THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Allow me to let my fan hair down and let loose for a moment. What a dump of a weekend! I hate losing to the Falcons, especially when we are the better team. I hate losing to Bama and it would have been SO sweet to have beaten them in a year where we are a.500 team, without most of our top players, and changing coaches.

At the same time, I am completely bummed about the Pelicans and LSU basketball. Not only is this season already a waste, there is little reason for optimism as Zion is the cornerstone of the franchise and cannot stay healthy or in shape. LSU basketball is going to be good, but not as good as they would have been had Adam Miller not torn his ACL.

OK. I am done now. Instead of continuing to wallow, I am going to try and give you some thoughts to ponder and ¨chew on.¨

The LSU coaches, who are going to be looking for new jobs soon, outcoached Nick Saban and his coaching staff. Think about it. Can anyone say that LSU belonged on the field with Alabama? LSU was playing without its best players at receiver, quarterback (yes Myles is better than Max), running back (Emory has not played all year, but he would have been the starter), offensive line (Rosenthal transferred), two best defensive lineman (Maason Smith and Andre Anthony), and almost entire starting secondary.

We all acknowledge that Alabama is better at every position than LSU. Yet, in Tuscaloosa, LSU broke Alabama's streak of scoring 30 or more points at 36 games and held them to only 6 net yards rushing! Despite being minus 2 in turnovers, LSU had multiple opportunities to win the game. A 28 point underdog and LSU lost by 6. I am not speaking of a moral victory. I am simply saying that Orgeron’s staff outcoached Saban’s, and there can be no argument to the contrary.

There are many consequences of this fact. First, it is hard to understand why LSU’s defense has not challenged more offenses with pressure. I can understand going into the year believing that the defensive line was good enough where the Tigers did not need to bring extra defenders to pressure the quarterback. That idea could have been thrown out after one half of the UCLA game. It should also be pointed out that Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, and Brett Venables regularly have great defensive talent, great defenses and bring pressure to disrupt offenses. It is hard to understand what took LSU so long.

Second, Saban is still the best college football coach in the history of the game. Yet, from time to time his teams play below their capability. Maybe, just maybe, it is human nature to let down. Maybe, just thinking, in physically demanding sports that require team chemistry it is not possible to always be at your best. There are games where something is just off.

I know it happens in professional football, basketball, baseball and other sports. It happened to the Saints against Atlanta. But the Saints were not the only victims this weekend, it happened across the NFL. It was one of those weeks.

Unfortunately, I think there is another reality with the Saints. They are just not that good, and that is why Sean Payton and the coaches deserve even more credit. At times, they have played so well and coached so well that we think this team can be pretty good. The reality remains that the defense is great against the run, but simply above average overall. Offensively, the Saints lack playmakers and the offensive line is not as dominant as they are billed.

As frustrating as it is as a fan, we must continue to remind ourselves that teams that are special are special for a reason. Greatness is rare. The Saints are a slightly above average team. As they say, you are what your record says you are.
