I love the NFL draft. I am slightly embarrassed to admit it because I know it is similar to Signing Day in how you can't truly assess the impact a draft until a couple of years down the road.
One of the reasons I have loved the draft in the past has been the New York crowd. I love it when the fans start chanting for one player and then it is announced, "the Jets select Jeff Lageman," and the crowd cries out in despair. That is great theater!
Consequently, I wonder if the Chicago crowd will bring the same passion. On the other hand, I look forward to the day the draft makes its way to New Orleans.
Beyond the fun of the fan reactions in the first round, I think the NFL is a little slow to realize yet another source of entertainment and revenue. Fans like me, would be all over the late round and free agent signing period following the draft. The 48 hours after the draft is the college recruiting season. I am sure there are plenty of fans like me who watch the early rounds for the entertainment, but watch the later rounds to gain knowledge about lesser known players who are drafted. Unfortunately, the draft coverage is usually still focused on over covering the early rounds.
As for the selections, the general consensus is that the Saints are feeling a greater sense of urgency with this draft then recent years. Keeping that in mind, here is what I think happens this weekend regarding the Saints.
1. I think the Saints stay where they are in the first round and pick either an offensive lineman or pass rusher depending on the best player available. Odds are that player will be a pass rusher, but so many of them are showing off the field issues, the Saints might be inclined to pass on the top names. I wouldn't blame them since they need immediate help at the position, and they cannot risk choosing a player that will be suspended for games due to drug violations.
2. I think there is a high possibility the Saints trade from the 31st spot. My guess is they trade out of the first round with a team that targets a player on Thursday night.
3. The rest of the draft the Saints will be active using their extra picks to trade up or down as they see players they are targeting become available.
4. It won't be long before the Saints pick a wide receiver. I expect that to happen in the second round, if they hold their water that long.
5. I expect the Saints to pick multiple linebackers, offensive linemen, and cornerbacks.
6. I hope they don't waste a pick on a quarterback for two reasons. First, if that quarterback plays, this season is a wash anyway. Second, a young quarterback is when you can make your move in the NFL these days because the first contract for a quarterback is very light on the salary cap. Look at the Colts, 49ers, and Seahawks. I don't want the Saints wasting their "cheap" quarterback years when they are going to play Bree's anyway.
7. I am very confident the Saints will draft an athletic tight end hoping to find the next Jimmy Graham at some point.
8. As always, with the Saints, the free agent selections will be just as interesting as the draft selections.
The last couple of years, I have tried to give the Saints the benefit of the doubt, but after last year I am concerned. At the time, it seemed like a bunch of bizarre selections and it turned out be the worst draft of the Loomis/Payton era. The Saints must make better decisions this year or the Drew Brees era will end as a wasted opportunity.

Is there any other story that needs my attention other than La’el Collins possible involvement in the shooting death of Brittney Mills? My daughter questioned me today asking “why are the police doing this just two days before the NFL Draft”? She thinks as many others do in the Tiger Nation that the police are doing this on a personal level.
My answer to her was simple; I asked if she’s ever heard the name of a former New England Patriot player named Aaron Hernandez? No one would ever think he’d be involved in a murder yet he’s on trial right now. I asked if she heard of a former Carolina player that had his girlfriend shot and killed a very few short years ago.
One of my favorite programs is “The first 48” on A & E. It deals with homicide detectives as they try to get a lead within the first 48 hours of a murder because without getting any leads within that time frame cuts investigator’s chances of solving the crime by 50%. I went on and said that just because they want to talk to him in no way implicates him in the crime.
The only reason for the authorities request to interview Collins is the fact that he may have some information as to who is involved. By them not going to Chicago and bringing him back to Baton Rouge prior to the draft makes me think he’s not involved. Collins may have heard something or may have been told something but everyone should just cooperate and get whoever did the killing off the streets and in jail. What amazes me during these investigations is how some of these suspects act shocked that they would even be asked anything about a particular crime.
Many of these criminals think the police must’ve just looked into a crystal ball and plucked them off the streets. The fact that the police want to sit down with Collins leads me to believe he may know something. He might know who fired the gun or who participated in the murder or he could not know anything. Everyone should just wait and let the professionals do their jobs.
One thing is certain; if he is involved we shouldn’t be surprised at all. Many of these athletes have been put on a pedestal for years and some are treated as gods. They live the good life and many feel they are above suspicion. They’ve been adored by fans since their high school days and rarely are they treated like common individuals.
But we need to understand that they are just ordinary people and have the very same demons we all have. Many can’t face reality and today’s society needs heroes in the worst way. I’ll close this week’s column by asking a question “Mr. Collins if you do know something about this murder are you prepared to do the right thing and cooperate with investigators”?
For all the little kids out there that see you as a hero Mr. Collins please do the right thing and answer every question that’ll be asked of you. There are more places other than a playing field where young kids need to see their heroes doing the right thing.
Till next week…
