ON THE AIR!: Denham Springs HS Football radio broadcasts

Plaquemine HS Football radio broadcasts

St. John HS Football radio broadcasts

LAST MINUTE SWITCHEROO

Last week, we changed our Plaquemine area broadcast from the St. John game to the Plaquemine game. This was necessitated by a number of reasons, the biggest factor being that we were scheduled to broadcast from the PA room at ACHS. This would be a prescription for disaster.—JB and Baco’s voices would have been drowned out, leading to an unintelligible broadcast. For competitive reasons, we chose to wait until just a couple of hours before kickoff to make the announcement

To steal and modify a line from Graig “Puff” (no relation) Nettles, a terrific third baseman for the NY Yankees back in the day,”When I was a child, I thought I’d like to either be a sportscaster or work in the circus. I’m lucky. I got to do both”

We will make up the missed St. John game sometime in the next 3 weeks.

ACCOUNTABILITY

I apologize for the technical difficulties we had in our pre-game show (Sport N Center Jackets Warmup) on our Denham Springs HS broadcast. We had trouble figuring out how to make a 3 way conference call work. Then, we played the wrong first half of our interview with Coach Nettles. Unfortunately, our pre-game show was foreshadowing of things to come for Denham fans

So, both the Jackets and Jon Fine Productions have made some adjustments. Hopefully, we’ll both fare a lot better this Friday night.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

What is the lesson from this week in football? Be wary of the quality underdog with something to prove at the end of a tough stretch of games for the favorite.

It happened to Georgia with Missouri, Stanford at Utah, and the Saints at New England to name a few examples. As a Saints fan that grew up watching the Saints lose to the Niners at the end of the game because they couldn't get one more first down, I was sick at the ending of Sunday’s game with flashbacks.

While the ending is what has been talked about all week, I am stuck on the bigger picture. I couldn't believe the lack of respect the Patriots were receiving all week from the national media. The Pats used that to turn in their strongest performance of the year. Don’t believe any coach or player that says they don’t use disrespect from public and media as motivation. Coach Miles and LSU proved that this week when they spent their whole postgame talking about the message they were out to prove after last year’s loss to Florida.

For LSU, the challenge at the end of a tough stretch of games is the Ole Miss game. The Rebels have a lot to prove, a ton of confidence from last year’s game, and the game at home. But, Ole Miss is at the back end of a tough stretch and banged up as well.

The LSU defense has shown improvement, but how much of that is the competition and facing more traditional teams that huddle? I am not sure, but I am very confident in saying this week the Tigers will need the offense to get back in high gear. I believe that even a solid defensive effort will see Ole Miss score in the twenties.

Back to the Saints, I think we saw a number of rare occurrences against the Pats. Brees missed two open passes that would have gone for touchdowns (one to Toon and one to Sproles). The offense became overly reliant on Jimmy Graham.

Coach Payton played it too safe, which he never does. I can still remember Payton calling a reverse or multiple passes at the end of games trying to get one more first down a few years ago. Of course when that didn’t he was criticized for being too daring. Such is the life of a coach. The good news is Payton evaluates, moves on, and doesn’t let it affect him.

As for Sunday, the defense made him look bad by playing poorly on the last drive. A couple of years ago, I proposed that defenses in the position the Saints were in have no good reason to have a linebacker on the field in coverage. People are forgetting that the Patriots had two open receivers inside the five on the drive as they were able to get a receiver matched against a linebacker. Either way, the defense needs to be better than that… and officials need to call holding.

Meanwhile the bye comes at a perfect time. The offensive coaches will have time to reset themselves. They will have the film and stats, but to as an observer I hope they make the following conclusions.

Robinson needs more carries, especially in the red zone. Also, the play action "shot" plays will be more effective with Robinson in the game. If Ingram gets healthy, I hope he doesn’t take playing time from Robinson.

Colton is not a fade receiver. No more fades to Colston on either shoulder.

The offensive line and run game are coming around. Stick with it.

Toon and Stills are ready. Drew needs to give them more chances with Colston, Sproles, and Graham getting so much attention. At the same time, I look forward to Lance Moore’s return.

Lastly, I was going to express my thoughts on the lack of fans and enthusiasm at Tiger Stadium, but the Saints collapse changed my plan. I think I’ll put those thoughts in my back pocket till next week with the Saints having a bye and LSU taking on Furman.

HEY REF

I know a lot of people are wondering what really happened last week during the third quarter of the St. Paul-Mandeville game played in Covington. The best thing I can do is do what everybody should be doing and that is let the courts sort the mess out. Never in my entire career have I seen officials arrested while trying to do their jobs. Having people other than those that are directly involved with the game on the sidelines is in my opinion just trouble.

There’s no need for “fans” to be crowded along either side. It’s hard enough to keep the sidelines clean without those wanting to feel important to be in our way while the game is being played. Our attention should be directed to the playing field to insure the safety of the players. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve had to instruct the players and coaches to get back in case a play comes their way. But it seems each game more and more people are finding their way onto the sidelines.

The sidelines are not a place for fans to congregate while we’re trying to get the game played in a safe manner. We can all remember Saint’s coach Sean Peyton getting hit and breaking a leg during a game and he was very familiar with what goes on during the games. But even with all his years and experience along the sidelines he wasn’t able to escape a severe injury. So fans stay in the stands and leave it to those that are charged with running the games to do their jobs.

One thing I do want to comment on is the disgusting new trend by some football players to wear hair so long that it covers either their names or numbers. The NFL has uniform police at every game. They are the ones leveling fines on players for such ridiculous things as wearing improper socks or the wrong color of shoestrings. The word uniform means likeness as in all wearing the same color jersey, pants and shoes.

This past week Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall reported that the NFL has fined him $10,500.00 for wearing green shoes in an Oct. 10th game against the New York Giants. Marshall had said the shoes were his way to attract attention to Mental Health Awareness Week. Marshall has been treated for a personality disorder in the past. This nonsense of leveling such a hefty fine has done more than raise questions as to the color of shoes but has done exactly what he wanted and that is raising awareness for those suffering from mental illnesses.

The NFL needs to pick its battles more carefully than this since it had the desired outcome Marshall was hoping for and a mere ten grand is like nickels and dimes to us. This disgusting trend of wearing your hair almost to your knees has now infiltrated the college game. I’ve noticed some high school players donning this “new” hair style.

Call me old fashion if you must but I feel this new hair style shows a true disrespect not only for the game but to the uniform. I just question those that say the officials must have short hair that doesn’t touch the ears, stays off the collar and no facial hair so that they look professional.

Just want to end this week’s column with a simple question “How fast will fans complain if they see the refs with hair down to their waist”?

Till next week… …
