THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

With LSU taking a bye week and the Saints taking care of business, this is the perfect week to look forward to basketball season. I do not apologize for talking basketball during football season either.

I cannot hide my excitement for this basketball season. I fully expect the Pelicans and the Tigers to make the postseason. What is even better, is they should be fun to watch win or lose.

Starting with LSU, I love their mixture of players. They have super quick guards and big guards. They have can play with a big or small lineup. They have length inside and some strength inside. They have experience and talented youth.

I think the biggest challenge for the coaching staff will be figuring out this team’s identity, determining roles, and which combinations work the best because they have so many options. As a result, this could be a team that shows flashes of brilliance early in the year, but also sputters at times.

In situations like this it will be imperative that O'Bryant, Hickey, Stringer, and Coleman provide steady leadership through the first half of the season. Hopefully, those four understand that the success of last year’s team was based off their tenacity and toughness. With the added depth, this year’s team should be able to provide more consistent effort. Yet, the mentality should not change from last year’s team that scratched and clawed their way to many wins.

Meanwhile the Pelicans don't have as many options as the Tigers. The Pelicans are small and will have to win playing to their strength while hiding their weakness. Teams like this are usually fun to watch, though. The Pelicans should also be tenacious, aggressive on defense, and scoring should come naturally.

Hopefully, the Eric Gordon saga is over and he is set to have a big year. If so, the Pelicans have All-Star talent at three positions: point guard, shooting guard, and power forward. Tyreke Evans should explode as a sixth man, and Rivers and Roberts provide great depth as fourth and fifth guards. Meanwhile, Ryan Anderson may be the most productive player on the team as he does it all while stretching the defense.

The biggest challenge for the coaching staff will be keeping Anthony Davis fresh and finding somebody to bang inside. I have always liked Monty Williams and what he has brought to New Orleans. Without the immediate success, Williams and Demps have built a very good product. I can't wait to see how the Pelicans come together this year.

This week, the common theme from those who cover LSU football is to try to tamper down the doom and gloom LSU football fans are feeling. I am not sure my perspective is optimistic or pessimistic, but I know better than to try to talk sense into those fans. It is hard to feel optimistic about LSU with two losses heading into Alabama and Texas A&M. The good news is LSU fans will feel just fine if the team bounces back and competes like they did earlier in the season. But if they don’t… if LSU is in a down year and loses four games this year, basketball is actually something to look forward to this year.

HEY REF

Say it ain’t so! The Shreveport Times broke a developing story Tuesday involving possible cheating by the coaching staff at Destrehan High School. The allegations were brought by South Lafourche High in what’s being described as a “Sportsmanship Issue” at the present time by LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson.

Seems the investigation centers around the way Destrehan’s coaching staff were using a film-sharing program called “HUDL”. In their game last Friday night Destrehan destroyed South Lafourche by a score of 49 – 24. With the win Destrehan stays unbeaten in both its regular season and district and is ranked No. 3 by the Advocate.

South Lafourche contends that certain areas of the computer program used by schools to scout opponents and review their own players were “hacked” into and that Destrehan had no right to be on certain areas of the film sharing network. Henderson admits that these charges are something new to the LHSAA as never before has one school brought these types of charges against another.

The “official” word right now is a “no comment” from all parties until things can be ironed out and if it can be proven that Destrehan gained an unfair advantage last Friday night. Henderson isn’t sure what and if any penalties will be handed down if the allegations are true. The LHSAA handbook hasn’t any guidelines in such a case as Henderson admits this is a first for the state wide association.

I can only hope that when all is said and done that no “crime” has been committed and this is but a very isolated instance. But I do fear that since we’re living in a “win at all cost” society it’s just a matter of time before whole scale cheating runs rampant at the high school level. I mean look at all the instances coming to light when the subject turns to recruiting at the high school level.

Coaches are subjected to extreme amounts of pressure to either turn a program around as quickly as possible or to continue winning titles that maybe some have their “hands in the cookie jar” to put it lightly. This official has nothing but the utmost respect for all coaches and when this investigation is over we just have a slight misunderstanding of the rules.

As you know this writer believes in coaches getting game tapes or films to the crews that work their games for the sole purpose of finding ways to eliminate errors by the officiating crew. I will never say that we don’t make mistakes because we do. Sometime we make big ones and I’ve blown some biggins before. But I’ll be the first to approach a coach to ask that I be given a copy of the game to see where I went wrong or where I’m vindicated and got the call right.

And that’s where I’m leaving my opinion at this week. If wrong was done then let the powers that be hand out justice. Here’s to level headed thinking and everybody take a deep breath because what comes out of this one incidence could make or break a team’s season and that would mean the kids would suffer if adults were so consumed with winning that they went across all lines of doing the right thing!!!

Till next week… …
