THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

There is some conventional wisdom going around that I don’t think is true. “Tell the Truth Monday” for LSU is going to turn into “Tell the Truth Thursday” for me (or Tuesday when I am writing this article).

Conventional Wisdom (CW): Orgeron failed his job interview against Bama because of wasting timeouts on offense due to plays not coming in on time.

Truth: I think it is ridiculous to choose or not choose Orgeron based solely on what happens on the field. The job is bigger than that, and the situation LSU is in now is very different than how it will look in the future.

The truth is that the defense is Aranda’s and he will be gone after this year or next for a head job. The offense will be changed dramatically no matter who is hired. Yet, LSU is trying to succeed under an offense that has not had a decent offensive tackle recruited in years (guards are playing tackle) and a philosophy that cannot be overturned during the season.

The wasted timeouts are disappointing, but Nick Saban is the best college football coach ever. Did you notice Bama wasting timeouts toward the end of the game? I did. It happens. How often does it happen? Does the issue get corrected? The answers to those questions are more important than noticing that they happened.

CW: LSU’s defense did everything they could do against Bama.

Truth: The defense let Bama out of a hole a few times when a 3 and out would have given LSU tremendous field position and a chance to open the offense around midfield. There were at least 3 third and long situations (8 or more yards) that Bama converted by running the football. The defense was tremendous for the first half. They were good in the second half. There were a bunch of missed tackles. I agree with Coach O. The defense did not play as well as it could 60 minutes.

CW: LSU lost to Arkansas the last two years because they let down after losing to Bama.

Truth: LSU has lost to Arkansas for the same reason LSU loses to Bama. LSU is soft up the middle against the run, Arkansas’ offensive scheme matches up well against LSU, the Tigers cannot protect the quarterback in obvious passing down, and LSU cannot just line up and run the ball against everyone. In addition, LSU has had trouble with Arkansas for years, no matter where they fall on the schedule.

Bama took over the game on offense when they stopped messing around and ran right at LSU. Arkansas never messes around, and will challenge LSU up the middle. Arkansas also uses its tight ends well and has a passing game that does just enough to move the chains.

Arkansas knows how to plug run gaps, especially if they don’t have to worry about the pass. Furthermore, the Hogs will sacrifice a bit in the passing game to stop the run. The national media keeps talking about LSU not running against Bama, but they haven’t noticed that LSU can’t run against the Hogs either. LSU could not run against Wisconsin, Auburn, or Bama. Can LSU win if they don’t run for a ton of yards?

LSU did not spread the field to run against Bama. They did not use Guice with Fournette or hardly at all. LSU did not use the jet sweep or much misdirection. LSU will not be able to run on Arkansas if they don’t use those tactics against Arkansas. I don’t care if LSU is focused and ready to play or not.

CW: The Saints finally committed to a running game and that is why they have run well recently.

Truth: The chicken came first, not the egg in this instance. Sean Payton will do something if it is working. He is not going to run the ball, just to have balance in the number of plays run. Also, the Niners run defense is atrocious. They have players running around just doing whatever they want. Do not make any judgements based off that game.

Nevertheless, the offensive line is playing very well, and the offense looks awesome.

If the defense can stay healthy, I suspect they will get better each week. Last weekend was a poor performance that was saved by turnovers. But, as a close observer of the Saints over the past 4 years, I have become an expert on bad defense. I can now recognize the difference between a defense that has no chance of being good and a defense that is playing poorly.

The Saints defense against the Niners weren’t bad because of San Fran making plays. The defense was bad because it broke down mentally (poor play). Sometimes, that is a product of a lack of continuity. Those corrections can be made, and I have hope they will be made.

There is a lot on the line this weekend. The Saints are at the same point they have been the last three years. They have lost their ninth game and finished 7-9 both years. Many predicted 6 or fewer wins for the Saints. It still could happen with a loss at home against Denver and a short week of preparation on the road at Carolina. A win over the Broncos, and the Saints could finish at or above my 8-8 prediction.

