THE WIZARDRY OF OS
If you eliminate the point spread and just try to predict the winner of a college football game in 2022, just figure out who has the better quarterback that day.
If you ask yourself, how is UCLA 6-0? They have a 5th year starting quarterback, Dorian Thomsoon-Robinson III, who is having his best season and has been the best quarterback on the field in every game they have played.
LSU fans know all too well that the best quarterback on the field in the FSU and Tennessee games played for the Noles and the Vols. I am not bashing on Jayden Daniels. He was the best quarterback on the field in the Auburn game by a smidge and LSU won that game by a smidge. Many college football fans are wondering how LSU beat Mississippi State, and the answer is that Daniels was the best quarterback that night. LSU’s defense played well and Rogers was just average (his receivers did not help). But Daniels ran for 93 and threw for 210 in maybe his best game so far.
Stetson Bennett, CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, Caleb Williams and Hendon Hooker are a few of the top quarterbacks and Georgia, Ohio State, Bama, USC, and Tennessee are all top 10 teams.
Look at the contrast between teams with their starting quarterbacks and their backups. Kentucky was a top 10 team until Will Levis got hurt, then they lost at home to South Carolina. Alabama was looking like Alabama until Bryce Young got hurt. Then they almost lost at home to Texas A&M who finally got decent play at quarterback from their original starting quarterback (not the backup Coach Fisher).
There are more examples. Texas had Bama on the ropes with Ewers starting and still made it a game after he went out. The next few weeks were a major struggle for the Longhorns. Then Ewers returned against Oklahoma and Texas embarrassed the Sooners. Why? Oklahoma did not have their starting quarterback.
Arkansas was on their way to a great season until they lost KJ Jefferson. Florida looked great in week one and week 4 when their quarterback played up to his preseason hype. In every other game, he has shown that he has a way to go to live up to that hype and the Gators have struggled.
The NFL does not follow this simple rule. Top 5 quarterbacks do make a difference, especially in close games. After that, though, the winning team usually wins the line of scrimmage and makes the fewest mistakes.
In college football, both teams make tons of mistakes. The teams with the best quarterbacks have a huge margin of error because the quarterback washes away those mistakes like a wave washing away a footprint in the sand. The second and third tier teams go up and down with the tide because their quarterback play is up and down. Back in the day, teams with great defenses would level things out and avoid these ups and downs, but those great defenses don’t exist anymore. Who in the SEC has a defense that can overcome shaky or inconsistent quarterback play? Bama and Georgia? Maybe. Barely.
The greatest season in LSU history was led by the greatest quarterback in LSU history. In 1992, Bama had one of the greatest teams I had seen, and their quarterback was below average. For a long time, Miami and Florida State were dominant with quarterbacks that could not succeed in the NFL because they were boosted by the team around them. Now, quarterbacks lift the entire team around them.
Again, this statement is not to burn Jayden Daniels. But, if LSU had Hendon Hooker, who do you think would have won last Saturday? Yes, LSU needs to improve their special teams. The offensive line needs to get healthy and develop chemistry. Regardless, look around Tiger fans. Arkansas, Kentucky, and even the great Alabama Crimson Tide are showing us all how important the college quarterback is to winning and losing in 2022.

PRESS RELEASE
The 2022 school year marks the 27th season that Jon Fine (Sports) Productions will have the privilege of producing and calling play-by-play for Denham Springs HS Football radio broadcasts. In 2022, the broadcast slate will include the Jamboree, all 10 regular season Denham games, and every playoff game. Broadcasts can be heard on Family Radio-91.9 FM Baton Rouge. All broadcasts can also be heard on the Internet at JonFineProductions.com (click Listen Live on the Denham Springs Football PBP page). The Jamboree air time is 5:30 pm. Subsequent broadcasts will air at 6:00 pm. The first broadcast is Friday, August 26 when the Jackets visit Walker HS in a Jamboree.

“Sport N Center Jackets Warm-Up” will feature an interview with Jackets Football Coach Brett Beard conducted by Josh Ward. Jon Fine will speak with a prominent Denham Springs community and/or sports figure. Ward and Covington will also offer a preview of that night’s game and other pertinent information.

During the “Ralph Sellers Chevrolet Post-Game Show”, there will be an extensive game recap, final stats and a look ahead.
When Denham Springs picks up a first down, they’ll achieve a Big Mike’s Sports Bar & Grill First Down. When the Jackets score, the scoring drive will be recapped on the Brandy Robertson State Farm Insurance Scoring Drive. The coach Beard interview is being brought to you by SERVPRO of Livingston. When the Jackets have secured a victory, Ward will indicate that the victory is in the bank, brought to you by Bank Plus.
Sport-N-Center owner Stacy Phipps (Baseball) and Big Mike O’Neal (Football) were athletes at Denham Springs HS. Ralph Sellers Chevrolet Parts Manager Jim McChristian, a former Jackets color commentator, says he was an athlete at Denham Springs HS, but we have had a difficult time verifying this claim! lol
Fine expressed that he is especially appreciative of the loyal commercial and name mention sponsors the broadcasts have had on Jon Fine Sports Productions’ Denham Springs HS play-by-play broadcasts throughout the years. Many have been with the broadcasts on a year-in, year-out basis. Fine expressed hope that listeners will have the opportunity to patronize these businesses and let them know they heard about them on DSHS Football radio broadcasts.
