Saints fans have been wondering since the end of the season how Loomis and Payton would live up to their promise of great change to fix the ills that caused a 7-9 season. While many in the national media cannot understand or figure out the plan, I am starting to understand the plan.
The past few years the Saints have been plugging holes through free agency and willing to look at their selections in the draft as 2-3 year projects. The Saints have also been willing to trade away picks to move up and get a player they feel may be the final piece to the puzzle.
This year the Saints are accumulating picks seemingly for the purpose of freeing future cap space, getting younger, and increasing their odds of getting good young players. In recent years, the Saints have not been afraid of drafting players that are a year or two away from making an impact. After the moves of last week, that should not be the case this year.
While I am on board with most of the transactions the Saints have made to this point, this plan will only work with a productive draft. In my opinion, the Saints are currently better at just one position and that is cornerback. They may be better at running back if CJ Spiller can stay healthy and make big plays on offense and as a kick returner. At the other positions, the Saints will either be counting on a rookie to be produce or a veteran that has yet to be productive.
Loomis said there was a checklist of about 20 moves to be made this off season. Without being privy to the list, here is what I think is left to do:
1. Right guard. I can't see the Saints really have faith in Lelito if he could not beat out Goodwin last year.
2. Athletic defensive tackle. The Saints must get faster in the front seven. I think I am prioritizing this position a lot higher than others.
3. Athletic linebacker that can cover. Everyone keeps talking about getting a pass rushing end. That is later on the list, since I don't think the Saints have a guy like this on the roster.
4. Cornerback. I hope the Saints struck gold with Delvin Breaux, and I would love for Stanley Jean-Baptiste to be a good player, but…
5. Pass rushing end. Gallette and Jordan are pretty good. That is why I have this spot behind a linebacker that can cover.
6. Speed receiver. The offense was at its best last year when Joe Morgan was on the field. Seantavius Jones might be the guy, but the are a couple of big play receivers in the draft.
7. Tight end. The Saints need another tight end, but I just don't see it as the highest priority.
I am aware those are a lot of needs to fill with rookies, but the Saints have nine picks right now. They won't hit the nail on the head with all nine picks, and they don't need to if some younger veterans make a jump in production.
It is as if LSU basketball is Clark Kent and the Pelicans are Superman. You never see them in the same place at the same time, but they are so familiar. The great news is you don't need to watch both teams play. If you watched LSU lose to Auburn, then you saw the Pels lose to the Nuggets.
Somehow, the tournament selection committee didn't care much about LSU losing to Auburn. That means I get to fill out two brackets like I did in my younger days. One dream bracket where LSU wins it all, and one bracket that I actually think will happen.
In my "real" bracket, I have two 12 seed upsets. I have a lot of confidence in Wyoming and a fair amount of confidence in Stephen F Austin. Jumping to the Final Four, I have Kentucky, Arizona, Duke, and Virginia. In the Championship Game, I have Kentucky beating Virginia 67-54.
Enjoy the greatest sports weekend of the year!
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
This week I open up by calling today’s column “SPECIAL” since the LHSAA did something unbelievable at this past Wednesday’s meeting. I shake my head and can’t understand how something that’s not real and untested can be sanctioned and approved by the governing body that controls football officials for high schools throughout the state of Louisiana.
I had a few ideas for this week’s column but on my way home from a special meeting at LHSAA headquarters this afternoon everything has to take a back seat. You probably won’t hear or read anything about it but today those that think they know what’s going on in the high school football official’s world all I can say is they were “duped” when they voted to de-certify the River Parish Football Officials Association.
I can say this without hesitation since I’m on the inside and not one looking in from the outside. At the heart of this matter is a few disenchanted officials who were successful in their “Power-Grab” and gaining certification for a football official’s association that doesn’t exist except in the minds of a very few individuals. The name of this “NEW” association is the South Louisiana Football Official’s Association.
These officials are the very same ones that became disenchanted with Baton Rouge’s Association and ran down to Laplace and joined River Parish. They claimed some things weren’t done the way every other association in the state handles business and were there representing the officials in River Parish that felt they had no control of electing board members, officers, etc. since R. P. is a privately owned company.
But what they actually accomplished was nothing more than a hostile takeover. In fact Mr. Ronnie Francis was an elected board member in the River Parish Association and had his opportunity to make changes and improvements from within while sitting on the board but was not successful so he quit the board. He ran down to Keith Alexander’s office at the LHSAA headquarters on Old Hammond HWY. in Baton Rouge and lobbied him for hours to de-certify River Parish.
Mr. Francis along with a few other disenchanted friends or as I like to call them, his partners in crime, claimed in the meeting to represent many of the officials in River Parish that are seeking this change in associations, which of course is a bold face LIE!! When this whole mess started to blow up I emailed Mr. Francis on Jan. 28, ‘15 and also the Assigning Secretary; Don Herman on Feb. 28, ‘15 and also one of the top officials, Jimmy Macias on March 3, ‘15, at River Parish to please explain what was going on since I was a new member in the River Parish Association and wasn’t aware of all this in-fighting. Well as of today, March 18, ’15 I’ve NEVER HEARD FROM ANY OF THEM.
So, I guess I won’t be allowed to work anymore football games and will go quietly out to pasture. But one thing they’ve seemed confident of is all those former members of River Parish will just beat the doors down to convert over to this new association with its disgruntled leadership. How will coaches react to this new association?
I think some of the schools that left the Baton Rouge association hoping to get better officials with River Parish will go back to Baton Rouge. One other question to be answered is will those coaches that don’t want to return to the Baton Rouge association will these coaches be willing to rely on an untested product?
I find it sad that grown men can’t sit down and work problems out and that some feel the need to launder their business in the open instead of internally, where it belongs. I’m not privy to what was said in Mr. Alexander’s office but I feel he’s been taken for a ride and not given all the facts. That’s just my gut talking since Mr. Francis wouldn’t even answer questions put to him by members of his association.
Mr. Alexander just be forewarned that with each and every mistake made by this new bunch of disgruntled football officials your name will come up since it was you that rammed it through the committee meeting and getting them sanctioned without even being made aware of who’ll be wearing the stripes come fall.
Till next week…
