THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Why does the NCAA make everything so difficult? If you are like me, you have been asking yourself that question on a consistent basis for years. I think I have a few answers.
First and foremost, they can’t or won’t innovate. They are constantly behind the curve, reacting to the landscape of sports, society, and reality. The contrast between the professional leagues and the NCAA over the past 40 years makes this reality obvious.
The NFL was threatened by the USFL in the mid 80s. The “National Football League” (imagine a deep voice saying that) adopted free agency to kill the advantage their competition was using to attract players. As a young person, I thought that free agency would destroy the NFL. The exact opposite has taken place and it has led to football taking over our sports society.
Keep in mind, though, the NFL was proactive in making the change to their structure and because of that foresight they were able to install parameters. Those parameters allowed every team the ability to prosper if they operated their franchise the right way with the right people in charge.
The NBA, under David Stern, was dominated by LA, Boston, Chicago, and other big city teams. After the NFL made their changes and had success, the NBA quickly followed suit. They put their own spin and installed a softer salary cap, but still have a structure to where small market teams can compete.
Major League Baseball is the league that is most like the NCAA. Stuck in their old ways and very slow to innovate. As a result, they have fallen behind. While the NBA and NFL have constantly tinkered with different rules to make the game better (moving the three point line, adjusting kickoff rules, overtime rules, etc.), MLB couldn’t pull the trigger on any improvements to increase pace of play.
The other issue with the NCAA is it is not providing their stated purpose. “The NCAA stands for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. It is a member-led organization that governs and promotes college sports in the United States. The NCAA oversees athletics programs at over 1,200 member colleges and universities.” Or at least that is what Google AI told me.
I think the NCAA is 0 for 3 in their mission. They are not member led, nobody is leading. The NCAA has done an awful job of governing. Just look at how they handled Will Wade, Bill Self, and other basketball coaches differently. Since the NCAA is reactive, doesn’t lead and has completely stopped governing, the NCAA is unable to promote college sports well.
There were many moments along the way where the NCAA could have changed their rules or rules enforcement and allowed athletes to make money signing autographs. The rules could have allowed athletes to accept meals that did not exceed a certain amount. Rules could have been adapted to provide exceptions through a quick appeal process for paid transportation if an athlete needed to fly home due to a tragedy at home.
When the dam finally broke, and they had plenty of warning, the NCAA could have had a plan in place to manage the new world of transfers and NIL. They were unprepared and are clueless today. As teams are playing for championships in football and basketball, the portal is open for players to leave their teams. Like MLB, small market teams and smaller schools don’t stand a chance to keep up with the payrolls of the bigger schools. The trickle down effect has fans looking forward to great conference rivalries like Stanford and Miami.
Fortunately, college fans love their universities and the product is good. But the brand is tarnished and some major improvements need to be made. Professional leagues are able to come up with a calendar for player movement that makes sense and college athletics needs to figure this out soon. Sports are better when there is quality competition. There needs to be a salary structure.
I do not have expertise in this area, but it seems like a good place to start would be to light a fire to the NCAA handbook and start over. 90% of what is in there was for a world where student-athletes were amateur and did not get paid. That world is over so start over.
