THE WIZARDRY OF OS

For years, we lived under the assumption that college football was great because every game mattered. One loss and a team was done for the ultimate prize.

Of course, LSU did win a BCS championship with 2 losses (though none of those were in regular time as Les Miles pointed out). And then there is Bama who showed multiple times that one loss could be overcome to win championships.

Still, we have entered a new era. 12 teams will make the playoffs and there will certainly be teams that qualify with 2 losses. For the first time, college football had an upset Saturday with unranked teams beating highly ranked teams, and those highly ranked teams still have a chance to play for a championship.

Therefore, each game does not have the importance we have touted as the thing that makes college football great. Has that ruined the matchup of #2 Ohio State and #3 Oregon this weekend. Are you going to watch? Are both teams going to compete as hard as they can? Yes and yes.

What I wonder is if teams will be more susceptible to upsets knowing they can recover? As a fan of college football, I would have no problem if more upsets is an unintended consequence of the new format.

I am going to immediately discard that possibility, though. Ranked teams will be upset because they are not as good as we thought just like always. Also, it is college football and the regular season is a grind.

The format of the playoffs help keep the integrity of the regular season. We are used to seeing teams struggle to the end of their 12 or 13 game season, then use the extended time off to get healthy for their bowl game. The 5-12 seeds will get a break, but the top four teams with the bye will get the extended rest. So, the most serious contenders will have earned a huge advantage making games like #2 Ohio State and #3 Oregon is extremely important.

The 5-8 seeds will get home games which we know makes a huge difference in college football. The part that we will have to see is whether the time of year will impact the actual advantage. College football fans, especially students, leave campus for Christmas. Will Penn State be able to draw 105,000 to Happy Valley five days before Christmas when students are at break? When the stadium is twice as big as the population of the college town, what will these environments actually look like?

Then there is the opt out factor. Will the playoffs deter players from opting out? Or will having a chance to play for a national championship, even with a long shot, be enough for players to finish out their career?

I am very confident that the extended playoff bracket is the correct step for the sport, and look forward to seeing how all of this plays out.
