I know the Saints have played their first preseason game and there is tons of football news. Nevertheless, I have to talk about the NBA and the Cavs.
I am blown away by the whole debate about Kevin Love and his soon to be trade to the Cavs that I have heard among the national media this week. How is this is even a debate? I have heard all the arguments this week questioning Kevin Love and the wisdom of the trade. I still don’t understand the debate.
For the sake of argument, let’s agree that Kevin Love is not as good as his numbers suggest. I don’t hear anyone suggesting he is not an All-Star. So the Cavs just added a 3rd All-Star to their roster, and one of the All-Stars is the best player in the league. Furthermore, Love will play at a position of need for the Cavs.
For the sake of argument, let’s assume that Love is not a great clutch player, and he can’t take over at the end of the game. Does anyone think the Cavs are going to run plays for him at the end of the game? The ball will be in LeBron’s hands, end of story. Love can spot up and knock down shots or offensive rebound. I think we saw the Heat work those options with Chris Bosh and have great success.
For the sake of argument, let’s assume playoff experience is really important. Aren’t the Cavs signing veteran players? LeBron’s playoff experience doesn’t count? How experienced were the Cavs the last time LeBron was on their team and they went to the Finals?
For the sake of argument, let’s say that T-Wolves awful record in Kevin Love’s six years is his fault and a sign of his lack of ability. Does this mean that Love will make the Cavs worse because he is on their team?! If someone believes that, then they are someone not worth debating.
For the sake of argument, we can say Love is a poor defender. He is a great rebounder, which is part of defense. Also, I would argue that most big men with a half defense offensive game are poor defenders. Is Chris Bosh a great defender? He didn’t look like one against the Spurs.
Now, I want anyone who is questioning the decision to trade for Love answer my questions. What position would Wiggins have played on the Cavs with LeBron on the same team? Who is a better fit for the Cavs that the Cavs could have added to their roster? Do you think LeBron James would have made the decision to return to the Cavs if the Cavs were not willing to make this trade? Do you think this wasn’t discussed before LeBron signed?
The Cavs have had an amazing off season and trading for Kevin Love was a no brainer. The T-Wolves did as well as they could do in the trade as well. There doesn’t have to be a winner and a loser in every trade. Some trades are simply win-win.
HEY REF
I can’t figure the NFL owners out most of the time. Especially when they cry about how they’re not making any money and need relief from these massive, multi-million dollar, guaranteed contracts that each and every one of them have signed in recent years. In most cases the driving force behind these obscene player deals can be summed up in one word; ego.
Back when I watched the professional version of the game there were basically just two super stars that fans packed stadiums to see; (1) the quarterback and (2) the coach. In those days quarterbacks were seen as the catalyst holding the team together and the coaches were more or less looked on as the mighty general leading his troops into battle.
Today though it seems owners want to be seen as the power that drives teams to the Promised Land and not the players on the field. Offhand I really can’t recall a single owner’s name from back when
Seems these modern day owners want to be as much a part of the limelight as a Super Bowl MVP.
Owners like our own Tom Benson and Dallas’ Jerry Jones seem more than eager to search out a member of the press as much as a top draft choice. I just feel owners need to stay as far away from the spotlight as possible and leave the sad idol worshiping for the players. But as we all know things never seem to be the way they should be or at least the way we want them to be.
I’ll assure you one thing there’s an owner that just can’t wait for this season to be over. “What? We haven’t even played the first game”! That’s right because as soon as the final game is played and in the books we’ll all be hearing a lot from a guy named Mark Davis. Sound familiar?
Mr. Davis is the owner of the Oakland Raiders and he wants to get his team a new home. Right now there are a few places he’ll be very happy to pack up the suitcases and move to without thinking twice. Los Angeles while one of the largest markets in the country doesn’t look like they’re in the running to land the team again.
After hurricane Katrina Benson flirted with moving the Saints to San Antonio but that move of course never happened. San Antonio’s city officials were and are still upset that a deal couldn’t be worked out and have since courted at least four other teams looking for new surroundings.
Last year, 2013, Davis signed a one-year extension to stay in California for the 2014 season and so far this year has said he won’t make that same mistake again. So, trying to read between the lines it looks as though the Raider nation will be making a move to the southwest and join the Cowboys and Texans in the Lone Star State. That is of course if Jerry Jones will allow it.
On one hand it makes no sense for the NFL not to have a franchise in one of the largest TV markets since it’s with television revenue that allows for the astronomical salaries being paid today.
Yet, it makes sense to have more than one city bid on relocating a team to their city. Owners can and do hold cities hostage if they don’t get what they want. Little things like billion dollar stadiums, tax rebates and a blank check that allows them to name their price all for the honor of having an NFL team in their city.
So, another owner will play a couple state legislatures against each other and laugh all the way to the bank. I shouldn’t get upset if states are willing to sell their souls to the NFL and/or another professional league. Look at what these states and cities will get in return; plenty of service industry jobs.
Are these high paying jobs, washing sheets, waiting tables and parking cars worth millions of taxpayer dollars? Absolutely not!
Till next week… …
