THE WIZARDRY OF OS

What do National Signing Day and the Old Gray Mare have in common? That’s right. They ain’t what they used to be.

With the early signing day for college football in December, the first Wednesday in February is no longer a huge event. That being said, by the time you read this LSU will know if they will top off a great recruiting class with a couple players that could make an immediate impact or not.

While LSU loses a huge number of players on defense, they have a number of players ready to step in on the defensive line and in the secondary. Linebacker on the other hand is a major concern. Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen are headed to the NFL. Donte Starks was a freshman this year who got eligible late and now is suspended indefinitely. Needless to say, LSU is very thin at inside linebacker.

Damone Clark and Micah Baskerville are the veterans on the roster who LSU will turn to first, but after that true freshmen that aren’t on campus yet will be called on to play immediately. We saw what happened at Alabama this year when true freshmen had to start at inside linebacker. I don’t know what is available in the transfer portal, but I suspect LSU will be on the lookout for an inside linebacker.

Hopefully, LSU was able to pull an upset and get Jordan Burch to sign. If not, that is another position LSU will most likely be looking for help in the transfer portal. So, if LSU doesn’t get lucky on signing day, don’t fret too much. The Tigers could get just as much bang for their buck (probably a bad choice of words) if after spring practice they find an inside linebacker, center or defensive end that can step in and contribute.

Meanwhile, the LSU basketball has somehow put themselves in the same position they were last year at this time. They are in position to be anywhere from a 3-8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The SEC regular season championship is a real possibility. Here is how I think they could get it done.

If you have watched any of their games recently, you can see that the Tigers have a voracious appetite for offensive rebounds. That effort alone allows a team to be consistent over long stretches of time and game to game. At some point, though, LSU is going to have to make outside shots. Watford, Smart, Days, and Hyatt are shooting under 30% from three point range. If I could pick one to get hot down the stretch it would be Days because of the position that guards him. If he makes outside shots, the floor will be stretched for Smart and Mays to drive and make plays.

Turnovers were a huge problem early in the year and while they are coming down, LSU needs to be better in this area in key situations. There is no reason they can’t improve when you consider that in every lineup LSU has 5 players that can handle the ball on the perimeter. It is simply a matter of decision making.

I don’t see a scenario where this basketball team becomes dominant. They don’t have the depth or Player of the Year candidate to be dominant. That doesn’t mean they can’t sustain their success and make a run in the postseason. It does mean they will continue to play close games. As a result, LSU has to be a team that gets big stops and big scores late in games.

When Charles Manning comes back I like the prospect of the size and agility LSU can put on the court late in games. LSU will be able to switch screens and contest jump shots.

On offense, LSU doesn’t have one player to simply give the ball and get out the way. Mays is the closest, but that is asking a little much of him. LSU does have the ability to create and find mismatches though, especially with Watford. Regardless, LSU will continue to crash the boards on misses late and sometimes that is the best offense anyway.

Coming off a fabulous football season, I am excited to see this basketball team continue to develop down the stretch. Hopefully, we can enjoy this team through March without any drama like last year. With baseball starting next week, and looking promising as well, it is a great time to be a Tiger fan.

HEY REF

Is it PORNO or ENTERTAINMENT? I know you’re probably saying to yourself that “Hey Ref” has finally gone off the deep end. If you’ll give me just a few minutes I’ll explain why I’m a bit confused

So, I’ll start off by saying

What can I add or say that hasn’t been said when we talk about Super Bowl LIV? Finally a game that was titled correctly as this game was super. As I wrote last week I couldn’t find any reason not to pull for either team. I was very confident when I predicted the 49ers would win by 10 in a low scoring game. When San Fran went up 20 - 10 late it looked as if I’d be proven right, for once in my life. I mean Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes wasn’t having a game we’re so used to seeing him have. He’d just thrown his second interception of the game and for a brief second it looked as though the “magic” had stayed in the dressing room. In the back of just about every fan’s memory was the 24 point deficit KC found itself in just a couple weeks earlier in their playoff game against Houston.

Then as we’ve seen happen so many times in the 2019 season with just over six minutes to go in quarter four Kansas City got hot and began hitting on all cylinders. All of a sudden the magic came alive as it had so many times this year. It was then that San Francisco knew they didn’t have a chance in stopping history from being made. For all the positive things Mahomes gets credit for it was time for the Chiefs’ defense to finally make a stand. They stuffed every attempt the 49ers made late in the fourth quarter to finally claim their first World Championship in fifty years. I didn’t pick the winner of SB 54 but at least the under (54) was good so I feel somewhat vindicated.

