THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

The more things change the more they stay the same. That is how Tiger fans feel and we are tired of feeling this way. Tiger fans are tired of the feeling that we could have a championship program if the offense was above average. It is the similar feeling Saints fans have in reverse as Saints fans have known the Saints could do great things if the defense was just decent.

I know LSU fans are tired of an offense that has to scratch and claw for every yard. It is especially frustrating when things seemed to be going in the right direction after the Georgia game and the last three games of offense have had about 3 drives worth remembering.

The offense has lost its confidence and identity (I wrote this before Orgeron said it at its press conference on Monday for the record). LSU has been at its best on offense when they are willing to play 11 on 11 (run the quarterback), throw on first down, and are able to stay away from negative plays.

Everyone has talked about the offensive line, but there are very few football teams that can sustain drives without playmakers. Running backs and receivers that make yards when the play isn’t executed particularly well are what Georgia and Alabama have that nobody else has in the SEC, which is crazy to think about. For all the great defensive lineman across the league, name 5 playmakers on offense in the SEC that don’t play for Alabama and Georgia. And guys who make plays against weak non conference teams or poor defenses like Ole Miss don’t count. I can’t come up with five on the other SEC teams that match Jerry Juedy, Henry Ruggs, Najee Harris, Josh Jacobs, Mecole Hardman, Elijah Holyfield, and D’Andre Swift.

Of course, LSU is supposed to have those players with those skills. I think Jefferson, Edwards-Helaire, and Brossette have played with great effort, and intelligence this year. They are not game breakers, though. Terrace Marshall and Ja’Marr Chase have that ability and it is the time of the year where they need to start showing it on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, there is not much I can say about the Saints. I hope everyone appreciates what we are watching because it is beautiful, efficient, and rare.

Let’s talk some basketball.

The Pelicans usually start the season slowly and injury plagued. The only difference this year was they got off to a fast start before the injuries started.

When healthy, the Pelicans look to be similar to what they were last year, which is pretty good. As is often the case, NBA analysts and insiders weren’t fans of the offseason moves because it is all about “names” in the NBA. Elfrid Payton or Rondo? Rondo of course. Keep Cousins or let him go and sign Julius Randle? Cousins has the name, but Randle might be 6th Man of the Year and is basically a starter.

In reality, the Pelicans are able to play the style they want to play better with Randle than Cousins. There is more flexibility in their lineup. Davis and Holiday are great players and the Pels are fun to watch in what has turned into an offensive league. Of course, the Pels aren’t going to challenge the Warriors, but that puts the Pelicans in the same boat as the rest of the league.

Excitingly, LSU basketball is going to live up the the preseason hype. Naz Reid is as talented as we were told. Ja’Vonte Smart is what I coached against for four years, and I am so glad he is finally on my side. Emmitt Williams is a joy to watch as a coach because he plays with great effort and emotion. It doesn’t hurt that he is very talented.

It is a great sign when Marlon Taylor, Bigby-Williams, and Darius Days the 7-9 players in the rotation. Especially when you consider all three of them would have started in recent years.

Skylar Mays is a very skilled player who has turned into a pretty good defender. Daryl Edwards is the type of experienced player you want to have when counting on the freshmen LSU has on the roster.

The player that has the biggest adjustment is Tremont Waters. Last year he could take bad shots and be risky with the ball at times. This year he doesn’t need to force shots, and needs to shoot a higher percentage than last year. He must take care of the ball.

He has struggled with these adjustments at times, but that is to be expected. He has forced shots, had too many turnovers, and is just not finishing as we expect. That happens when your opportunities are lessened. Suddenly the shots have a little more meaning. I fully expect him to settle down and find a groove. He is playing excellent defense, and is still the type of game changer when the game is on the line that the LSU football teams lacks on offense.

I look forward to seeing how Will Wade will grow this team. I know there will be many offensive and defensive wrinkles to come as LSU will be one of the top teams in the SEC.
