THE WIZARDRY OF OS
In a quarterback driven league, the NFC South, has a void at the position now that Brady has retired.
I have a tough time putting quarterbacks in a specific order, but I have no problem placing them in tiers. The top tier is clearly, Rodgers, Mahomes, Wilson, J. Smith, and I will say it
Burrow. The next tier is Stafford, Herbert, Murray, Prescott, and Carr. Pausing right here, I will point out that I am a third of the way through the starting quarterbacks and there is not one representative from the NFC South as it is currently constructed.
The third tier has Jackson, Cousins, Jones, Hurts, Tannehill, and finally, Matt Ryan representing the NFC South. The top quarterback in this division is around the 15th best quarterback in the league, and he is on the tail end of his career.
The next tier has guys like Bridgewater, Garoppolo, Goff, and Jameis Winston among others. If Winston had played the whole year, he may have moved into the third tier, but we did not see enough. Since the Saints won when Taysom Hill started, I will include him in this tier, but even as I type it, I know that is not the case.
The final tier includes Sam Darnold and whoever would be considered Tampa Bay’s starter as of today, presumably Kyle Trask.
Every division has a quarterback in the first two tiers except for the South. I know the Saints have a better roster than the Falcons and Hill or Winston is as good as Ryan, so the Saints would be the favorite to win the South next year.
Of course, there will be many changes between now and then. The Saints will have a new coach, and my major concern is that Tampa Bay gets Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Deshaun Watson.
I think the rest of the division is stuck. The Saints do not have the draft capital or cap room to get one of the big names. Carolina is not attractive to any of the big names either. Due to Matt Ryan’s contract, Atlanta is stuck with Matt Ryan. The draft does not have an immediate answer either. So the only team that can really make a move is Tampa Bay. If they are able to pull it off, then the division is theirs to have again. If not, Who Dat!
