THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Can Xavier Pinson really make that big of a difference? Apparently so. Outside of the final score, the tangible difference is hard to detect.

It is not that LSU suddenly runs better offense, but Pinson can certainly bail out some possessions. The turnovers have been a problem all year, and it was highlighted during the losing skid. Against Texas A&M, LSU still turned the ball over way too much.

For a team with decent size and good athleticism it has been astonishing how poorly LSU has done rebounding, especially on offense. Pinson is not a great rebounder. So how did Pinson’s return lead to a 20 point turn around? LSU has been losing by 10 recently, and Tuesday night the Tigers won by 8.

The answer is that Pinson allows other guys to play where they are comfortable. As a result, the other players are able to perform closer to their ability. The other differences are intangible and tuning into a Will Wade press conference will give better answers than I can. The point is that the difference is real. It is not imagined. The rough patch was tough to watch, but there is every reason to believe that LSU can get back in position to receive a strong seed in the NCAA Tournament.

As expected, the Saints hired Dennis Allen to take over for Sean Payton. In reality, who can blame them? Sean Payton left the team in a solid position. Dennis Allen has turned the defense from a weakness to the strength of the team. He has head coaching experience in the NFL. In Payton’s press conference he talked about being “in concert” with ownership and management. The strength of this organization since Payton arrived is the alignment of the organization, so keeping that alignment should be the priority.

I fully expect Dennis Allen to keep the staff in place as much as possible. Pete Carmichael will likely be the offensive coordinator. All of this is understandable, but there should be some caution. In his press conference, Dennis Allen talked about continuing the success, yet being himself. That is important. Somehow, he has to do something to keep the foundation, but to bring some fresh ideas to the team.

Certainly, the defense will stay under his influence. Consequently, there should be some changes on offense. Carmichael has run Payton’s offense for years, but he will need to bring something new to the table. Otherwise, the team will have a tough time transitioning away from the Payton era and it will feel like there is a lack of leadership.

The tables are set for the Saints to continue this era of success. The division is weak and the roster is in decent shape. As always, there will be a number of key free agent decisions that need to be made, players need to make better decisions than Kamara made in Vegas, and the draft is going to be the key as always.

Very few organizations are able to sustain success from one head coach to another. Usually, it takes one transitional coach before the team finds the next coach for the long term. I am hoping that Dennis Allen can avoid those pitfalls, and be the next head coach for the Saints for years to come.
