Finally, there is another way. For years, the only way LSU could beat a good football team was to dominate the line of scrimmage. If the Tigers couldn’t do that, then LSU would lose.
Saturday, LSU lost the battle between the tackles. The Tigers could not gain a yard if they had to between the tackles. There was a point during the game where Auburn was gaining almost 10 yards a carry running right at LSU.
Then an amazing thing happened. Something I see all the time watching college football, but I have not seen from LSU in years. LSU’s offense tried something else. Matt Canada ran a jet sweep for Stephen Sullivan and it resulted in a touchdown.
At the end of the first half, LSU ran a two minute offense like a team that actually practiced a two minute offense. Danny Etling showed that he can throw the ball on time and trust his receivers. LSU’s receivers, mostly DJ Chark, won 1 on 1 match-ups.
Toward the end of the game, Etling finally threw the ball to Guice out the backfield and allowed him to make a play in space and pick up a third down. All of these simple, yet unused aspects of offense, led to a wonderful comeback Saturday.
Auburn helped a little. Gus Malzahan and his offensive staff were on point in the first half. They ran against LSU’s speed rushing front, they passed against LSU’s base defense, and they attacked Grant Delpit in the passing game instead of LSU’s corners.
In the second half, LSU played better against the Wildcat formation by bringing another defender in the box. LSU’s defensive backs completely dominated Auburn’s wide receivers. Thankfully, Auburn didn’t watch film of the Syracuse, Mississipi State, or Troy games. All those teams ran quick wide passes (bubble screens) and play action passes testing LSU’s defensive backs willingness to be physical and their ability to be disciplined. Auburn stuck with middle runs and deep passes.
Can this young team with injuries to their most talented players keep it up for one more week before the off week? Who knows. I am sure the coaches think this team can, but it will be a challenge this week keeping the team locked in on the the task at hand against an Ole Miss team with nothing to lose.
If LSU struggles against Ole Miss, don’t be shocked. But, if this team comes out, jumps on Ole Miss and stays on them, then maybe these Tigers have turned a corner in maturity.
I am not going to try and breakdown one of the craziest Saints games I have ever seen, which is saying a lot. Instead, I will hit on a few odds and ends.
● Ted Ginn might be the smartest man in the NFL. If he had played his whole career in New Orleans… ILLEGAL FORMATION…
● Having Armstead back makes a huge difference. Staying healthy on the offensive line… HOLDING…
● Is it too simplistic to say turnovers will be the difference to the Saints winning or losing games… TURNOVER..
● In a game that had so many memorable plays, my favorite was a third and one play. The Saints had already shown they could not gain a yard between the tackles. Then Payton showed why he is one of the best with a misdirection handoff to the fullback which turned into an option pitch to Alvin Kamara. It was a simple, beautifully designed and created play that was well executed. Of course, it is unfortunate… INJURY TO A LIONS PLAYER…
● I give the Lions a ton of credit for completing the whole game. They are a talented team with players like A’shawn Robinson who could end up being a Hall of Fame defensive lineman down the road. That being said, the Lions were the beneficiary in the second half of the same gift the Saints received in London against the Dolphins. When every third play is a penalty on the offense, the defense's job is much too
ILLEGAL BLOCK AGAINST A NOT DEFENSELESS, DEFENSELESS DEFENDER…
● Let’s see if you pass the true Saints fan test. Were you like me at the end, and every fiber of your body expected Lions to go 99 yards, go for 2, and win at the end. Then Cam Jordan stepped in… DEFLECTION… TOUCHDOWN… SAINTS WIN… WHO DAT!
But, I am still a Saints fan, so take my advice and pick up the Packers new quarterback Hundley in fantasy this week. We know what rookie quarterbacks do to the Saints.
HEY REF
I don’t like to let my readers down so this will be the last time I address the circus that was once called professional football. For the life of me I just cannot and will not spend another week trying to figure out these hypocrites masquerading as the NFL Commissioner, NFL team owners and NFL players. I also have to include in my disgust the BIGGEST HYPOCRITES OF ALL; those NFL fans still sitting in stadiums and just by their continued attendance are doing even more harm because it shows their support of those kneeling on the flag, etc., etc. Mr. Goodell said at his weekly press conference that the NFL is working with the players as they try to understand why some of the players have taken this action.
Like I previously stated and wrote in this column this commissioner and these owners have to do as the players tell them because if this protest goes much longer some paychecks could show a deficiency where it matters most; the bottom line. If or when the owners are forced to dig into their pockets to pay these billions of dollars in salaries then and only then will the players stand erect while reciting the National Anthem before every game!
It’s almost comical to hear the players’ reason for their protest, society’s inequality toward minorities and so on. It’s just way too convenient for the players to point a finger at the problems many of them are directly responsible for. I’ll say this one last time putting on a two day football camp and handing out T-Shirts won’t do anything to decrease the violence going on in our country. When it’s a daily happening where friends that grew up together kill one another for $5.00 or $10.00 worth of drugs you can kneel all year long on a mountain of flags and not a single murder will be prevented.
So, let’s roll up the circus tent for now and maybe one day we’ll get serious about stopping all this violence. But for now about the only thing I see these hypocrite millionaires playing professional football are doing is making a mockery of the men and women who’ve served this country and sacrificed their lives so that we all have the right of free speech. Even when we make fools of ourselves and the people we work for.
I want to move onto a story that has some very serious consequences for every school in the nation and that is what’s going on with the disgraced former basketball coach from Louisville, one Rick Pitino. Yes, he’s guilty as sin for helping his recruits make up their minds and play basketball for him. His lawyer, Steve Pence (?) reported his client, Pitino, received a grand jury subpoena from the Federal court for the southern district of New York.
The court is demanding he turn over all documents and communications (emails, cellphone records and text messages) including SOCIAL MEDIA and his personal computer going back to Jan. 1 2014 to present day. This isn’t the NCAA’s investigation but the U. S. Federal Courts prying eyes as his actions relate to actual or potential NCAA rules violations. So this is a very serious development in that the NCAA hasn’t led this action in getting their hands on just what it was Pitino did in fact supply to his recruits.
You can bet that every university president, chancellor, etc. has already or will be dedicating money and resources to insure their programs get cleaned up. If I was a betting man I’d be willing to bet that all those lights staying on 24 hours a day on just about every campus is for one exclusive reason. And that is to be certain all possible evidence and/or proof that their coaching staffs being just as guilty of doing what Pitino is charged with doing destroy every bit of that evidence.
I think it’s called self-preservation and if the feds really get to digging even a little bit they’ll find so much wrongdoing it may be the death sentence for the NCAA. I know everybody will say it wasn’t their school but another in the conference that started all this inexcusable behavior and they had to go along so their school could stay competitive. Well, schools and conferences that excuse won’t hold up in any court of law.
As it always is if you want to find the guilty ones just follow the money. I mean the mafia is trying to find out how NCAA member schools have been able to operate a payoff system without bodies floating washing up on the beaches. Again, if the feds do start digging they’ll find so much dirt on every branch of the NCAA tree we might see a suspension of all athletic events for who knows how long.
With BILLIONS of dollars changing hands on a daily basis by NCAA member schools and none of it going to the players or not supposed to be going to players I don’t think it will take very long before another Joe “Valachi” turns rat and starts singing like a bird to save his neck. After all one senator goes for about $100,000 dollars today. So, just think of the buying power a $10 BILLION dollar a year business has!
Stay tuned boys and girls; this could become a very rough ride for a very long time. I’ll just wait for the movie to come out on DVD…
Till next week…
