FINE IDEAS
Nick Saban made the wrong decision in going for 2 points as opposed to kicking the extra point, when Alabama had a 21-17 lead in the Tide’s recent 32-31 overtime loss to LSU —the college game of the year so far. The 2-point conversion attempt failed. Some people claim this cost Alabama the game. I’m not one of them.
An almost automatic 5-point lead (with the extra point) is a lot better alternative than a questionable 6-point advantage. If LSU were to score subsequently, they’d have a one-point advantage if Alabama had made the 2-point conversion, and a 2-point lead if Alabama had successfully kicked an extra point. Not much of a difference. Certainly not enough to eschew an almost certain successful extra point for the questionable possibility of a successful 2-point play.
One line of thinking, perhaps from some disgruntled Tide fans, is that had Alabama kicked the extra point, then when Alabama kicked a field goal with 21 seconds remaining, it would have been for a 25-24 lead (and probable win), not to tie the game at 24.
This is foolhardy logic. If Alabama had kicked the extra point as opposed to going for 2, then the whole nature/psychology of the game changes. What would have followed would have been a lot different then what transpired. So, who knows what would have taken place. It certainly would not have followed the script of what did occur.
This is reminiscent of when a player is thrown out stealing in baseball. The batter then hits a home run. Invariably, many announcers say that it would have been a 2-run home run if there was not a stolen base attempt. Again, this is incorrect. For the same reason. The whole strategy of the game changes. The pitcher and batter have a different approach. The catcher very readily calls the game differently. You cannot assume that there would be a 2-run home run in this situation. But, many a fan (and an announcer) does.
Back to the Tigers-Tide game. Saban had earlier made a 2-point attempt when a touchdown had given Alabama a 15-14 lead. This was the correct move, even though the conversion was unsuccessful. It was worth the risk, because a 3-point lead gives you a tie if LSU kicks a subsequent field goal.
Interestingly, LSU coach Brian Kelly made a questionable decision when going for 2 in overtime after the Tigers had pulled to within 31-30. The thinking is that when you are at home, you play for a tie, on the road, you go for the win. This same rationale applies to baseball when you decide whether to bunt a man over in a late-game situation. Or, in basketball, whether or not you set up a play for a 2 point or 3 point shot in the waning moments when trailing by 2.
LSU followed up the Alabama delirium with an ugly 13-10 win at Arkansas. Any win in the SEC is a good win, but this was not an aesthetic delight.
The game’s MVP was true freshman LB Harold Perkins, who had 4 sacks and forced 2 fumbles, including a late-game play that ensured an LSU victory. Perkins reminds me of former Penn State great and Dallas Cowboys revelation Micah Parsons.
What is concerning for LSU was the play of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who seemed to regress to the uneven play he had early in the season. On LSU’s last 2 series, Daniels looked like he was not reading the opposing teams defenses on zone-read plays. It almost looked like Daniels was executing a straight handoff or play fake that was pre-determined (in his mind anyway). This must be rectified, if LSU is to keep on winning football games.
Go Jackets!
