So many thoughts from the Super Bowl and all that comes with it and so little time…
• In all the talk about Marshawn Lynch and how he handled the media events, I never heard anyone propose the following theory. Could there be a psychiatric issue causing Lynch’s behavior? If the answer is yes, then the NFL should be notified and he should be excused from those events. If the answer is no, then his inability to handle the events on his own is inexplicable to me. If the answer is that nobody has thought of this, then the NFL and the Seahawks are negligent.
• Chris Carter needs to check himself. His analysis of the Super Bowl has been spent destroying Seahawk receivers and Peyton Manning. At last count, Carter won zero Super Bowls. Peyton Manning has won one and played in three with two different franchises. The whole “greatest quarterback of all time debate” should be fun and light. As for Carter, I refer back to a quote I used last week from Henry Kaiser who said, “When your work speak for itself, don’t interrupt.” Membership in the Hall of Fame should not be used as a weapon to show other his superiority. That “trash talk” should be left on the field. In its current form, I think most grown-ups see it as childish.
• Too much is made of one game in the NFL, especially the Super Bowl. The Seahawks completely outplayed the Broncos. But as I have said all year, play that game again and it could come down to the last series if the Broncos get off to a decent start. For anyone that doesn’t believe me, go back and look at the Saints versus Seahawks from game one to game two. The difference was how the game started.
• Against the strongest opponents the Seahawks played more than once (Niners, Cardinals, and Saints), the Seahawks totally dominated the first game. The second game was either a loss or closely contested. I don’t have an explanation, but I find it very interesting.
• There are many that want to put this Seahawk defense in the category of the ’85 Bears and ’00 Ravens. The game is so different in how it is played on offense, so yards surrendered are a bad metric. But in the area of points surrendered, the Seahawks don’t measure up. The Bears had 2 shutouts and gave up 10 points in the Super Bowl. The Ravens allowed 3, 10, 3, and 7 points. The Seahawks allowed 15, 17, and 8. For perspective, the Seahawks allowed 32 points in the first two playoff games which is one less than the ’85 Bears and ’00 Raven allowed combined in their 7 games! I know Seattle fans will point to holding the Broncos #1 ranked offense to 8 points are their evidence. But the Broncos only scored 24 and 26 in their two home playoff games. Well below their regular season dominance.
• It is never too early to start thinking about who will be playing in next year’s Super Bowl. Actually, it is way too early.
HEY REF
Super Dud is done! For all its billing nothing can ruin what was supposed to be “THE” best Super Bowl in years as a team never getting on the bus. Some will correct me, they should know better, and say that I meant “get off the bus” but I must reaffirm my opinion as claiming Denver NEVER GOT ON the bus! Don’t know where they came from but Denver did amass some 60 uniform wearing individuals but forgot to include any resemblance of a professional football team under those freshly shined helmets.
Here at HEY REF we’ll never point fingers and say “told you so” but how many times have you heard that old football mantra that offenses win games and defenses win championships? I’ve got to admit I quit watching before the first quarter was ever over. I have the game, if you want to call it that, on my DVR and did watch the rest of the Bronco slaughter without having to sit through those very boring and utterly ridiculous commercials.
I switched channels and found more suspense and thrilling action on “Wives with Knifes” than I could possibly ever ask for in the New Jersey night lights. Everybody is an expert at this time of the season and giving you reasons why this happened and that happened. But at the end of the day, this year’s game was a showcase of an old fashioned butt-whipping.
To win these games you’ve got to go out, do something special, something odd, something bold then get into the minds of your opponents. It all starts from the opening kickoff and low and behold that’s where Denver went wrong. From the get-go, and no way should Trindon Holliday have stepped out of the end zone as he put the Broncos in a hole before Manning ever got off the sidelines.
The Seahawks were branded as the best defense all season long and if Denver coach John Fox had any smarts about him he should’ve kicked off to begin the game (even though this possibly means kicking again to start the second half) to keep their defense off the field in a holding pattern. You’ve got to get inside the other teams head and this would’ve had everybody wondering what Fox had up his sleeve.
I would’ve had my guy put the ball deep in the endzone and force an average offense led by a second year QB to open up the biggest game in his career, to date, by having to go 80 yards to score. Crazy, I know but these games aren’t won by doing the same ‘ole thing, no you’ve got to innovate and keep the opposition guessing on just what’s the other guys thinking and why are they doing it!!
But at the end of the day Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson didn’t have to do much as they played a complete game. The Seahawks seemed as though they could do no wrong scoring on offense, defense and special teams. Denver came out for the second half knowing their only chance was to shut down Seattle completely for the remainder of the game. But those hopes were quickly dashed as Minnesota cast off Percy Harvin scored with just 12 seconds going off the clock to start quarter number three.
Seattle’s number one defensive show stoppers showed up and showed up big. The best defense all year long proved why and how they got that honor by playing hard every minute of this boring Super Bowl. I can’t list all the things Denver did wrong because they did everything wrong.
So, hail to the champs, enjoy it while you can because history in the NFL has taught us that winning a Super Bowl is easy. The toughest thing to do in today’s NFL is to keep winning championships because of all the money that players will be tempted with in this coming off-season after they won “THE BIG ONE”!
Till next week.....