As for LSU, it certainly appears as though the first three games of the Orgeron era may be a product of the horrible defenses they faced. It is not hard to forgive the poor offensive performance against Bama, but this offense needs to pass the road test at Arkansas. If they do, it is easy to picture success at home against Florida the next week.

The play on the field for the Saints and Tigers this weekend will have a large impact on the Conventional Wisdom surrounding each program the rest of the season.

HEY REF

BY DENNIS DEARIE,

VETERAN LOUISIANA HIGH SCHOOL REFEREE

Hey Ref 11 10 16

Without a doubt most of us want something, almost anything, to take our attention away from politics, elections, finger pointing, he said/she said, etc., etc. I’ll also do my best to keep this week’s column short and sweet. So, without further ado and if you’re familiar with the writer responsible for this space you know very well there can be just one story worth my attention. And anyone that calls themselves a “FAN OF THE NFL” must also admit to the fact there’s just one story, one important play, one instance during a nationally televised game that warrants our attention and a play we should and must pay very close attention to.

The play is from this past Monday night’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Convicts from Seattle. Right before halftime the Bills lined up for a makeable field goal when CONVICT “A” RICHARD SHERMAN, although being grossly off sides then sprinted toward kicker Dan Carpenter. CONVICT SHERMAN never slowed down before launching himself into the kicker’s knees. As Carpenter rolled on the ground and without a doubt in extreme pain the only action CONVICT SHERMAN displayed was a kind of ho hum, matter of fact, shrug of his shoulders.

CONVICT SHERMAN not once demonstrated any remorse for his flagrant hit that in all actuality could’ve ended another player’s career. The only thing more egregious than CONVICT SHERMAN’S actions on the play was the absolute and total screw-up by the entire officiating crew. Yes, the entire crew has to admit they are all to blame for the fact that CONVICT SHERMAN wasn’t penalized the maximum yardage and ejected from the rest of the game. Then, today without hesitation the NFL should’ve stepped in and ended CONVICT SHERMAN’S season.

We’ve seen this type of dirty play from CONVICT SHERMAN ever since Seattle’s lone Super Bowl victory. Immediately after that game and before CONVICT SHERMAN could exit the playing field he demonstrated his TRUE GANGSTER self in the way he answered questions and his body language yelled “I’M A GANGSTER, I HATE THE WORLD, I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT ON AN NFL PLAYING FIELD. THERE AIN’T SH*T YOU CAN DO TO ME. I JUST HELPED WIN A SUPER BOWL TITLE FOR MY FRANCHISE. YOU CAN’T DOUBT ME, I JUST PROVED IT IN THE BIGGEST, MOST IMPORTANT GAME OF THE YEAR FOR THE LEAGUE, N*GGA”!

What’s the saddest thing about the way I described his actions, words and play? You can’t deny a single thing I said. For the first time in its long history of being televised on commercial television, the National Felon’s League is losing viewership. YES! People are finally getting tired of watching these thugs collect millions of dollars while flipping off any hint of authority by the owners and coaches.

The NFL in its best days never would allow players like CONVICT SHERNAN to remain part of any of the now 32 franchises. And as I wrote earlier the officials are very much to blame for the continued slide of professionalism this once proud league used to demand of all the players, officials, coaches and trainers. I won’t give them an “out” because in “Hey Ref’s” world it’s better to never put on the stripes again then it is to lose command of the CHAIN-GANG where many of these players should remain and never be allowed to wear an NFL uniform again.

The NATIONAL FELON’S LEAGUE will continue to self-destruct because most of the new owners only care about getting billion dollar stadiums and keeping a fat wallet. Guess it’s part of today’s society where professionalism never is expected as long as there’s a demand for tickets and stadiums stay sold out!

Just one little thing I’d like to mention and say why I’m grateful for Donald Trump being elected our next president; Rosie O’Donnell said she’d leave America if he won the election. All I can look forward to is a future United States without Rosie O’Donnell. “Heaven, I’m in Heaven”!

Till next week…