Although this game kept many of us glued to the tube unlike so many other games that were played before this Super Bowl it made “history” in more ways than one. Like the vast majority of fans I use those very few minutes also known as halftime to make a brief pit stop and refill my favorite adult beverage. At first glance as I sat back down in my favorite chair I thought someone was playing a joke on me and had changed the channel. I grabbed my remote then pushed for the guide to be displayed and I was a bit confused and taken aback since it showed the TV was still set to Fox. As I tried to make sense of the situation I asked myself when did Fox become a porno site?

I like to play a joke on my friends from time to time just as much as the next guy with a few exceptions. Don’t fool with my food, money or family and we’ll laugh all night long. I became confused about the station that was playing porn and I didn’t know just who would’ve changed the TV so I just didn’t know how to react. Yes, I was a little embarrassed but all I wanted to do was get the game back on before the second half kickoff.

To my surprised nobody had changed the channel and we were still tuned into the Super Bowl. The two “performers” were named Jennifer Lopez and somebody named Shakira. They performed on a stage setup on the 50 yard line surrounded by what seemed to be a couple hundred “kids” jumping up and down the entire twenty or more minutes. In my early years I did attend live band concerts. To me there’s nothing better than to share live music being performed by your favorite bands. From the very first Championship games and Super Bowls the halftime shows have become bigger and bigger each year. Many of those early halftimes resembled a Las Vegas or Broadway style production.

But recently these newly styled shows feel as though they’re really done to shock you. The entire crotch grabbing and crotch thrusting toward the fans has finally gotten out of control and absent of taste. That is unless you don’t mind seeing a bunch of people going at it as if dry humping is a new Olympic event. I’m no prude but I don’t need to see people jumping and dry humping each other while I’m waiting to watch another half of football. I wonder if I go into a strip club will a football game break out? Of course not and we shouldn’t be treated to humping and pumping by sex slaves of the NFL!

Till next week…

Jim Spring

The Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the nomination window for the next class of inductees. Nominations for the Class of 2020 will be accepted through March 31.

The annual induction banquet for the Class of 2020 will be held on September 10 at Forrest Grove Plantation in Denham Springs. This will be the tenth year the Denham Springs Athletic Association and the local high school have co-hosted this popular event. Thus far, 73 former Yellow Jacket greats have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In addition to being honored at the banquet, inductees will also be presented to the public at halftime of the DSHS-Ponchatoula football game on September 11 in Yellow Jacket Stadium.

Readers are reminded that the Hall of Fame Selection Committee does not nominate the candidates. This important function is left to the public. Any person with an interest in DSHS sports may submit a nomination; however, individuals may not nominate themselves. All nominations must conform to the Hall of Fame Nomination Guidelines available to the public by visiting the DSHS website at www.denhamspringshs.org or by picking up a copy at the school office.

When preparing a nomination, the most critical requirement is to provide documentation that substantiates claims of athletic, academic, and civic achievement. Such verification typically comes from newspaper articles, copies of yearbook pages, old scrapbooks, family archives, etc.

Nominators are advised to start early in the process of collecting documentation to afford nominees the best chance of selection. Unsubstantiated claims cannot be considered by the Selection Committee. Please refer to the Hall of Fame Nomination Guidelines for recommendations on which area newspapers and libraries to contact.

Nominations cannot be accepted by email or fax. Because guidelines require an

8 X 10 photograph of the candidate, nominations must be mailed or hand-delivered to Denham Springs High School, ATTN: Principal (HOF), 1000 N. Range Avenue, Denham Springs, LA 70726. Submissions must be postmarked or hand-delivered no later than March 31 to be considered for induction this year.

Once all nominations are received and screened for completeness, the Selection Committee will meet to review the submissions and vote on candidates for induction this fall. Nominees who are not selected will remain active candidates and be voted on annually for a period of five years. If additional documentation becomes available that will strengthen their file, it should be submitted to the address noted above.

The Hall of Fame serves as a symbol of appreciation to the Athletes, Coaches, and Supporters whose outstanding contributions meet the criteria for selection in one of these three categories. Male and female athletes will be representative of all varsity sports. Nominees, both living and deceased, will be considered from all eras of DSHS athletics to the extent possible.
