The 2015 recruiting class has signed, almost all coaching changes have been made, and the underclassmen have declared for the NFL draft. That means we can officially put the 2014 LSU football season behind us and look to the 2015 football season.
There are many reasons to be optimistic. One reason is that there are few freshmen LSU will be counting on to step in and produce immediately.
LSU will be experienced and talented in the offensive line. There will be work to find the right combination of players, but there is no reason to think that won't happen and there is plenty of competition to push the starters. I don't expect any freshmen to play.
The running backs are just about as deep, talented, and versatile as one college could possibly have at one time. You might read at one point that LSU is lacking at fullback, but I see that as a positive. I would much rather have the best players on the field than forcing a fullback on the field and keeping a talented receiver on the sideline. The freshmen will get some playing time behind Williams and Fournette.
Speaking of receivers, there is no lack of talent or depth there either. LSU returns it's top receivers and adds another extremely talented receiver in Tyron Johnson from Warren Easton, who I don't expect to play much beyond special teams.
LSU returns almost all their tight ends as well. Blockers like Dillon Gordon, and receivers like DeShean Smith bring versatility to the position. LSU signed three tight ends, but none of them should see any action on the field at tight end next year.
Put it all together and LSU might have the most talented offense in college football, if it were not for the huge question at quarterback. I continue to be dumbfounded how Ohio State is going to return three extremely productive quarterbacks plus a four star quarterback, yet LSU remains in a pickle. Nevertheless, it appears at the present time that LSU's effectiveness on offense will fall completely on the shoulders of Brandon Harris. Let's all hope he is up to the challenge. The pieces are in place to ease his burden.
The main contributions from true freshmen should come on defense and special teams. Kevin Tolliver and Donte Jackson could play in the secondary and definitely will contribute on special teams. Jeremy Cutrer could play some at safety. Fortunately, the Tigers should have enough flexibility to start the season with experienced players getting most of the playing time until the younger players are ready.
LSU did not sign a linebacker. Either Clifton Garrett needs to step in and play like the number one prospect he was last year or one of the veteran linebackers that have been waiting their turn must show significant improvement.
The defensive line is my top concern on the team other than quarterback. Many people are putting tons of faith in Ed Orgeron. He has a tough job. LSU did not sign a defensive tackle and the defensive ends that signed most likely won't contribute as true freshmen. The defensive line is a very difficult position to step in and play as a true freshman.
Arden Key might be an impact player on special teams, but he is going to need a year to get stronger to play on the line. Last year LSU signed a number of defensive tackle prospects that I thought could be impact players, so I do have hope. But, I don't think there are any all conference players at defensive end.
As I said in the beginning, LSU is not counting on true freshmen to come in and play this year like they did last year at receiver, running back, and defensive back. That is great news. That means if a true freshmen plays, they are special and ready to play, and not being rushed into a role out of necessity. We will have the whole off season to decide if that fact will result in more wins next year.

Before we try and forget the horrendous ending to this year’s Super Bowl I’d like to pass along a quick update; The NFL did fine four Seattle players for their actions during the final 18 seconds of the game. The largest fine, if you can call it that, went to Seahawk’s linebacker Bruce Irvin. For his role in the fight he’ll be forking over the grandiose sum of $10,000 while teammate Michael Bennett must forfeit $8,628.00! New England had two players fined for throwing punches; Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui, also wrote checks for that meager sum of $8,628.
To show you just how ludicrous and comical these fines are the NFL in its infinite wisdom handed out a fine of $11,025.00 to Doug Baldwin. You remember what he did, right? He committed unsportsmanlike behavior when he celebrated too much after catching that 3 yard touchdown that made the margin ten points (24-14) in the third quarter.
You shouldn’t have to wonder anymore why the league is so inept at maintaining discipline after trying to digest the thinking of how these amounts were decided upon. On one hand you’ve got a guy scoring a touchdown in the biggest game of the year which has to be the greatest feeling any player will experience during their careers. Then on the other you’ve got a select few players that had absolutely no class when they resorted to throwing punches after the game was finally decided.
You’d expect to see professional players reaching out to one another, shaking hands and congratulating members of the wining team. But this game didn’t end the way it should have, no this game quickly descended into what the NFL has unfortunately become. The NFL has many problems least of which is disciplining its players. When the top dogs misbehave and only receive a very light pat on the wrist you can be assured these problems will continue.
But all is not lost in the Northwest Territory, not in the least. I have to hand it to Pete Carroll for the professional way he’s standing up and taking the heat for calling a final, doomed pass that was picked off by New England. Many Seahawk fans are calling for the head of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.
The smart call was of course handing the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch. He got you to the big dance and that’s the man you’ve got to rely on when it “crunch-time”. But history will show this pass play was the one that doomed the Seahawks and kept them from repeating as Super Bowl champs. We’re told that you learn from your mistakes and this little mistake should earn all involved a degree in “How to win football games”. But Carroll took all of the blame and has done his best at deflecting any criticism of his young offensive coordinator.
The rumor mill has Marshawn Lynch walking away from football all together. I don’t see him doing it because he’s still got a few years left physically and the money some teams will be throwing his way just can’t be turned down. The Denver Broncos have been hit with a second starter mulling over ending his playing days; Wes Welker.
Welker will be a free agent next month and the 33 year old receiver has sustained his share of head injuries. Added to the mix is his drop off in production, age and the very good possibility of a hefty pay cut. That just smells like a guy hanging ‘em up.
Of course all the attention right now is solely on what Peyton will do. I won’t go out on the limb and say Manning is done because he’s been counted out on more than one occasion. If I was a betting man I’d say he’ll be back for a final year since he won’t want to be remembered for the way the last season ended. If his pride counts for anything, Denver will be celebrating his return and will want to send him on his way to the Hall of Fame as a Super Bowl winner. Stranger things have happened; though…
Till next week…
