THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Entering the 2013 football season I thought LSU would go 10-2. After the TCU game, I remember writing that I thought LSU would still go 10-2. But I thought they had they could be really dangerous considering how well they performed against TCU despite many glaring mistakes. That meant the Tigers could be a scary good team if they learned to clean up those errors.

Unfortunately, the Tigers have been an error prone team in the biggest games. A mixture of forced and unforced errors against Georgia, Ole Miss, and Alabama were contributing factors in all three losses.

This week LSU avoided the egregious errors that either prevented scores or led to scores for the opponent in the three losses. Maybe it was the right matchup at the right time. Maybe A&M played poorly missing many opportunities early in the game that would have led to the game being played differently had the Aggies made those plays. Or maybe, the young Tigers are finally figuring out what it takes in the SEC.

Who knows? My guess is the LSU coaches don’t even know for sure. Most Tiger fans are trying to figure out if this type of performance can be expected against Arkansas and in the bowl game. I have been going back and forth writing and rewriting this paragraph with my best guess, but I can’t decide. I guess we all will just have to watch.

Speaking of watching, The Saints games for the rest of the year are going to be very interesting to watch. Almost too interesting. After the Jets game, the hope was that the Saints would make it through the difficult patch of four games before the final stretch of games was a bit lighter. Now, there is no let up in the schedule.

Carolina is the team that everyone is talking about and the Saints have them twice. The Rams are quietly lingering around.500, in the playoff hunt, and will have the Saints at home. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has somehow survived 100 knockout blows and is now the team “nobody wants to play.”

I know the Sunday game at Seattle is going to be hyped as the game to decide the top seed in the NFC, but I don’t think that is totally true. If Seattle wins, I think they will take the top seed considering their schedule the rest of the way. But if the Saints win, they still have a lot of hurdles to climb.

The most important task for the Saints is just winning the division. The NFL has changed 100 rules including overtime in the past few years, but they still haven’t changed the worst one. The fact that wild card teams go on the road to play division champions despite records is ludicrous. At this rate, the Panthers and Saints will probably win between 11 and 13 games each. One of them will have a first round bye, while the other team is going to play a first round game on the road. That is a bad system.

While you are watching the Saints Sunday night, pull super hard for a win not for the top seed, but to stay a game ahead of the Panthers.
