THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

For those seeking closure to the LSU baseball by trying to figure out if they overachieved or underachieved, look at the MLB draft. The draft has spoken, and LSU probably overachieved.

ULL had 7 players drafted and 5 were in the first 21 rounds. LSU had 5 players drafted and only 3 were in the first 21 rounds. Ibarra, Foster, and a few others have ability, but either had poor years or have not developed. In the case of Foster, most Tiger fans have forgotten that he began the year as the clean-up hitter. At the end of the year, he was strictly a defensive sub in the late innings.

Despite losing Aaron Nola, the future is bright. LSU won whole bunch of games this year, and the majority of the players who impacted those wins are returning. These returning players also have skills the major league teams covet, yet they must continue to develop.

Two of those players have measurables that will wow major league teams. Yet, Stevenson and Laird must work hard to translate those measurables to the field in order to increase their draft stock. With the speed they have, they must become better base runners. They should steal bases with a very high rate of success without getting picked off.

In the field, LSU will return over two thirds of the lineup that played and contributed on a daily basis. They will add some top notch recruits that will either add great depth or make an instant impact similar to Bregman and Fraley.

The pitching is where the 2014 Tigers overachieved the most, and that is where the Tigers need the most impact from players who did not play for LSU in 2014. Over the course of a season most college baseball teams rely on 10 or 11 pitchers. LSU will need at least six pitchers that were either hurt this year or in high school this year to be either frontline starters or reliable bullpen contributors.

In a week, we are going to find out if Jimmy Graham is a wide receiver or a tight end. I think it should be a no brainer that he is a tight end. Magic Johnson was a point guard even though he often played in the post toward the end of his career after he developed a baby hook. Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles were running backs for the Saints despite the fact they caught almost as many passes as they had rushing attempts, and they lined up as wide receivers over half the time.

In closing, I think I speak for all American soccer fans that want to enjoy the World Cup. I understand the odds of getting out of our group are not good, but please just score some goals and make it exciting! USA!

HEY REF

If the report is true Les Miles has another problem child on his roster. Fox Sports is reporting that LSU starting safety Jalen Mills was arrested after his failure to appear in court to face charges he assaulted a woman in his apartment on May 4th. The affidavit filed states in the early hours of May 4th he punched the female “guest” in the mouth while visiting him at his apartment leaving her on the floor and briefly unconscious.

Police reportedly contacted Mills about the charges on May 29th and he informed them he was in Houston, Texas but would be returning to the Baton Rouge campus on June 9th. He stated that he’d be attending summer school that day so he was given a 24 hour reprieve. Authorities then agreed that the meeting would be delayed until the next day and he’d have to report no later than June 10th.

Police said they even went so far as to try and contact him by phone but were unable to do so. Police also have acknowledged that Mills didn’t try to return their calls or report any problems he might be having in making the meeting. At the end of the day their efforts were in vain and that left police with no choice but to file an arrest warrant. Mills was arrested early Wednesday morning and Coach Les Miles has indefinitely suspended the defensive player.

In this country we are presumed innocent until proven guilty so the only comment I’ll make at this time is I hope the charges turn out to be false. And IF they are false then the “book should be thrown” at this woman. But if these charges of battery are in fact true then we need to ask if there’s a trend coming from the Baton Rouge campus.

Two names from recent history; Zach Mettenberger and Jeremy Hill, come to light. These two former starters came to LSU with troubled pasts but went on to star for the Tigers and are now trying to ply their trade in the NFL. You’d think that other Tiger players would understand that their behavior would be kinda under a microscope. I’m just saying…

College athletes should be able to figure out that when it comes to personal behavior they must “tow-the-line” any and every time whether in public or not. And always when a woman is involved they should take extra precautions not to give the slightest hint of indiscretions.

But some may try to say the problem with this edition of Tigers is the lack of discipline from its head coach. To some degree Les Miles is to blame because the buck has to stop somewhere. When he sent his recruiters out to land Mettenberger he let it be known that no matter what is in your background if you are a great football player then you’ve got a friend in Miles.

As we all know Zach was booted from the Bulldogs football program after he plead guilty to sexual battery for groping a female bartender while a freshman at Georgia. Even his self-admission to that crime, Miles still pursued Mettenberger because the position was being vacated and Miles was in desperate need of a proven winner.

With that said, Zach DID turn his life around and was never again a poster child for bad behavior the remainder of his playing days in Baton Rouge. But with Hill he doubled down as Jeremy was guilty of a sexual offense while a senior at Redemptorist High School. He then went on to star in the “sucker punch” at a Tiger area bar. If not for pressure from the LSU universe Mr. Hill would still be doing time at a local prison.

I’ll wait to pass judgment on Jalen Mills though because we all make mistakes. But coach Miles must do something about the way his players act and if they can’t stay away and out of trouble then it’s time to find another way to fill the roster at the so called flagship university of Louisiana. After all coaching these young men isn’t only on the playing field but also in life’s matters and how they should conduct themselves as ambassadors of the LSU system…

Till next week…
