THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Saturday was so close to being the perfect night before it turned into a nightmare. First Notre Dame continued to be blessed at home, and then LSU fell apart in the last minutes.
Before I get to LSU, the biggest decision LSU fans have now is whether to support the SEC in their quest for the 7th National Championship in a row. Right now it is Bama or bust. Personally, I have decided I would rather a team from another league win it than Alabama win back to back years and 3 of the last 4 years.
So that begs the question, "Who should we root for to win it all?" Great question, without a great answer. Really is comes down to the process of elimination. Obviously, I can't pull for Notre Dame. That goes without saying. I respect Oregon, but I can't go there either. I am not sure why, but I probably am jealous of their offense. So that leaves Kansas State. The Wildcats and Central have a lot in common, and I like what Bill Snyder has done. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel that I am not going to enjoy Bowl season if I am pinning my hopes on Kansas State beating Alabama.
As for the Tigers, it is pointless to wallow in the self-inflicted gambles that did not pay off. Sometimes things don’t work out. Instead, I want to focus on the offense that showed signs of returning to the 21st century.
I really enjoyed seeing LSU get running backs matched with linebackers in the passing game and have success. The pass to Spencer Ware that went for a big gain was very similar to the route Darren Sproles scored on against the Broncos. LSU has many skill players that can take advantage of those match-ups, and I hope we continue to see that.
Of course, the best development was the passing game in general. Once the coaches decided to trust the offensive line and quarterback enough to send 3-4 receivers out in routes, we saw efficiency and production in the passing game that we haven’t seen in years.
Now that the national championship is out of the picture for the first time in over a year, I am hoping the offense will be allowed to stretch and progress. We have only seen it for one half of one game, but I now have hope that we may become an offense that can score touchdown against the best defenses in the SEC, which is what it will take to get back in the national championship picture next year.
Lastly, congratulations to Disctrict 4-5A for having five of the six teams qualify for the playoffs.
HEY REF
O. K. Let me say it again “The games are 60 minutes long”! To those Tiger fans that are trying their best to make something good out of a bad situation, Alabama won the game. That’s all that counts. You don’t get any points for being close or for leading for 59 of the 60 minutes.
I will though give credit where credit is due; LSU had Little Nicky’s number except for the final minute. Each time a game ends the way this year’s game did people begin to double guess the coaches. And I will also but only to ask “why didn’t you send the whole defense at Bama on first or second down on the final drive?
I mean they had their backs to their goal line and a huge blitz was indeed the call that should’ve been made. But, alas, I’m just like any other football fan, always thinking for the coaches and not accepting the fact Les Miles was outcoached AGAIN!
In what I’ve called “The Big Present; part 2” after last year’s Championship Game where Les gave Bama a National Title he once again has given till it hurts. Or maybe that should till WE hurt. I still can’t understand why he wasn’t run out of town after last year’s final game. This guy is getting a huge multi-million dollar salary you’d think he’d take a few classes on “How to win the Big One”.
Bama is forking over 5 MILLION A YEAR to Little Nicky. That is degusting and so is ANY million dollar salary no matter how good a coach is. LSU cries they don’t have any cash to repair classrooms or to give raises to other employees yet they don’t hesitate to cough up millions for coaches.
Everybody says the Athletic Dept. raises those funds to pay their coaches. But I ask “is the university a sports entity or is it a place of higher learning”? If they allow one dept. to pay their own then what’s to stop other depts. From opening up the checkbook and pay their people without putting anything in the “Kitty” to run this institution of LEARNING?
Let me save some space for the beginning of High School Football Playoffs that start Friday night. In 5A we’ve got 6 local teams going for the gold. Central #4 and Catholic #5 are having great seasons. Catholic has come back strong after a couple lean years.
Other local 5A schools in the metro area are Scotlandville, Zachary, Live Oak and Denham Springs. Last year the Yellow Jackets were ranked #32 and were pared against #1 seed St. Paul. They pulled off one of the biggest upsets of all time in High School history. This year they face former #1 ranked West Monroe from northeast Louisiana.
Even though I’m a ’74 graduate of West Monroe I’m hoping for a repeat upset from Coach Dru Nettles’ Jackets. I’m “old” school and I hate to have high schools recruit kids from all over the south just to play a sport so grown-ups can feel their lives have meaning.
Anything can happen, good luck to all the local schools, players and coaches. With that many teams in the 5A tournament it’s gonna be interesting to see just how far football has come in south Louisiana.
Till next week… …
