PRESS RELEASE

THE DRU NETTLES SHOW

Livingston Parish News Publisher Jeff David headlines the guests to appear on This week’s The Dru Nettles Show (Thursday, 6pm—7pm, replay Friday, 10:30am—11:30am, on Cox 4 Television, hosted by Denham Springs Athletics Director/head football coach Dru Nettles and Jon Fine). David will be joined by Zachary Football Coach Neil Weiner, DSHS Senior football player Tyler Curtis and DSHS Art Club President Miranda Lewis. The sponsor of the week is Scott Landry of Edward Jones.

David comes on as part of The Dru Nettles Show feature on Livingston Parish News sportswriters. Although he is not a sportswriter at present, an exception is being made for Jeff since he is believed to be the only Baton Rouge area radio station owner who had a working relationship with Jon Fine that did not end up with Fine being fired. David (and wife Nancy) previously owned Bayou--1210AM on Hatchell Lane. Fine hosted a daily sports talk show on the station.

The Jackets will face Zachary HS this week. Weiner, who once claimed that Fine was his haberdasher, is the Coach of the Broncos. He is the son of Catholic HS coach Dale Weiner. The Jackets faced the Bears earlier this season.

Curtis is a senior football player for the Jackets. His enthusiasm as a great practice player and teammate has been cited by Coach Nettles.

Lewis is a senior at DSHS. She will talk about the various projects in which her club is involved.

Landry makes his second appearance on the show. He represents several people in the Denham Springs/greater Baton Rouge area and has been a mentor to a number of area Edward Jones agents.

Highlights of the DSHS-Walker game will be shown. Fine will also interview Nettles about the upcoming Zachary game.

The Dru Nettles Show is a Jon Fine Production. For more information on the program, please visit JonFineProductions.com or “Like” TheDruNettlesShow on Facebook.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Last week I said I would explain why LSU has a great chance to beat Alabama this week. The whole premise is based off the principle that Alabama is NOT as good as last year or as good as they appear this year.

Alabama has yet to face a top tier team, and away from Bryant-Denny the competition has been underwhelming.

Combine that with LSU having a week off and playing at home and the intangibles are in the Tigers favor.

As for those concerned about last January, consider these two thoughts. As bad as LSU was on offense that night, the final score was just 21-0. As bad as LSU was on offense last November at Alabama the Tigers still won that game. These facts lead me to think that even if LSU loses, the game will look more like the Florida game this year than the BCS game last year.

So how can LSU move the ball on Alabama to give the defense a rest and have a chance of scoring a touchdown on Alabama for the first time in 8 quarters? Well....they probably can't without a great special teams play or a turnover in Alabama territory. Sure, some misdirection, different formations, and deception would help but if you have been holding your breath waiting for that you are dead by now.

Realistically, if you want LSU to win you need to root for great defense, a +2 or more in turnover ratio and the best special teams performance we have seen all year. The good news is the game is Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium and that means it is possible.

As for Central, it is hard to remember such a turnaround from one half to the next. On offense, the Wildcats went from 36 yards of offense to scoring touchdowns the first four possessions of the second half. The defense went from not being able to get off the field to forcing turnovers. Overall, the second half showed a lot for the character of the team and the leadership in coaching, which is why Central is district champions for the 5th consecutive season.

And in case you thought I would let the Saints awful performance pass by without a comment, I wish you were right. There are too many variables to try to figure out the one reason or even top 5 reasons the Saints are 2-5. Nevertheless, I will give you my top 2.

First, the play of the defensive line is abominable. For Denver to just run at Will Smith all night and dominate him with a tight end is beyond explanation, and is just one example of what has happened all year along the defensive front. Hicks has been the only bright spot on a defensive line that has played worse than awful.

Second, it is too big of a coincidence for the defense to be historically bad and Sean Payton is suspended for the year. Some people are starting to say that the defense is so bad that Payton would not make a difference. I believe the opposite. If the defense was just very bad instead of disgustingly bad, the Saints would be 5-2.

My biggest hope is that Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton are sitting at home making a list of the 5-8 players worth keeping on defense so when they get back they totally overhaul the personnel.

HEY REF

When so many people are scratching their heads trying to figure out why their children’s behavior has hit rock bottom all they need to do is look in the mirror. Parent’s behavior at games, I should say at EVERY game leaves me to wonder how these people go through life away from the football field. We’re entering the final week of high school football and for some it must seem like the end of the world.

I remember a thing called Sportsmanship that thing fewer and fewer adults are bringing with them to the football games in and around Baton Rouge. I remember the pure disgust that would stir inside my stomach when I was calling little league baseball. Now it seems it has morphed itself to include the high school football games.

Why do we have anything except varsity games? I’m one of the few that accepts the need for Jr. High and Jr. Varsity games as the place where an athlete will learn his skills before walking onto the varsity field. But after being away from working high school games for twelve years I knew things would be a little different. Like players getting bigger and faster.

But the real change has come among those sitting in the stands watching games. It seems to me that many of those fans don’t have lives. Each game feels like going to an execution. In that I mean those on the losing side wouldn’t have anything to live for once the game was “in the books” so to speak. Sub varsity games are supposed to be where an athlete would begin to learn the game from the inside.

But what seems to be happening is the parents believe this 9th grade game tonight is all that’s left in this world. Parents, when officials try to help these young athletes how to line up and stay set before the snap it isn’t meant to help the other team beat your team. We strive to help youngsters when we can so that we don’t spend the majority of the game walking five yards this way then five yards the other.

And YES we can call holding on every play, hands down. But how many parents want the officials to do this? The only ones that do are the parents of the team with the ball. I wonder how many parents are living their lives through their child’s life. Well, all I can think it’s more than 90% just by their behavior during the games. Of course “little Johnny” never holds he always plays by the rules. It has to be the OTHER guys that are holding.

If you’ve never heard the term “PREVENTATIVE” officiating let me educate you. A simple example is when one player’s head is in the neutral zone we as officials will tell the player between plays to back up or get back depending on what side of the ball they’re on. One coach will thank you for not calling the foul on his team but as soon as the other team has the ball he goes ballistic if you tell the other team to back up a bit.

If I had my way each and every parent would spend an entire year working football games for nothing. This way they might actually learn the rules. There are so many experts sitting in the stands that I feel you are hurting the game by staying home or sitting in the stands trying to tell everyone the rules and how the officials on the field really don’t know what they are doing.

So, please do the game a great service, get off your asses and try to call a few games and we’ll see just how much you really don’t know! I’m not about to let the officials off the hook by no means. I spent nearly 20 years calling football in this area before a bad injury caused me to “retire”. Well, I’ve tried to return to the field but what I’ve found is scaring me to the core.

The quality of the officials calling games has drastically declined. So many of the best that have put on the striped shirt have left the game entirely. And I feel it’s due to the lack of respect given them by parents, coaches and the media. For whatever reason the games are suffering because so many good officials have hung up their whistles and aren’t returning year after year.

So, I’ll close by asking all the great officials instead of sitting in the stands please put on the uniform and help the sport you know so much about by getting involved and start at your earliest convenience and start calling real games and not those video games on your TV!!!

Till next week… …
