their collective imagination. When I first read about this move I just had to think this was simply more “fake news” but all the outlets that cover the NFL have reported the same insane benching of a guy that had not played a down of defense. Just chalk it up to the blind leading the blind and another example of how NOT to try and win a Super Bowl Title.

So onto what I do best and that is make my loyal readers stop and ask “WHY”. Last week we started the high school football playoffs and as I looked over the brackets of both the select and non-select pairings all I could do was shake my head and think The Advocate is pulling one of those “Candid Camera” episodes.

Aren’t the playoffs in place to crown an eventual champion? Why yes of course I said to myself but something is amiss when you’ve got teams without a single win for the entire year “penciled” in one of the brackets. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at so I looked a little closer and the LHSAA has playoff teams with records of just one or two maybe three wins and they in theory could run a few good quarters together and be in a final come Superdome time.

This just putting together playoff brackets with anybody so the bracket gets filled and those teams with a couple of wins possibly playing for all the marbles is so wrong on many levels. My own personal thinking on football playoffs for any level besides the professional level shouldn’t even be played. But our society demands a champion at all levels of play so my vision of ending a season without playoffs is not what everybody else wants and we’ll continue playing games that mean nothing at the end of the day.

O. K. I hope I didn’t send shockwaves throughout the football world but I still feel kids don’t need extra exposure to injuries by playing more useless contests. I’ve written many times that I do support the split system we have here in Louisiana because the competition between private and public schools many times resulted in scores of 66 – 0 or worse. Adults reliving their childhoods again thru their kids are another reason we don’t need expanding the playoff system.

I was one of those unlucky players that suffered injuries that I’ll never recover from. I’ve had seven or eight knee surgeries and one total knee replacement with the second always hanging over my head. During a game while playing defense I saw the guard that was in front of me at the snap “pull” so I stayed in the gap and when the fullback tried coming my way I had a clean shot at getting him down behind the line.

I just knew there was no way he’d get by me. So as I went to make the tackle the guard that pulled, realized his mistake, and dove right into the side of my left knee. I remember thinking it was New Year’s Eve because of the loud “POW” I’d heard. Unfortunately that sound I heard was a ligament in my knee snapping. So, after all these years seeing how much bigger the players are today and knowing for a fact some coaches teach how to injure another player to get them out of the game just turns my stomach. The game itself is a violent one with young boys and men being injured for life all in the dream of being crowned a champion.

Also in today’s world money rules over everything else and it’s sad to see how that has ruined the game. The lust of making money has infected the game on all levels. But I feel we shouldn’t be sacrificing the health of our children for little plastic trophies or a glass football and so on. I’m still wondering when or if someone would look into the extra monies being made by expanding Louisiana’s football playoffs and did that contribute to the expansion. One day? I won’t hold my breath!

Till next week…
